4.0 stars After 15 years at Chenay Bay, it just keeps getting better. Visited: January 2004

We have been vacationing on St. Croix for l5 years. Our first trip was to visit friends living there, and at that time we fell in love with the water, the beach and the sunsets!

We stayed at Chenay Bay as a couple for several years. Then as our family grew, children married and grandchildren came along, we found it a wonderful gathering spot. The calm, protected beach offers safety for children and serenity for stressed adults! This same calm beach is a gateway to great snorkeling, scuba, windsailing and kayaking - all right there.

Chenay Bay has been constantly improved. The time share cottages are beautifully decorated and the rental units are updated as well. They all reflect a distinctive Caribbean flair.

The personal touch of the entire staff at this family-owned resort, the beautiful sunsets, (which we gather to toast every night!) the excellent dining, both at Chenay Bay and the many high caliber restaurants on the island, have kept us coming back year after year. Our family always looks forward to this idyllic time together.

4.0 stars This was our best family vacation ever. Visited: November 2003

We chose Chenay Bay because their website was fun and looked very kid-friendly. We were not disappointed.

There was so much to do right on site. The beach was great and had the best water toys and staff to assist in snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboating, sailing, tennis, water aerobics and intro to diving that were all complimentary.

Add a great staff, fabulous food, yummy frozen drinks that were not outrageously priced, six minutes to town, great hiking, horsebackriding, sailing and you have the perfect family vacation at a great value. We will definitely return.

5.0 stars Chenay Bay has made me a repeat customer. Visited: August 2003

I've been coming to Chenay Bay for ten years now, and it never loses charm or beauty. The people are wonderful, the ocean is crystal clear, and the food at King Conch's is great. What I'd give to be there, sipping rum punch, listening to the steel pan drums...right now!

Rooms need updating. Rooms need painting. Beach is small. Resturant is ok but also very expensive compared to other area resturants. Hounded to buy a time share several times. Beach bar( the only bar) is small and the most expensive on the island. Rent a car or be stuck there. I wouldn't stay here again or recommend to anyone. With the prices for the rooms I expected a WHOLE LOT MORE.

3.0 stars Nice place, but not advertised correctly. Visited: December 2002

We stayed here from Christmas to New Year's in 2002.

Pros: Good location, near Christianstead. It is nice to be near Green Cay and the beachfront location is great. There are nice grounds and a good pool. The cottage concept is nice for privacy and attractiveness. Complimentary use of the watersports equipment is a huge plus.

Cons: The beach is nice here, but is small and sea grass abounds. The water is not the Caribbean blue seen elsewhere on the island. There is no shuttle! Be advised to rent a car or you will be stuck! Taxis are expensive and the food here costs more than anywhere else we found. The first night we were there, we had no car and had no choice but to have Christmas Dinner, which was a very average buffet for $45/adult, liquor not included.

Important: There is too much emphasis on selling and not enough on service. Food is just okay and you wait a long time for it. I asked three times before I got two more towels for the other two people staying in our room. Rooms were adequate in size with nice porches, but ours was poorly maintained. Broken air conditioning and towel bar, plus our bathroom window did not open and the toilet ran. Finally, these guys do lurk around the place trying to push the time-shares, which is a major turn-off.

Regarding service: For some reason, they employ far too few locals, except to clean (and one in the front office). In our mind, this takes away from the "Caribbean feel," and we also like to see locals employed at a place we are staying. Perhaps this would help to increase the service quality as well. Overall, we actually liked it here, but be forewarned regarding car rental, the cost of eating there, beach quality and service.

4.0 stars Chenay Bay was beautiful, clean and relaxing. Visited: July 2002

My daughter and I stayed at Chenay Bay this past July. I truly needed a tropical vacation after undergoing open heart surgery. I contacted the resort and inquired about the availablilty of a room that did not require any walking up hills and in close prximity to the amenities at the resort.

Upon arrival at Chenay Bay and checking in, to my surprised, our room was right outside of the reception area. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

My daughter and I enjoyed the room, the beach, the pool, and most definitely the food! We look forward to our return stay in July, 2003.

4.0 stars A peaceful, friendly, cozy, and complete place to stay. Visited: July 2002

We traded an RCI timeshare to stay at Chenay Bay. Our unit was a beautiful, modern cottage with one bedroom, living area and a small kitchen.

We were just 10 steps from the pool and 25 steps from the Caribbean. We used kayaks and paddled to Green Cay to snorkel and picnic. We snorkeled in the entire cove area and saw lots of beautiful fish. Watching sunsets from our porch rockers helped end every day.

Also, the restaurant served all meals (if you do not want to prepare your own) and the food was very good. Everyone was friendly and helped us determine places to see on the island using our rental car.

We will go back!

This cottage property is spectacularly landscaped...an oasis of green amongst the brown eastern end of the island in July.

The towels are thick and soft, and the restaurant delicious. All property employees are very friendly and helpful.

We had a great time there.

1.0 stars Not impressed Visited: May 2002

My husband and I stayed at the Chenay Bay the summer of 2002. Our cottage was located across from the pool. Since it was low season, this never presented a problem. The beach was disappointing in terms of size and attractiveness, but nonetheless peaceful. Our biggest disappointment was the room. It was disgusting. Everything was uncomfortable and cramped. The kitchen was filthy and run down. The entire room needed a fresh coat of paint and new furniture. The bathroom, by far, was the worst I've experienced in our extensive travel experiences. The first day the toilet backed up and it was more trouble to find someone to fix it, so we took it upon ourselves with the plunger that was conveniently located in the bathroom for guests. I've never been so disappointed in a hotel, especially for the pricey rate we paid. This hotel is definitely not a repeat.

