BEWARE OF BED BUGS! DIRTY COTTAGES Visited: February 2010 |
| Posted by arleenca28 |

Beware of Bed Bugs! When we arrived home from a 7 night stay at Chenay Bay Resort, my husband and I started itching with welts all over the back of our arms, legs and back. I previously read on Trip Advisor that a couple stayed at La Chenay and also received bed bug bites. If you read some reviews on Trip Advisor, other people have made comments about their stay at Chenay Bay. The comments warn travelers to bring bug spray as you will get eaten alive. But they are mistaken, there were no mosquitoes to be seen. The evening before we left, there was a lady at the pool with about 50 bites on her ankle. She thought they were mosquito bites. They are not mosquito bites, they are BED BUG BITES! Added to the horror of bed bugs, the mattress is hard, the 3 standards pillows are old and flat and the sheets are the texture of cheese cloth. I would not let my dog sleep on those pillows. The pillows should be thrown out, the mattress fumigated or encased in plastic. Pray you don't get cottage #14 as it definitely has several problems.
We stayed the same week as the dissatisfied travelers from NJ. We also experienced a dirty cottage and we DID have to purchase cleaning supplies. I purchased bleach and dishwashing liquid, (which are not cheap in St. Croix) as the shower floor was moldy and slimly. After pouring 2/3 of a bottle of bleach and dishwashing liquid on the shower floor and let it set for 5 hours, the shower was still a bit funky, although we could now shower with relief that we would not come back home with toenail fungus.
The toilet constantly ran and had hard water deposit stains in the bowl, the bathroom sink and faucet was full of spittle stains and water spots from the previous occupant. The shower curtain was nasty and covered in mold on the bottom. Little things like a missing toilet rod made the bathroom a huge disappointment.
In the kitchen, the dishes were put away with grime, so I had to wash all the glassware and bowl. Yes, I said bowl, singular. The kitchen was supplied with only one cereal bowl, and only 2 coffee cups, 1 dirty mug, a few plates., two sauce pans that I used to boil water because the water line was broken during our stay. When it was turned back on the water was cloudy, hence it had to be boiled to make coffee. I wanted to call the front desk to find out when the water would be turned back on, but of course there was no phone service in the room as advertised. The phone never worked in our room and we had to use our cell phone and rack up roaming charges, or walk to the front desk and use their phone to make reservations, etc.
About the front desk... There is woman who runs the front office who never introduced herself, and we did not ask her name. She never smiled and had a bad attitude when asked for extra towels, etc. It's like everything is too much trouble. "Now", is not in their vocabulary. This woman tolerates guests, she does not welcome them. There was only one server at breakfast named, "Evelyn". She was always pleasant and we did receive good service. She is a shinning star among lazy dregs.
We were told by some time share owners that the property has experienced up grades like beds in the pool area, but I would not lay on them because they will probably be infested with bed bugs as I mention earlier. The owners of Chenay Bay need a serious awake up call and should stop allowing money to be spent on outdoor TV's and give some effort to basic maintenance in the cottages. Even the lounge chairs at the pool and on the beach are covered in mold. All they need to do is spray them with bleach to get them clean, but again that would take too much effort. We give this resort an A for location/view, but a D in maintenance and cleanliness making Chaney Bay a poor choice for our 10th wedding anniversary. Buyer Beware!!

It took me almost two weeks to find and decide on this lovely cottage resort with all the amenities my wife could ask for. There was a full kitchen, living room and bedroom all in one studio cottage! It was like being at home.
There was no one banging on walls, and no one above walking around. There was just no noise! 'No nothin!' We had this place all to ourselves - and with a quaint little porch overlooking the beautiful bay. Chenay Bay is Paradise times ten!
Bring Skin So Soft Bug Lotion for the gnats. We only used it twice, but it was good to have. I noticed some reviewers claimed the gnats were bed bugs, but they were not.
There are no bed bugs in the Caribbean. They are called "Asian Tiger Mosquitos." You can't see the gnats or feel them until after they bite and are gone (No See Ems). This small gnat-like bug, really a small mosquito, is present throughout all the Caribbean islands, so avoid the bug spray and bring the lotion and you'll be fine. |

