Be careful if you have electronics. Visited: June 2009 |

While I was staying here, the cleaning lady picked up my laptop by the screen and this cracked my screen. I took the computer to the manager and he refused to pay for it telling me that a power surge caused the damage. It is impossible for a power surge to physically crack a computer screen.
The manager treated me like I was making it up to get a new computer. I ended up having to pay $1,200 to get it fixed.
I would not stay here if I had valuable electronics with me. The cleaning ladies have no clue how to handle expensive electronics. |

Hotel 1829 is a great hotel. Visited: December 2006 |

This place was magnificent. My husband and I had the penthouse, and the view of the harbor was incredible. Our friends had rooms that were also very nice and romantic with the netting over the beds.
We will stay here again the next time we are in St. Thomas. What a nice place to stay at the end of our vacation from a week boat charter. |

I stayed in Hotel 1829 a year ago, and it was beautiful. I was pleased to stay here.
I love everything about the place - the view, and the people who work here. Also, it is really close to the town.
Thanks to the staff for my weekend here. God bless you all. |

Disappointment Visited: June 2002 |

My wife and I just got back from our honeymoon and stayed for one night in Hotel 1829, and we were relieved it was not for longer. The property itself is beautiful, but so much of the hotel did not live up to our expectations. For instance, the famed restaurant has been closed for nearly a year, but this is not mentioned on their website nor in any other literature. The pool was closed off, and this did not appear to be a temporary situation. The bar, advertised in guide books as open from 10am to 12 midnight was actually open only from 5pm until 11pm - and promptly at 11pm we were told it was to be 'lights out' and we should take our drinks to our room. The remote control for our television was broken and could not be replaced.
I sincerely believe that the management has lost interest in this wonderful property; it is such a shame. All the reviewers on this, and other, websites; the major guide books and repeat visitors will surely be in for a shock when they return.
A major disappointment given that with a little effort, I can see how this hotel was a jewel on the island. |

Exceptional service at a historic location. Visited: March 2001 |

This is the 7th year in a row I have spent 10 days in March at this hotel. The owner and his staff are dedicated to making one's stay memorable, safe, and comfortable. Each staff member is as nice as the other; and most of them have been there all seven years I have been—that alone says something. The restaurant is absolutely the best on the island and I've tried many. The location is near town with a very private swimming pool that makes lounging a pleasure. The rooms retain many of the typical furnishings one would expect at a hotel completed in 1829. The cleanliness is top drawer. The owner Michael Ball has given back to the community by restoring and renovating several properties for the historical society as well as landscaping the famous 99 steps of St. Thomas. Finally, as a female traveler, I feel extremely safe and secure at this hotel. The hotel itself is within easy walking distance of the shopping areas as well. I just cannot say enough about how wonderful this respite is each year. |

I would like to live at this hotel. Visited: November 2000 |

The rooms are small, and only one of the two we stayed in had a window. But that's not much of a problem, since you won't want or need to spend much time in the room. There is a very small swimming pool.
Staying at the 1829 was like staying in a grand house. The staff here is very friendly and helpful. The hotel atmosphere was very laid back –getting up in the morning and having coffee and a continental breakfast will be one of my fondest memories of St. Thomas. Since there are only 13 rooms, the hotel is never crowded. It doesn't open to the public until 10am, so we rarely saw more than 3-4 other people around in the morning.
The restaurant is excellent and there are two other restaurants next door. The hotel is only two blocks from downtown and the ferry to St. John. We were able to walk everywhere.
We stayed here when we flew into and out of the USVI, but we would have been happy to stay at the Hotel 1829 the entire time we were on vacation. Our only regret is that we didn't spend the money to upgrade our rooms to the ones that overlook the harbor, which do have windows. |