4.0 stars We have returned year after year. Visited: March 2002

I have three children, 12, 10 and 3. We have been vacationing at Chenay Bay for the past seven years and have watched the property just get better and better.

The rooms are lovely and the family suite is perfect for five to six people. The pool is clean and has a beautiful view of the bay. The beach is small, but very nice and it is safe for the children.

My older children take out the "free" sea kayaks every day and absolutely love them. For the 3 year old, there are floats, sand toys and a playground plus the waves are never overwhelming - perfect!

The staff is very friendly and responsive. The beachfront restaurant and bar are great but there are lots of really good restaurants in town as well which you don't want to miss.

All of the units have kitchens, so you can save money by having breakfast and lunch in your room plus lots of snacks for the kids. I would highly recommend this for families.

2.0 stars Misled and disappointed Visited: March 2002

The property was pleasant, but the beach was not much to brag about. The most memorable aspects of Cheney Bay was the time share sell, the attempt to bump us out of our ocean view room once we told them we were not interested in buying into their units, and the complete absence of the owners when we wanted to lodge a complaint. Had I, or my travel agent, known this was a time share come on, I never would have gone to this place. I believe the property owners were not honest with us, nor was the wholesaler who marketed it. It could have been a very nice experience, but the focus on selling ruined our vacation.

5.0 stars A fantastic, quiet getaway with great staff. Visited: April 2001

We stayed here for ten days and it was the most relaxing vacation we have had in ten years.

The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the restaurant/bar was excellent.

We went snorkeling in the clear water of the bay and really enjoyed the privacy of the beach. A must is to rent a car to see the rest of the island.

Also, we found the other resorts to be way too touristy. If you want privacy with a good time, this resort is a must. We will definitely be going back this spring!

2.0 stars Disappointing beach and rooms, but a nice pool. Visited: February 2001
Posted by kathleen
We were very disappointed with the relatively small beach. It was not particularly clean and the water had a lot of sea grass in it, which washed up on shore and no one made any effort to clean it up. Also, the sand was not what we expected. The only things at the resort taken good care of were the landscaping and the pool, which were beautiful. The rooms needed serious updating and a good cleaning. The food in the restaurant was okay, not terrible, but not great. The water toys needed replacing. The staff for the most part was very nice, but I would not stay here again.

4.0 stars Fabulous Family Resort Visited: January 2000
Posted by ATraveler
We stayed at Chenay Bay over President's Week this year. We had heard about Chenay Bay and thought it would be great for our family reunion and it was better than expected. The resort is beautiful and the landscaping is very well maintained. They have a large pool on the bay with a hot tub at the end of it, they have free watersports, a restuaurant on the beach and tennis courts. Chenay Bay staff are second to none and must be the friendliest on the island. We had a number of small children in our group and felt completely safe letting them have the run of the property. The owner (Peter) saw us everyday and asked us if there was anything he could do for us. He also told us when we arrived what there was to do on the island, restaurants, golf and special attractions (the pig bar). These people really know about hospitality and make you feel right at home. The rooms are nice and our group had three of their oceanview family cottages high up the hill which gave us great sunset views. I would highly recommend Chenay Bay for families and family reunions

3.0 stars If you want to be hassled, stay here.... Visited: February 1999
Posted by ATraveler
We stayed here for a week in February, 1999. We found the property to be about as expected-quiet and quaint. We were horrified, however, by the constant hounding by timeshare salespeople. They spied on you, struck up superficial conversation, and bought a few drinks, etc., leading up to the big sell job. After sitting through a two hour used-car session, we of course said no. We were then treated like lepers. I was not anticipating this, and frankly, it ruined our trip.

3.0 stars A nice, quiet, unassuming place. Visited: December 1969
Posted by pfeakins
Our family stayed here for 1998 Christmas. Before Christmas it was practically deserted. The rooms are large and contained a basic kitchen. The rooms are more like cabins with many of them attached. We had two attached rooms, so our cabin was all our own. My three teenagers fit in one room easily. The rooms are somewhat basic, but clean. None are very far from the beach.

The beach is not much. It is not very deep and the sand is not the sugar sand you might find elsewhere. The beach overlooks a cove that is fairly calm and good for kids. They claim there is a reef to explore, but we found it fairly inaccessible because of the wind and the waves. There is great snorkeling elsewhere. There are kayaks and a sailfish. There is a pool and a basic restaurant and bar overlooking the beach.

If you want to eat something quick or reasonably simple, it is fine. There is a great hamburger place just down the road and there are other restaurants from beachy to elegant a short car drive away.

What I liked best about Chenay Bay was the peace and quiet and the tremendously helpful staff. They could not do enough for us.

4.0 stars Fantastic staff. Very helpful and friendly. Visited: December 1969

We spent our honeymoon at Chenay Bay Beach resort and enjoyed it. The room was big enough and the kitchenette was nice to have. I do not recommend going to the Schooner Bay Market (which was where they directed the tourists) because everything costs about double what it should. There were other markets, and there was apparently a better one, turning left (away from Christiansted), where the locals go.

We enjoyed snorkeling the reefs in the bay, and especially the full day to Buck Island. But don't take the trip where they feed you along with dozens of other people. Go on the 6-person catamaran. It was much nicer.

The staff at Chenay Bay couldn't have been more helpful, especially Brenda. They pitched a time-share thing at us, but they gave us $50 for it, so we blew a morning listening to it. We, of course, passed but no one treated us poorly afterwards or anything like that.
A thoroughly enjoyable place to relax.
