3.0 stars Talk about costumer service - Joyce is the best! Visited: October 2009
Posted by s_clarke22
I came to speak at a seminar in St. Thomas and the sponsors had me staying at the Windward Passage Hotel. I would say that the service was okay. When I came to check in, there was only one front desk agent there and the line was out the door. I was very frustrated for waiting so long to check in.

One night around 11pm, I ran out of medicine for my sinus congestion. I really was congested and couldn't sleep without it. I dialed zero and luckily Joyce answered. I asked her if there was a store open so I could buy my medicine. Joyce said she would call around to the different convenience stores to see if they sold the medicine and she would call me right back.

When Joyce called back, she said there was one place open that sold it and she told me the price. I asked her if she could call a taxi for me so I could buy the medicine. She called back and said the taxi stand wasn't answering. I really needed this sinus medication. Joyce offered to take me to the convenience store when she got off from work. I was so appreciative she did that. She didn't have to help me out, but Joyce went above and beyond duty.

4.0 stars Windward Passage hotel is great for weekend stays! Visited: September 2009

Joyce Joshua (the telephone operator) was incredibly helpful. Her bubbly enthusiasm was wonderful, and she was able to handle an issue we had with our original room and get us into the room we reserved. She is a real asset to the property. Please keep her. She's the best! Also, Samantra (telephone operator) was nice, too. She helped us with dinner reservations.

The entire staff - whether working in an office, the restaurant or on the grounds - always greeted us during the week with a friendly hello. We are making plans for our next visit to the Holiday Inn during the Christmas week.

The down side - the toilet did not flush right. I called maintenance, and they said it was fixed. However, it still did not flush. The drains were slow. We were told by front desk staff that we would not have to change rooms (we stayed an extra night).

4.0 stars I would stay at the Windward Passage again. Visited: August 2009
Posted by kimgold09
I recently stayed at the Windward Passage Hotel in St. Thomas and the service was excellent. Before I arrived I wanted to find out about things to do on the island. When I called the hotel, I spoke to Joyce (the telephone operator). Joyce was very knowledgeable about the island and fantastic! Joyce practically sold the island to me. She told me about the weather, places to dine (must try Mims and Virgilos), shop and party (Crown Bay Marina, Fat Turtle). She even setup a private limo service "Charles" to pick my husband and me up from the airport. Charles' limo was very comfortable and private.

When we arrived at the hotel, there was a bellman who greeted us at the gate. I can't remember his name, but he took us to Magens Bay on their complimentary shuttle.

We had the perfect room with a full ocean view (which was very important to us). Every morning my husband would make us a mug of coffee, and we would go onto the balcony to watch the sunrise and the cruise ship come into port.

The beds were very comfortable. They also had plasma TVs. The hotel provided a free continental breakfast, so that was a plus for our budget.

Since the Windward Passage is located in the downtown area, there was no need for us to rent a car. Joyce suggested that we take a safari (open air taxi) which charge like a buck to get around the island. The locals on the safari were also nice. We asked them which restaurant locals eat at. Someone recommended Cuzzins and Gladys' Cafe. We ate a Gladys' for lunch, and the food was great. I had a chicken Caesar salad, and my husband had Calaloo. It was like a spinach soup with fish, okra and veggies.

In my opinion, the Windward Passage hotel is for frequent visitors who don't want to spend too much money on a hotel room. My only complaint is that they need to have activities on the hotel premises (besides their game room) such as live music or a pool/ dominoes tournament.

I would stay at the Windward Passage hotel again.

5.0 stars Speedy check-in at this Hotel!!! Visited: March 2009

I was on trip advisor checking rates of hotels on St. Thomas. I saw that the Windward Passage had some good deals. Of course I read all the reviews about the hotel and most of the reviews were positive. I also have to agree with the other viewer's comments about customer service at the Windward Passage. Outstanding service at the Windward Passage Hotel!! Dinner was great. We had a server Innocintha that was remarkable. She went above and beyond the call of duty. Also the ladies at check in were great. I've stayed at other hotels where I had to wait for my room but not at the Windward Passage. I had a speedy check in. The telephone operators Joyce and Samantra were very helpful. They gave us recommendations about things to do on St. Thomas as well as dinner reservations. My only negative is that I wanted to get a massage and the spa wasn't open. Called a couple of times and didn't get an answer.

This hotel was on a busy street. Roosters crowed all night in the back - and I do mean all night!

Also, there was no access to the beach. We had to pay for shuttle to the beach, and the shuttle took an hour. There was only one shuttle a day, and you must return when the others want to return. In addition, you have to pay fee to enter beach.

It was downtown - which is good -if you want to spend your whole day duty free shopping (boring).

3.0 stars We had a rocky start here. Visited: June 2006

I was rather disappointed when we arrived and we were given key cards to.. not one.. not two.. but three rooms that had not yet been cleaned. The staff seemed so nonchalant and had a "no worries" attitude about it.

After waiting for about an hour, we finally got a clean room and free breakfast for the entire stay. The room was average, but the view was fabulous. After an eventful afternoon, the rest of my stay was nice.

3.0 stars We found this to be an average hotel. Visited: March 2006

We stayed just for one night, having traveled from the BVIs. The people who worked here were friendly enough, but we booked one of the junior suites and were a little disappointed.

I would class it more as a slightly larger than average double room. The balcony was fairly non existent, the bathroom was a bit grubby (though the shower was good), and there were strange noises coming from somewhere above us that we couldn't put our finger on.

In addition, the in-house movie we wanted didn't work, and housekeeping failed to turn up with additional coffee, creamer, etc. when we phoned down to request it.

Also, we ate both dinner and breakfast at the hotel, and both were average standard.

The hotel itself had an excellent location right by the downtown shops and ferry terminal, and the views were great.

