5.0 stars I Love St. thomas and everthing about it! Visited: August 2004

For the people who don't know what it means to live or visit an Island would never enjoy visiting. The island is a laid back not a SLAVERY place! Like most of you people are looking for. Truth be told I don't think no where you winers go would be good enough for you. Why not build your own resort, bring your own towels so we don't have to read your complains.

3.0 stars This was a nice resort, but with a lousy beach. Visited: June 2004

The Elysian Beach Resort was nice. It was clean, the employees were nice, and the pool was very nice.

However, we didn't go into the water on beach. There were too many boats. My son told me he smelled gasoline in the water. We spent time at Magens Bay and Coki Beach.

3.0 stars It was better than we expected! Visited: December 2003

After reading the reviews of the stuffy and whiny people, we were uncertain what we would see when we arrived. We loved our two-bedroom suite.

It wasn't the Ritz-Carlton, but we didn't expect it to be. Room service? A big lobby? Who cares? We were never there long enough to want it.

If you're looking for a roomy place to stay while enjoying the other areas of the islands, this place is grand. If you want pampered luxury, go elsewhere. We got our money's worth and we can't complain about that (though it appears some can).

1.0 stars If you don't expect much you won't be disappointed! Visited: March 2003

We just returned from St Thomas and our one-week stay at the Elysian. What a disappointment! We have stayed in "Vacation Ownership" locations and have never been treated with such indifference and disdain.

We had to beg for bath towels. The air-conditioner was so loud it kept us awake at night. Maintenance was not available after 5:00 in the evening. When I went to the front desk to get help I felt like I was disrupting the television watching the desk clerk was doing.

My 3 year-old skinned her knee and much to my surprise and shock (not!) they didn't even have a band-aid at the front desk.

As I said, if you don't expect a lot you will not be disappointed. We would never buy a week with them. The only saving grace was the beautiful water!

4.0 stars Our time at the Elysian was enjoyable. Visited: January 2003

We had researched quite a bit and viewed the varied reviews with some trepidation. I think it all boiled down to something I call the "Elysian Moment", which we had about an hour after we arrived when we asked ourselves how uptight we wanted to be.

The beach was not as long as we had hoped. There was some trouble with the water supply when we were here, but the staff tried to minimize the effect it had on the guests by shutting off the water during the day.

There were some rocks near shore which made getting into and out of the water a little painful, but many people had brought along surf boots or shoes to minimize this, and I would recommend using them.

The service was not what I was used to, but nothing service-wise on the island was, since the people here were just more laid back. The restaurants on-site were both great with a different ambience. My personal favorite was Bonnie's, which had received many awards for their staff.

There was also a hut on the beach which offered a lot of different water sport opportunities and cruise options. There was a really nice gym, which had nice hours. We ended up having a great time even though we were a little disappointed to start with. Nothing we thought was "wrong" with the resort ended up being enough of a frustration to jeopardize our vacation. We loved our time on St. Thomas and look forward to returning to the Elysian on our next trip down.

If you require perfection, you will be hard pressed to find it on the islands, but the Elysian is probably not the place for you. If you want a nice resort for a reasonable price with all the amenities that you need and you are willing to be laid back, then you will probably enjoy the Elysian as much as we did.

4.0 stars Very nice, with a great view and a beautiful beach. Visited: November 2002

This was a nice property - a good family place.

The pool was wonderful and so was the food at the restaurants. With Bonnie's Beachside Restaurant (the resort's onsite restaurant), the Yacht Club, and the Ritz Carlton (located right next door), you can find food for anyone's fancy.

I was disappointed that there was no room service late at night. The beach also had a few rocks closer to shore, but most of the beachs on St. thomas did. I give this place a big thumbs up.

3.0 stars We had an enjoyable, but improvable experience. Visited: August 2002

My husband and I stayed for one week in August 2002. Overall, it was enjoyable, but many things could be improved.

First, the positives:

The room was clean, medium-sized, with a private water-view balcony, table and two chairs.

The beach and pool were steps apart from each other. The beach was clean (no litter), had reasonably good snorkeling, generally calm water, and was not crowded.

The pool and jacuzzi were clean. The pool had a small waterfall with a little cave, so you could duck out from the sun but stay in the water if you wanted. Landscaping was maintained.

The resort was extremely quiet. You could nap or sleep with no fear of noise at any time.

Negatives:

Snorkeling, kayaking, etc. equipment was Nnot complimentary, even though the information I had before arrival said it was.

