A couple buildings were being jack hammered so that they could tear out a section of one side of the wall at a time and work around the entire building to re-pour concrete in. I was told it was to fix cracks caused by 30 years of earthquakes.
That would never fly in the states, and I pray for future occupants when the upper and lower seams of
The newly poured concrete seperates from the original walls. FYI what grade of concrete do you think they have on the islands? I would think definitely not enough (strength/ lbs per square inch) to support many stories above it.
Two of the pools have jack hammered holes in them, and are closed for construction.
WiFi is only at the lobby, and we couldn't pay to get it in the room.
The front desk and management were very rude, and did not seem to be interested in being friendly or happy. Forget asking about WiFi, fixing the cable that went down every other hour, or other stuff because they just seemed to want to check you in and take your money.
The activities girl, Kim, and the people at the bar were amazingly refreshing and a highlight of the resort.

I have just returned from staying at Point Pleasant, and I enjoyed my stay. Everyone was nice, and if I needed something - it was done quickly.
I also had a wonderful private driver. He saved me money from renting a car.

They offered cozy condo units, with an easy walk to the beach and pools. Also, it was close to the ferry to St. John.
There was also great Scuba diving. the restaurants were a bit pricey, but I guess that's what you get in island hot spots.

I thought this place was great. If you don't mind cooking your own meals (food is expensive even at the grocery - but even more so in restaurants), this is the place for you!
It was fully furnished with a full kitchenette - we cooked 90% of our meals. The view was fantastic, and the staff was very friendly.
This was the best vacation I've ever had. In fact - we are planning to go back next month (August 2007)!

We stayed in a junior suite, which had an extra large balcony that gave way to spectacular views. The floors, including the shower floor, were initially very clean, and we felt comfortable walking around barefoot. However, as the days spent at the beach began to multiply, I refused to walk around without shoes (seeing as how cleaning the dirty floors was not a priority to the cleaning staff).
The curtains and bedspread were old and dank, I abhorred touching them. Each day, before I sat on the bed, I would remove the comforter. Other than that, the bed was fine. It was comfortable, with fluffy pillows and clean sheets at least every other day to two days. It was the same rotation on the towels.
I would say each day, the room was straightened up very well, but I do not consider that cleaning.
Neither of the resort restaurants offered breakfast, so the front desk recommended we go next door to the Wyndham. What a disappointment. It was $18.00 per person for a "Continental breakfast" buffet that really was not very tasty.
Overall, we did not find any restaurant on the island that did breakfast very well. In the end, the best we found was the "Havensight Cafe" in the Havensight Mall. The two older women that ran the place were sweeter than sugar, and nothing was priced over $6.00 or $7.00.
As far as the Point Pleasant staff was concerned, some seemed to work harder than others. We would make a request to a young front desk attendant, and 24hrs later nothing was done. They just seemed lazy and unconcerned. If we asked someone at the front desk who seemed to have more experience, and the problem was solved literally within two minutes.
We did not use the pool or visit the property beaches. We did see that one of the beaches sat in front of an abandoned hotel. From a distance, it did not look maintained; and the second beach was shared with the Wyndam, but we had already lost all desire to associate ourselves with that hotel. Also, we weren't able to take care of the free snorkel gear since the property restaurant that issued it opens at 11:00, and we were gone by 9:00 every morning.
No matter where you stay, rent a car, (Jeeps are extra fun!). Eat at as many "local" spots as you can - it will save you money, and the food will generally taste better.
If you don't intend to spend too much time in your room, Point Pleasant may be perfect for you. If you just want to chill in your room and enjoy the property grounds, seek accommodations elsewhere.

Point Pleasant was a great place to stay and relax. The unit we stayed in was a D-unit - on top of the hill. I believe they were the best views and most Caribbean breezes one could get.
Our room was very clean and stocked with toiletries and kitchen supplies (cookware). The beds and furniture were in excellent condition.
This place may not be for everyone, especially those who want to be catered to every minute. You need to got to a five-star hotel for that. But if you are here to relax and enjoy, this is the place.
The attendants were friendly and informative. Agave Terrace restaurant was five-star - as advertised. The food at Fungi's on the water was less spectacular, but the view and relaxation factor made up for it. I recommend stopping by a grocery store to pick up food and drink items, and enjoy the morning on your deck.
The east end of the island was the place to be. It was out of the way of Charlotte Amalie, which gets "touristy" during the day when the cruisers dock. You can walk to nearby Coki Point, which offers many activities such as snorkeling, parasailing, and jet skiing.
Pineapple Beach was adjacent to Point Pleasant, and was on the property of a closed resort. The upside was that it was empty, the downside was that it was empty. Take your towel, a small cooler, and a book and enjoy. If you're outside near sunset or after dark, take bug spray. "No see-ums" were everywhere on the island. It was not just a Point Pleasant problem. If you visit any island, be prepared.
There was plenty to do in the vicinity of Point Pleasant, but St. Thomas is small enough that you can easily explore the north shore (Magen's Bay), Red Hook, or Charlotte Amalie at will. I recommend renting a car, but taxi access is abundant. While you're in St Thomas, take a day trip to St John. Ferries leave regularly from Red Hook.
I would definitely stay at Point Pleasant again. We will be going back at the end of June. St. Thomas is easily explored (and safe), unlike Jamaica or some other islands. There is no need to stay in an all-inclusive where you tend to hibernate on your resort.