We would probably stay here again because of its location, though we wouldn't waste money on going for the suite - it was just not worth it.

4.0 stars A lovely hotel to stay in for business or pleasure. Visited: June 2003

This Holiday Inn has it all. It has a great location, tastefully appointed rooms, lovely courtyard with bar and restaurant, a pool, on-site shops, etc.

The price is right, also. You can ask for the corporate rate and get a room for right around $90 or $100 a night. It's also good for vacationers (singles, couples, families) or business travelers. I saw both here. It is especially safe for women traveling alone as security is excellent. It is very safe and a good bargain.

This hotel was good for a one-night stay. The rooms were clean - about the same as the Marriot Frenchman's Reef.

The air conditioner was really noisy, though. The location was also bad, unless you just want to shop. It was near Charolette Amalie and in a bad section of town. We got a really good rate, but we wouldn't pay big bucks for this hotel.

We were satisfied with our stay, but if you want to beach it or luxury go somewhere else.

This was a great place for two women to stay. We had a terrific view from our room. It is so close to shopping and there was a great Italian restaurant nearby.

We were afraid to wander at night, but we enjoyed looking at the houses on the hill all lit up night. It looked like Christmas. We even enjoyed the barbeque food being sold across the street in the evening.

Our rooms were comfortable and the price didn't break us.

I hope to go again in the very near future.

2.0 stars Not Worth The Money Visited: June 2002

Overall property not in good condition, in particular the bathroom. Stained carpeting and bleach smell in room. The Front desk appeared unorganized. This is more of a $30 per night motel, certainly not worth $125.

3.0 stars Great location, OK hotel Visited: April 2001

The location of this hotel is hard to beat. Shopping areas are easily within walking distance and the airport is a short cab ride away. However, the room was another story.

My wife and I had just come from a nicer property in St John and were initially "underwhelmed" with the Holiday Inn. We had an Oceanview Room and the view was great, but the balcony was non-existent, the carpet was stained, the beds were shot and the air-conditioner was very loud. The room had an overall feel of a motel. That said, I would probably stay here again because of the location and the staff.

The staff was wonderful. We checked in early and had to store our bags and we checked out 5 hours before our flight and stored our bags again upon checking out; there were no problems either time. The front desk people were more than willing to help with any issue and the shuttle to the beach was a breeze. I would recommend this hotel to everyone but just keep your room expectations low-the hotel lost a star for aesthetics.

3.0 stars Excellent bargain in a prime location. Visited: March 2001
Posted by emeyer
I just returned from a five-day, four-night trip to St. Thomas with my girlfriend. Since we
were both on a somewhat limited budget, we opted to stay at the Holiday Inn Windward
Passage Hotel in the Downtown Charlotte Amalie section of St. Thomas.

Let me start off by telling you what it's not. At one time or another, most people have
stayed at a Holiday Inn before. So you can imagine that staying at the Holiday Inn in the
USVI is not like staying at a luxury hotel. Also, it is not a beach resort. That's right, no
beach (though the hotel does offer a free daily shuttle to Maegan’s Bay).

Having prefaced this review by telling you what this hotel doesn’t have, why have I given
it 3 stars? Well, even for a Holiday Inn, the hotel itself is pretty nice. I believe it recently
received a multi-million dollar facelift, and I'd say they did a good job. The lobby is
inviting and cozy. The rooms are fairly spacious, air conditioned and well equipped with a
refrigerator, coffee machine and a lazy boy. The grounds are clean and well maintained.
The freshwater pool provides a nice late afternoon spot to cool off after a day at the
beach. I never had lunch or dinner at the hotel, but the breakfast is pretty darn good. I'd
give the outdoor bar a thumbs up as well.

And then there's the hotel staff. They get 5 stars. They made our stay at the hotel an
absolute pleasure. From the front desk personnel and the bar/restaurant staff to the
cleaning help, everyone is pleasant and always willing to be of assistance. Nothing was
ever a problem.

Aside from the hotel staff, it's location, location, location! So the hotel doesn't have a
beach, but there was so much to see and do in St. Thomas and we only had five days of
vacation. We visited places like Maegan’s Bay, Trunk Bay (St. John's), Coki Beach, etc. If
I would have stayed at a hotel with a beach, I probably would have never used it anyway.
So when you figure that at the Windward Passage, you are two blocks from the shopping
district, three blocks from the St. John's Ferry, and a free shuttle ride away from Maegan's
Bay, not to mention a short 5-10 minute ride from the airport, which allows you to
squeeze out some precious extra hours at the end of your vacation, you're in pretty good
shape!

To sum it all up, if you are on a tight budget or have a limited time’frame in St. Thomas, I
have to say that the Holiday Inn is the way to go.

2.0 stars Great location, but the rooms are in need of help. Visited: March 2000
Posted by Jabrular
Our third stay at the Windward will be our last.

We had a group of four couples stay here, two separate nights on one trip. On both visits, three of four rooms had maintenance issues: loose toilet seats, shower curtain rods falling out and air-conditioning problems.

In addition to these complaints, the staff at the desk were surly at best. Their attitude was very uncharacteristic of the gracious attitude in St. Thomas. We will never stay here again.

4.0 stars Windward offers a wonderful getaway from the daily grind. Visited: December 1969
Posted by dfarrell
I have stayed at Windward Passage for the last 15 yrs. St. Thomas is my saving grace from the daily grind and Windward has always come through for us. I usually take a group once a year and everything from the friendliness and competence of the employees to the comfort of the rooms have always made our stay enjoyable. It's a wonderful location..close to all shopping, restaurants and nightlife. Also, I love looking out the window in the morning to watch the cruise ships sail into the beautiful harbor. I look forward to many more years of staying at your wonderful hotel.
