I just got back from a trip to the Virgin Islands and a great stay at the Tamarind. My brother and I wanted to be close to town to avoid having to rent a car, so the hotel location was very convienent.
The Inn was basic, but clean and comfortable. Air conditioning and cable were a plus! We hung out in the courtyard bar, met lots of St. Johnians, and had some good affordable meals.
The trip and stay was great - we are already planning to bring our families next year. |

We just returned from our first trip to St. John, and we had a wonderful stay at The Tamarind. The hotel is not for the "resort" traveler, it is for travelers that are on a budget and want to feel like a "local"!
The rooms were clean, air conditioned, and had a cable TV..though we never turned it on. The food in the restaurant was wonderful, and also reasonably priced.
The manager was adorable, and took very good care of us. She was helpful in telling us how to get around and where to go. All the staff was friendly and accommodating - plus we met a lot of locals, who we look forward to seeing again on our next trip!
If you are looking for an inexpensive hotel with an island feel, this place is perfect for you! |

We just returned from our first trip to St. John and had a wonderful stay at The Tamarind. All the staff was friendly and very accommodating from the time we booked our room to when we checked-out.
The room was quant and had A/C, cable and nice Caribbean decor. The atmosphere in the courtyard was fun, and we were able to meet lots of "locals" that have lived on the island for years and are very loyal to the Tamarind...which is always a good sign!
The Inn was located walking distance from town, so it is was convenient to get around without renting a car. We really enjoyed our stay and will be back next year! |

My husband and I stayed at the Tamarind for three days and wished we had booked for more. We had a room with a queen size bed, tv and private bath. It was clean, comfortable, and tastefully decorated. It was nothing fancy...but that's what we were looking for.
It was an easy walk to the dock and commericial area of Cruz Bay. The staff was very friendly, no complaints. We'll be going back next year! |

My daughter and I stayed at Tamarind again this year. It was basic, but clean, and with nice people. There were no bugs that I saw, and the chickens were gone. Yes, the dog barked, but there is nothing anyone can do about neighbors who don't care.
There is nothing fancy here, but who stays in the room anyway, but to sleep and shower? We plan to return this November. Enjoy St. John, it's beautiful. Check out the Tamarind tree out back, it is interesting. |

What a mess. We checked into the Inn and had an 8pm reservation at the restaurant. My friends and I left at 10pm because food still hadn't been served. We received excuse after excuse, yet nobody would take responsibility or even comp our drinks including the new owner. To top it all off, we paid $129/night for a terrible room. St. John is awesome, just stay at somewhere else. |

Our stay at Tamarind Inn was a total nightmare. We checked in at about 9pm after spending a long day all around the island. We decided to freshen up a little and then grab something to eat. When we decided to go get something to eat, I tried to open the door and it was jammed. To make a long story short we were stuck for an hour and a half and they had to knock the door down. After all of this hassle the manager asked us why we locked the room. The manager was really rude to us did not give us a discount on the room. Instead he gave us another smaller room with twin-sized beds for $120/night. Please if you want to have a pleasant stay at St. John, don’t stay at Tamarind Inn. |

This has been one of my worst travel experiences in St. John and I have traveled extensively. First, for $60 per night one should expect a clean room. Wrong! The floors were filthy, the linens were stained, and the room was infested with mosquitoes. Every morning, I faced swarms of mosquitoes in the bathroom. After day two, I showered at a friend's restrooms, and even with the heavy traffic there, it was cleaner.
To make matters worse, the staff booked me for an extra day and when I brought it to their attention, the owner's response was "Well you read the cancellation policy." After I explained that I was not canceling but that my itinerary read that I would be leaving on a day later. The owner again stated, "You were aware of the cancellation policy." I simply asked for a refund for the extra day not a refund for entire week. I still cannot believe I paid for such horrible service.
The restaurant and bar staff was so friendly and gracious. That was the one great thing I can say about the Inn at Tamarind Court.
I understand the Inn is under new management, so this might be the cause of these problems. |

On our most recent visit to this beautiful island, we were on a tight budget, so decided to give Tamarind a try. It was perfect for us!
We are not the type to spend much time in our room, but our rooms were clean (no bugs), most noise from outside was drowned out by the AC (nice and cold), and the staff was very friendly.
The food at the restuarant was always very good (we ate there several times). We were looking for a place that we could sleep and shower that was clean and close to town, to avoid renting a car. We were very pleased with our experience here, and look forward to returning. |