We stayed here last March. The room (Jr. Suite) we had was wonderful, very clean, bright, with no bugs (something I found not to be the case everywhere else we went). We also had amazing views. We loved it in our room.
However, the rest of the place left a bit to be desrired. I got eaten alive (the bugs ate more than I did) at Fungis, and a spray can of OFF was $7! That is something I think should have been complimentary if you have no-see-ums present.
The "activities" person was so lackadaisical. We had to confirm and reconfirm our plans after we booked them to find out the time, place, etc. of my massage, my husband's SCUBA dive, etc. Even then, sometimes we just hung around hoping our plans would materialize.
Still, having said all this, and having been to St. Thomas three times, this was the most gorgeous view we'd ever had. We took full advantage of our balcony and our refrigerator (to chill our wine and appetizers).
Bottom line: stay here - but don't rely on the resort to make your stay happy.

We stayed here for four nights for nearly $300/night. We were not expecting a fancy place, just some place clean and comfortable. Boy, were we disappointed! This was, by far, the worst place we've ever stayed at anywhere.
The place was very dirty. We had a dirty bathroom, a broken sofa, broken stove, a rusted ceiling fan, and dirty utensils - to list a few. One night, someone vomited outside our entrance and it took six hours, two phone calls and a visit to the front desk for someone to come out and clean it.
We thought the staff was very rude, and the customer service was pretty much non-existent!

Point Pleasant ruined our wedding.Visited: October 2005
Posted by kcurran
We found this resort to have signficant problems—poor quality of rooms, poor maintenance of the resort, and horrible guest service!
We had a destination wedding with 66 guests at Agave Terrace Restaurant on Point Pleasant Resort on October 8, 2005 (which was an amazing restaurant and did a tremendous job).
Out of convenience, nearly all of our guests stayed at Point Pleasant--approximately 30 rooms in total. We cannot express how dissatisfied, angry and hurt we are that Point Pleasant detracted from our wedding!
The resort's staff, particularly its management, was so rude to us that we felt like every problem or question we had was an imposition. It seemed like we had to beg for service! Plus, nobody was at the desk after 8:00 pm.
The resort was so hilly that guests need a shuttle to get around. The problem was that the shuttle seemed to take forever to pick us up, and it stopped running at 8:00 pm, which made getting around the resort at night nearly impossible.
Also, the resort was poorly lit and was poorly maintained with dangerous walking paths. We found getting to our room in the dark to be treacherous.
Point Pleasant advertised that it had two beaches. We thought that was an outright lie. They had one patch of sand that was nearly impossible to find by following signs. The other "beach" really belonged to an abandoned resort, so it was not maintained, and the path to it from Point Pleasant was virtually non-existent.
Many of the rooms were so moldy that some of our guests had severe allergy problems. A two-bedroom villa had cockroaches. And another room had bug problems. The hotel management didn't seem to care; in fact, they acted very upset with us for bringing up the problems.
It took our friend almost an hour to find one of the rooms. The reason was that a sign was pointed the wrong way. We told the assistant manager on duty and she just shrugged her shoulders.
The resort also had a severe mosquito problem. All of our guests were eaten up. The resort also had a severe problem with feral cats and rats.
In addition, the resort contracted with only one cab company. That company charged 20-30% more than other cabs for similar routes. We found the drivers to be very rude, and the cabs were poorly maintained.
We would never recommend that anyone stay here.

My husband and I spent four days at Point Pleasant. It was great.
However, you need to be in somewhat good shape to stay here. It was layered within the mountain, so to get down to the beach, bar or shop, you must walk down and then back up. We loved it, though!
There were lush tropical plants everywhere with well cleaned pathways leading throughout the property. Two restaurants were on-site with a small beach, but you are free to walk to the beach next door as well.
The view from our room was phenomenal! Take the bus into town and get a taste of the locals - that was an awesome experience! Shopping downtown was fun, too, and there were lots of good deals to be found.
We really enjoyed our stay and will definitely stay here again when we return.