What a great place to vacation! Visited: September 2009 |

We were celebrating our 46th wedding anniversary, and wanted a nice, laid-back place to relax, but also have water activities. This was it!
Victor, the property manager, was visible daily and wanted to know of any problems and/or suggestions for improvement to our stay. He was very amiable and had lots innovative ideas to upgrade the property.
We stayed in cottage #49 and it had the best view. It overlooked the ocean, and outlying island, and the side of the pool/hot tub. Our cottage needed some up-dating, but we assumed it would happen eventually as Victor continues to improve the property. He has done an outstanding job since his "takeover".
We had no problems. The front desk staff, namely Ms. Chenay, was always very helpful answering any of our questions.
We recommend Chenay Bay Beach Resort for a calm, relaxing vacation treat. Rent a car since it is about three miles from Christiansted and grocery stores.
The resort restaurant, Shores, was very good, but you do tire of the menu. Cheeseburgers in Paradise is a two-minute drive, and it was fun (especially Tuesday for Crab Races). It was great. They served huge burgers and the best onion rings.
We took our GPS, but had trouble acquiring satellite signals. It worked twice that week. |

For many years we have vacation in St. Croix with our family. Now that our children have grown up and have went to college we no longer rent a home on the Island. So for an easy and inexpensive way
We decided to stay at Cheney Bay, because we enjoy the place so much.
From March 13th to March 18th we vacation at your place Unit #37.
Our room was quaint and clean, with an OK view of the Ocean. But the problem seem to be at night,
At first I thought it was (no-seemes) those pesty little bugs biting us. But when I got home and noticed Bed Bugs I freaked!
I check the Internet to see what the symptoms where and low and behold Bed Bug Bites. I was reluctant write but I felt I had too. I enjoy the trip very much and I want to see if any one has the same complaint as I do.
When home, I had to fumigate my bedroom and luggage because of those little pests.
I hope you can correct the problem, because I would love to come back next year.
Our Concern
Sam & Laurie
Very nice to hear comments from our resort guests particularly those who have seen the positive changes over the last 18 months. We always appreciate guests taking time to highlight their resort experience. Our number one goal is to deliver a quality resort experience including guest safety. Upon reading your comments, the resort manager was immediately contacted. That unit was taken out of service for a detailed health and safety inspection. When inspected, no evidence of bed bugs was found. Our repeat inspection protocol will be followed to ensure that no trace might have been missed.
The safety and well-being of our resort guests is always top of mind for all our staff. When you plan your return visit, you can be assured only a friendly resort staff will greet you…no bed bugs.

The negatives: Ocean swimming was so-so because there was lots of growth underfoot. I would suggest you use a good bug spray all day long on the beach. Also, the beds need improving.
The positives: Warm friendly atmosphere, clean rooms, pretty bay, long walks. Friendly bar and nice dinners, good variety of live evening music. I loved the lay of the resort - individual cottages. It was very pretty
Traveling the island was wonderful. Rent a car from Olympic (to be picked up at the airport - same rate as a taxi to the resort). In this way, you can visit the grocery store ($24 return by taxi) once you've checked in and return the car in town ($12 to town)
the next day. All this was for the price of a rental of $47. |

Chenay Bay was so peaceful. Visited: June 2006 |

My husband and I stayed at Chenay Bay in early June, and we were so glad we did. We were looking for a peaceful and relaxing vacation, and we got it.
Chenay Bay offered cottages instead of rooms, and I think we had one of the best. We stayed in cottage # 5 which overlooked the pool and the water, with a great view of Green Cay. We had what I would call a studio with a kitchenette. The room was very nice, and the kitchen was stocked with all the essentials. We did a lot of cooking, as the restaurant prices on the island were quite high.
The housekeeping staff was great. They were always on top of cleaning and requests.
Chenay Bay also offered watersports equipment. We had brought our own snorkeling gear, but they did have that to lend out, and also Sunfishes and kayaks. The snorkeling was as good as anywhere else on the island, and it was very easy swimming for those who may not too sure of themselves.
The front desk help was great. If we needed any questions answered or rentals, they were more than eager to please. Patrick, the bartender, made an exceptional "Patricks Passion" rum drink! Everyone at the resort was great.
If you want the glitz and noise of the high rise resort, this is not the place for you. However, if you want a quiet and relaxing vacation, go to Chenay Bay. |

My husband and I just returned from a one-week stay at Chenay Bay. What a peaceful place! It was just what we were looking for.
If you want the highrise glitz and noise, this is not the place for you. This is for serious rest and relaxation. The owners and staff are all very helpful and nice. Patrick (at the bar) makes an awesome cocktail, and Victor (with watersports) is a trip. They offer snorkeling, sailfish and kayaks. There is great snorkling off the point, and we kayaked out to Green Cay to snorkel some more.
All in all, Chenay Bay was one of the best places we have stayed. |