The poolside bar was open only one afternoon during the week we were here. That meant we had to buy and haul a cooler, ice and whatever refreshments we would want down to the pool or beach - and back up a somewhat steep hillside and steps.

The restaurant was not open at all while we were here.

Also, the fitness center was small, not well lit, and somewhat antiquated.

The shuttle for Bluebeard's only came a couple times during the week we were here.

Mixed:

Iguanas abounded. Sometimes they were fun to play with, but don't be surprised to see them in the pool, too. They may climb in your lap if you have food and if they are (almost always) hungry.

Would we stay here again? As a couple seeking peace, quiet and privacy, yes. I am contemplating bringing my teens, but probably won't - they would be bored.

5.0 stars Elysian was beautiful, off the beaten track, and a five-star accommodation. Visited: July 2002

I loved the Elysian. I have done extensive traveling throughout the United States, Europe and the Caribbean, and I found the Elysian Resort to be one of most beautiful and unspoiled destinations I've been to.

The beach area was dotted with palm trees and white sand, along with a panoramic view of the mountains in the distance and the St. Thomas Yacht Club. Also, a short ferry ride will take you to the beautiful island of St.John.

If you like glitz and crowds, then the Elysian is not for you, but if you prefer beauty, serenity, and pure relaxation, then the Elysian is the place to go! It is definitely five stars.

1.0 stars Not what expected Visited: March 2002

I payed for a resort, but what I got was a hotel whose phones didn't work, a staff that didn't care and made me beg for bath towels. The beach was OK, especially since I came from Ohio, and I was happy to see any beach, but there were rocks close to shore.

I couldn't get a wakeup call (no phones) and they couldn't provide me with an alarm clock. If you see listings that say that this hotel provides SCUBA and parasailing and other fun and exciting watersports, don't believe it, you have to set that up yourself, hopefully you have a phone to do it. I didn't and had to use my cell phone, and a two year old phonebook, so graciously provided by Elysian. The numbers were all wrong though. The desk is not open 24 hours, it closes at 11 and the bar closes about an hour later, so if you have a problem, or just want something to eat after midnight, forget it.

The cab ride from the airport to the hotel cost $10 dollars per person, each way, so be aware of the extra cost you will incur.

2.0 stars Waaaay overpriced... Visited: March 2001

This is a condominium complex (reportedly time-share's); it is not a hotel. So, do not expect services or amenities normally associated with hotels in this price range. You're pretty much on your own here.

After a late arrival (10:30 pm) from the airport, we went to bed hungry and thirsty when a search of the complex turned up only dark windows and a broken soda machine. We had a mini-coffee pot in the room -- no coffee!

The units are decent, but nothing special. The pool is nice, but the beach was disappointing. Calling this a resort is being very generous.

None of the dozen people in our group were pleased with the Elysian. Overall, I would rate this place satisfactory -- if they charged $100/night less.

5.0 stars We had a wonderful time. Visited: December 2000

My husband and I really enjoyed our visit at the Elysian Beach Resort. What a wonderful place to just kick back and soak up sand and surf. We love snorkeling and there were so many wonderful spots all over St. Thomas that the entire 7 days that we were there, we never dove in the same spot twice.

Each day we saw new sea creatures, from starfish to stingrays. Our favorite experience was when we saw, not one, but two sea turtles. They look slow but try keeping up with one underwater...you can't do it.

Each night we looked forward to dining at the wonderful restaurant located on the property. What a joy to find such great food so close by. Our compliments to the chef and the friendly staff. They really exemplified St. Thomas hospitality.

I honestly think we enjoyed ourselves as much at the Elysian as we ever have on any vacation but then, life is what you make it and we went expecting to have a wonderful, relaxing time--we weren't disappointed.

4.0 stars Good place and with a little work, could have been better! Visited: December 1969

Beware of where your room is located. Buildings V,W,X,Y, and Z are quite a ways away from the amenities. They are also located up on a hill, so this may pose a problem to walk to and from them. Our room was very clean and I recommend the king bed unit which gave the most space. The pool was very nice, but it did seem dirty every day. The food at the restaurants were very good. It would have been nice to have a little more nightly entertainment.

The length of the beach area was short but nice. The beach had some rocks near the shore and the bottom was not completely sandy. A little bit more care from the staff would greatly improve this property! Location is central to town, restaurants and ferry to St. John.