We encountered a hotel staff that was rude and non-responsive! We will NEVER stay there again! A few of our problems included:
• No free rental car for guests to use (as advertised).
• The upper pool was closed for renovation.
• The casual restaurant was closed on Sunday and Monday due to electrical problems.
• Our TV stopped working multiple times throughout our stay.
• The pullout sofa was the most uncomfortable we’ve ever slept on.
• The hotel would not give us a free rollaway bed for our kids.
• We found dead worms in our sink and bathroom floor and a dead lizard under our front door.
• The hotel would not allow us to have late checkout.
• Every guest we spoke to also complained about the lack of amenities and poor service.

First of all, the only reason I'm not giving Point Pleasant five stars is just because it was a little more rustic than a five star hotel. Otherwise, this was a great place to stay!
We picked Point Pleasant because of price and a recommendation. I was nervous that it would be gross after reading the reviews on this website. We got there, checked in with a nice woman and were taken to our room.
We had the best location (E7). We were close to Agave Terrace and one of the pools, and we had the sliding doors on two walls and a beautiful view of Coki Point.
The rooms were satisfactorily clean. My husband thought they could be a bit cleaner, but I thought they were okay. We did get new towels every day. The paths to get places were scary at first -steep, lots of lizards, lots of coverage where large iguanas could be lurking, but I got used to them quick.
We used the Renaissance Grand Resort next door quite a bit. We'd head there to go to the beach and use their pool and ate at their restaurants. They also had jet skis and all the complimentary equipment for Point Pleasant guests - such as snorkels and kayaks.
We ate at both the Agave Terrace and Fungi's and both meals were delicious. We also did a day sail on the Morningstar that we booked through a little stand in Fungi's.
In all, we had a tremendously fabulous stay and are glad we paid about a third of the cost of the Renaissance guests since we had a great room and still had access to the resort area.

The overall feel of Point Pleasant is that of a resort barely keeping up appearances. That said, though, if you don't require pristine rooms and grounds or fawning service, it's well worth the money.
The view was top notch (and I'd definitely recommend getting a room with a view). The grounds were natural, which was nice, and our room was clean and fairly nicely equipped. A couple of the venetian-style windows above the big sliding glass doors didn't work, and one lamp was missing a bulb (which still wasn't replaced four days later), but everything else looked and worked fine.
The room layout was nice -- fairly open, so you could enjoy the view even from bed in the back of the room. Having a kitchen can save you lots of money; we generally ate breakfast and lunch in our room and went out for dinner.
We didn't try Agave, since its more recent reviews were not promising. We went to Fungi's twice, where the food was decent and the staff was friendly.
In addition to the two larger beaches flanking Point Pleasant (both within easy walking distance), there was also a tiny, more private one with beach chairs right at the bottom of the nature trail.
The staff ranged from genuinely friendly to at least putting on an adequate show of helpfulness (although requests to fix things seemed to be uniformly greeted with an "I'll look into it," which meant: "Don't bet on it.").
Our room was cleaned at least every other day, and we could get fresh beach towels at the front desk each AM.
The exercise room was depressing enough (broken glass, rusty freeweights, only half of the cardio machines worked) to put off all but the most determined exercisers. The trails to and from the beaches were steep and rocky in places, but shouldn't be a problem for anyone who's not lazy, ancient, severely out of shape, or disabled.
All in all, though, if what you want is just a relaxing but affordable vacation in a beautiful spot without being waited on hand and foot, you'll get it here.

We chose the Point Pleaseant because the apartments came with kitchens and we could cook our own food. The view from our deck was fantastic and they only good thing about the place. The staff was rude, the floors filthy and the counters in the kitchen very sticky. The range was old and the burners were crooked and didn't work right. We asked them to clean the floor better and afterwards the closets and bathroom floors were still horrible. The floors are tile and should be easy to mop but I don't think they do that (just sweep). The deck was dangerous and I wouldn't let my kids near the railings because the wood was cracked and wobbly. Long fall down the cliff to the ocean! The decks around the pools were also splintering and uneven. Our housekeeper skipped us two out of the six nights. We had no electric the last night. Need I say more? A lot of money to spend for a great view.

Thru wall AC loud, pools small and not always available, no emergency power, not a family place. Lots of deferred maintenance.

I have read numerous reports of Point Pleasant and didn't really know what to expect. Thankfully, we disregarded the negative ones, because we found this to be a great place to stay. It was obviously not a Ritz-Carlton, but who needs that.
The views from any balcony were second to none. The decor of the place was pretty decent. The kitchen was fully stocked and the bed was pretty comfortable. Did I mention the view? I have stayed in many hotels and I have found that the view from inside your room to the water makes it a much better experience. We stayed in the B section, upper level so we had an L-shaped balcony.
I found walking down to the beach or to Fungi's was not a big deal at all. If you are that lazy, you should stay at the Ritz.
The only negative about the place was the water pressure would completely go down to a trickle sometimes (I don't know if it was just our suite). The staff at Point Pleasant was very nice if you were very nice to them right off the bat. That went for anybody on St. Thomas.
For the price, you can't beat it. And even for a higher price, you can't beat the view.