We just returned from Chenay Bay this morning. This was an extremely great place to go to relax. If you have never gone to St. Croix, you have no idea what you are missing.
The resort was just what we wanted - not a lot of flash, but just a great place to relax and unwind. We enjoyed our stay at Chenay Bay and got everything we expected from the resort. We also plan returning just as soon as possible.
Thank you, staff at Chenay Bay. You made our vacation great! |

Two of my girlfriends and I had booked a week-long trip to St. Croix a few months ago, and were very excited to visit the Virgin Islands. I honestly can say we did not do a lot of shopping around as far as checking out diffrent places to stay, but Chenay Bay did not seem to bad as far as price when we booked it.
Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed with it all around. Our "oceanview" room was more of a little small square triangle of water that we could see. Also, our sheets never got changed the whole week we were here.
I found the cottages to be quite smaller than I had expected, and they were not well maintained. The beach was a nice area, and Patrick was awesome.
Probably the main reason we ever visited the restaurant at all was because of the overpriced meals. I didn't find the front desk to be especially helpful at all. In fact, they were quite rude to us the whole time we were here. The first morning we were here, there was one woman who was very friendly and helpful and I really wish I could remember her name.
My two friends checked out kayaks, and were told to be careful not to go to far because if they accidentaly went past a certain point that no one would come out to get them.
I have to say the ocean was breathtaking - as was the whole island experience. However, I would definitely never stay at Chenay Bay again. I do not believe their resort added up to the hype they gave it on their website. We found the Divi Carina Bay to be quite nice, and I suggest checking that one out first. |

We are from London and flew to Miami on the flip of a coin for our honeymoon, and then found the Chenay Bay Beach Resort in a travel book in a bookstore in Miami.
Thankfully, when we called they had space.
We arrived late at night and were met by one of the nicest people we have ever met. She showed us to the most fantastic chalet, pure five-star. We couldn’t believe the price – it was such a great deal!
We were slipped in for a late night meal, just as the restaurant was closing. We enjoyed the best garlic prawns on the planet – yum yum.
We were even persuaded to stay for a night’s entertainment. Thank goodness! What a sight! Kids on stilts and a lovely man who did crazy things with broken bottles.
A gentleman cut coconut from a tree for us and later took our photo. The bartender was lovely, and served us fresh coconut.
Also, the beach was great, the staff was wonderful, the they had
great ladies at reception, who showed us around, persuading us to stay a while longer. They also advised us on beautiful jewelery.
We loved it. We cannot fault this place and are saving hard to return in the future.
We had a fabulous stay on our honeymoon. Here, we found paradise. It was a special trip for us, something that we would never usually be able to budget for, but we are saving hard to come back and visit.
We are forever fans! |

I was at Chenay Bay over Thanksgiving, and we had a great time. It was very family friendly. They offered complimentary watersports equipment, snorkel and life jackets in kiddie sizes, and had a playground right on the beach. It was also reasonably priced and had a good kids menu.
The staff was super friendly and they had really nice babysitters. Having a kitchenette was helpful in keeping within our budget, as there was a market and deli not far from the resort.
Our cottage was really cute and very clean. We all loved sitting on the porch watching the sunset. We rented a van and toured the island one day, and the kids loved the beer drinking pig in the rain forest at the Domino Club. We will definitely go back. |

I just returned from my honeymoon, and Chenay Bay was exactly what we wanted.
The staff was awesome! We stayed in room #5 which was right by the pool, yet secluded. They had a great sleigh bed. The snorkeling right off their beach was wonderful, too. Guests could walk for about a 1/2 mile along the beach.
Best meal deal we found was Tuesdays at their beachside restaurant. They had a buy one, get one free special, including lobster!
The grounds were so beautiful and lush. We will definitely return. |

I just returned from an eight-day vacation on the island of St. Croix. This was my first visit to this island, and I found it delightful.
The Chenay Bay Beach Resort was awesome! When we first drove into the resort, I was a little skeptical. We didn't get a view of the entire resort as the cottages were all nestled into the hillside. Once we were out of the car, we were greeted by friendly staff who let it be known that they were there to make our vacation fantastic. All we had to do was ask.
We were taken to our cottage, and once inside we were in awe of the tile floors, marble counter tops and pleasant blue and yellow color scheme. The ocean was calm and inviting, the sand was white, and the restaurant was just a few feet away.
My family and I would not hesitate in going back to this resort and we urge anyone reading this review to plan a vacation to this resort! |