What a deal! Visited: August 2001 |

I traveled solo to St. John as a last-minute getaway, and needed to keep it cheap.
I did not come here to stay in a some fancy room or spend time on the grounds of a hotel. Sure, a private house in the hills would have been nice, but I stayed in an economy room for five nights for less than I would have paid for one night at other places on the island.
The room was nothing special, but I did not have any problem with that. It actually was pleasant to have such casual accommodations. Someone had told me to take a taxi up from the dock, but that would be a waste, unless you are not travelling light. It was all of a five-minute walk just up the hill.
As soon as I arrived, I checked in at the bar, had a rum and Coke and met three people before I ever saw my room. I ended up meeting a dozen or so locals and other travelers, and found that I could have a great time in the evening sitting at the outside bar and drinking before heading down the street to bar hop in town.
I ended up eating many meals at the hotel, including breakfast, because the food was great and the prices were fair. Each day I was up early and out to wander the island and the beaches. It was a quick walk to the dock for those who want to island hop on the ferries or catch a taxi to the north shore.
With the money I saved staying here, I was able to spend it on other things. And, if you want a nice resort with a pool, you can walk over the hill to the Westin. I hung out there a few times to lounge around and relax.
I will be returning to the island in a few months and will be staying at the Inn again. |

Friendly, clean, casual, economical and comfortable Visited: June 2001 |

The Inn is a great economical alternative to more pricey places.
The room was very clean, cold window air-conditioner, quiet, comfortable, reasonably roomy and plain, yet very satisfactory furnishings and ambience.
The owner and staff were all very friendly, cooperative, helpful and attentive, and gave us their frank opinions of various island experiences. The courtyard/bar/restaurant area was a delight with a casual '60's atmosphere. It was a nice combination of locals and tourists, friendly and informal, and the service and food were great. We especially appreciated the complimentary continental breakfast and the optional full breakfast offerings were very reasonable and quite good. The evening live entertainment provided a lively atmosphere for several hours.
The location is great; it is a little of an exertion (walk) from the heart of downtown up a grade that becomes fairly steep as you get to the Inn, but it is quite manageable and was good exercise for us. We did walk from the ferry with our luggage (on-wheels) to the Inn with the directions that the Inn provided, which is about 15 minutes from the dock. And it was very convenient to walk and explore the downtown from this centrally-located Inn.
In summary, if you want a casual, inexpensive and friendly alternative to more pricey resorts, we very highly recommend the Inn. We definitely would return there if we ever make it back to St. John and the delightful beaches, especially Trunk Bay, are wonderful, as is the small-town ambience of Cruz Bay.

Not really worth it. Visited: February 2001 |

The rooms are adequate, almost cute, the bathrooms tiny. But here is the problem: there are no windows, just screens with blinds so that all kinds of bugs get in. We had a caravan of ants in our bathroom that continued around the lip of the shower for two days. The worst part about not having windows, however, is the noise. There are dogs barking throughout the night (right next door), locals cruising in their cars with their radios blasting, and worst of all, roosters right outside crowing at 5:30 am and continuing to crow all day long! The cost for a room may be cheap but it is not worth having to forfeit your sanity.
On the plus side, it is close to downtown and the breakfasts were good. The staff is also pleasant, though very apathetic. If you told them a complaint that the water or the electricity went out (which occurs quite often) or a story that you were attacked by barracuda while snorkeling (didn't happen)—you would get the same response, no apology just "That's life on the island," served with a sarcastic grin.
If you have no other choice but to stay at this place bring earplugs, mosquito repellent, and go to bed early. You don't need an alarm clock because there are plenty of those roaming the courtyard. Otherwise, you’re better off staying somewhere else.

Great value and friendly atmosphere Visited: December 2000 |

I stayed at the Inn at Tamarind Court for five days between Christmas and New Year's, and I would choose to stay there again every time I'm on St. John. On an island that is extremely pricey when it comes to accommodations, the Tamarind's value can't be beat. My room was clean, the bathroom was fine (no ants or other bugs), and while the roosters did serve as a natural alarm clock the first morning, I either got used to them after that or they gave me a break the next few days. Either way, they didn't annoy me in the least.
The best parts of staying at the Tamarind were the service and the sushi. I'm still craving that sushi! From the moment I arrived, the staff greeted me by name, and by the second day they (and the locals who hang out in the bar/courtyard) were treating me like an old friend.
The location also can't be beat; the inn is within easy walking distance to the ferry dock, dozens of restaurants and bars, most of the car rental offices, the dive shop, and a grocery store.
If you want hermetically sealed rooms at $400+ rates per night, stay at a chain hotel, but if you want to meet lots of fun people (I was traveling alone) and save your money for other things, I highly recommend Tamarind.