We selected Point Pleasant after spending a lot of time online checking out the various hotels. Our criteria was to find an affordable hotel where we had the choice of fixing our own food and one that wasn't a high-end luxury resort. We brought our 14-month-old with us, so we wanted the flexibility of eating whenever we wanted.
The bottom line is that Point Pleasant delivers what you expect. Don't expect the Ritz, and you will be happy. It is of medium to high quality, with clean rooms, an "okay" decor, and easy enough access to the beach over at Renaissance - and that's it.
We didn't go to the restaurant, although it was recommended to us by several people. We also rented a car to get around the island quickly and a bit more cheaply - that worked out fine for us.
For the three nights we stayed, we had a good bed, a nice clean room (although the decor is something my grandparents would have picked), clean kitchen, plenty of hot water and a very standard (and loud) air conditioning that did what it was supposed to do - cool the room.
We would go back even if it is just for the convenience of being on the northeast side of the island and easy enough access to the ferries to the other islands.
I initially looked at the Marriott, but at $250+/night excluding food, Point Pleasant's $150+/night and the choice to cook yourself made the difference.
If you don't need to be pampered and don't expect to stay in your room all day, stay here and spend your money on other things.

A very natural setting with basic accommodations and great views.Visited: March 2003

We spent five days at Point Pleasant. We are nature lovers and appreciated the natural landscaping. The beach was small and private.
We stayed in a junior suite, and it provided us all the basics; full kitchen, nice living room, great balcony with spectacular views and ultimate privacy.
We prefered to go to the Market Marina, stock up on groceries and cook for ourselves. The restaurants in St. Thomas were ridiculously overpriced! We tried Fungi's, it was "okay". It was basic bar food, the music was too loud, the burgers were small, roti stuffing was lukewarm and of questionable sanitation.
The pools were nice. This hotel would be great for those who want a "base camp" from which they can swim, snorkel, and get to St. John easily.
We were a bit disturbed by the small, red, biting ants in our bed, but accepted this as just part of island living.

This was our second stay. We heard about the change in management and were a little worried, but we were well pleased with our stay. It was a hike down from some places, but the exercise was good. Coki Beach, a walk away, was great for snorkeling. The Renaissance Beach, closer in, was nice for sunbathing. They had three pools, all adequate with great views overlooking ocean.
The staff was Caribbean in service--less responsive than in the U.S., but still nice and helpful if you ask. Willie was still there and he is a great guy.
The room was clean and a little worn, but fully functional.
They had some good deals--such as entertainment book participation, and they also had discounts for those who were repeat stayers.
I would recommend it.

Not our idea of resort living!Visited: February 2003
Posted by born2code
The place was rundown and the staff was rude and unhelpful. My 12 year old took one look at our room and turned to me and said, "We aren't staying here are we?” It was a horrible place for anyone with children to stay. They charged us a two-day penalty ($610) for not staying there.
In order to get to the beach from the room they gave us in Building A we had to hike a 1/2 mile down a very steep hill on a narrow road traveled by cars with blind curves, (I would not feel comfortable allowing my 12 year old to walk it alone.) or hike rocky uneven, unlighted and unmarked paths through other condos. (I also would not feel safe allowing my 12 year old to walk it alone.) Then walk through a beach grill restaurant and another 200 yards to the beach at the nearby Renaissance Hotel.
They informed us that we didn’t need to walk to the beach, we could take the shuttle. What a joke! The shuttle is a guy with major attitude called Lenny. We waited 40 minutes for him to come to take our bags to our room when we first checked in. When he finally arrived, he informed us we can walk to our room–picked up the 2 lightest bags of the 5 we had–we had to carry the rest - and walked us to our room. The fact that we had to wait 40 minutes to walk our own bags to our room is an indication of the service (lack of) the hotel was offering. Waiting for Lenny to take us down and up from the beach or pool was not our idea of resort living.
The building our room was in was in need of maintenance. The steps going up to the front door of the room were hazardous and in need of repair. I stubbed my foot on the cement steps when I tripped on the long weeds growing through the cracks. The grounds were not well kept. Our view was beautiful as long as you ignored the first 50 yards of it. The room itself had not been updated, probably since it was built. The worst part was the bathroom. The shower was disgusting. I have seen nicer showers at campsites. It was small, dark and full of mold.