Debbie, Kala and the nice people at Chenay Bay helped me plan a surprise party for my wife. We had 40 guests and it was a year in the making.
I found the staff at Chenay Bay very friendly and helpful. All of our guests had a great time. The resort had enough activities to keep the kids busy, and there was enough free space for the grown ups to relax.
The West Indies Buffet on Saturday Night was a big hit, too! Great job and thanks for one of the best vacations ever. |

We were greeted by time share salesmen who continued relentlessly throughout the week to convince us to buy a time share.
The view from the "oceanview" cottage was totally blocked by enstrangling plants and trees. There was no coffee maker. The bathroom was so small that our knees hit the wall when sitting on the toilet.
In addition, maid service was charged at 18% per day, and we failed to get any service on one day and a partial service on a second day. Management reduced our bill for one day maid service. Towels were in short supply and required long waits to get fresh towels, if at all.
The newly remodeled blinds were each approximately two to three inches too narrow for the windows, leaving large gaps in our privacy. You could look in every window from the outside, even the bathroom and the bedroom area. Also, ants were everywhere in the room.
The restaurant was frequented by a cat which was routinely fed by the guests at most tables. The only service/bartender/manager/bus person was a young woman who tried her best to meet every demand of the customers. Even with a small crowd, she was unable to provide timely service all by herself.
The beach was inundated with dead sea grass which was seldom raked, and the sea grass camouflaged the two foot dropoff at the water's edge. Our sunbathing was interrupted by hard core time share salesmen in their relentless effort despite our constant objections to sales pitches.
These complaints were presented to these time share managers "salesmen". We moved to Divi Carina Bay Resort and stayed for two weeks for the same price as the one week at Chenay Bay and had a much nicer beach, a much larger room and much better service. |

We had a family of three (and our son was 11). We enjoyed every day. There was a brief sales pitch, but we just listened and said "No thank you" and that was it.
Car rental is suggested, and we had a great time cruising the whole island in a day. The snorkeling was the best anywhere I have been, and we will be back very soon. You think alot about retiring when you are in St. Croix! |

My wife and I spent a week here and had a great time. The accommodations were great, the food was excellent, and the staff was helpful.
The resort was about three miles from town, so a car rental is urged as taxis could become expensive. You must, however, learn how to drive slowly on the left! |

Despite the fact that we visited in September (hurricane season), we still had a good time.
Our second day brought us a tropical storm and consequently no power for 24 hours, but Greg was amazing. He lived on site (unfortunately for him at times, we're sure) but he rallyed round and cooked three meals for everyone that day finishing off with a superb dinner for all 25 of us in our group.
The private beach and its amenities were an added plus. It was lovely just to walk from your bungalow right down to a beach, and even though the storms had churned the sea around a lot, it was still worth snorkeling.
The town left a lot to be desired, but it was quaint in its own way, and all the locals were very nice. This is a definite "must visit again" - only not in September. |

Thanks to Peter and Debi for their hospitality back in May 2002 when my wife and I took our 1 year old son on vacation to St. Croix. Chenay Bay donated a slew of weeks to Police Officers and Firefighters who were involved in the 9/11 attacks, rescue and recovery. After staying the week, I bought a week from Greg and have since returned there four times buying 2 additional weeks. From what I see with my own eyes, Peter believes in showing vacation owners a return in their investments. Yes, construction is ongoing and at island time pace (as is expected), however, everytime I visit Chenay Bay I thank myself for investing in vacation ownership. I see past posts on here bashing Chenay Bay and on the contrary any minor complaints I had (nothing is perfect) were swiftly rectified by either Peter, Debi or Greg. It is so quiet there that you can hear a pin drop. There are no time restrictions on use of the pool/spa/beach. Housekeeping was phenomenal and the grounds are well maintained by the grounds keepers. I rate the resort a "strong buy." |

I didn't read all the reviews before going, and find them hard to believe after returning. I did not encounter what they outlined.
The staff was great, and seemed very intent on providing a "whole island experience", although we didn't even want to leave Chenay Bay, as it was very good for us.
The beach was good for all. It was shallow for kids, fish were abundant, and you could kayak, sail, or snorkel - take your pick!
The basic rooms were more than sufficient. There were cooking facilities if you needed them. The higher end rooms were beautiful.
The restaurant was good, if not great. The price of the food was reasonable and was served with island hospitality at its finest. Basically, whatever we wanted, we just asked and it was there.
The grounds were stunning, well manicured, and the floral array was very lovely. |
