4.0 stars Our stay was very enjoyable. Visited: April 2005

This was our fourth year in St. Thomas and the first at the Wyndham. This was our best stay. We loved the food, but we are not fussy eaters! The service was good. You have to realize that the people here are very laided back. You have to get to know them. They say the "down islanders" are the most friendy.

The room was great, with a good view. It was cleaned each day. We had the all-incusive, which was the first time we did this, but I recommend it. There was no tipping unless we wanted to.

We stayed the last week of April which was their carnival. This made traffic worse, but it was always busy downtown.

This stay was better than last year when we stayed at another upscale resort.

The pool located down the hill was different, but the car ran every ten minutes, so that was not a problem. You can walk down easy.

1.0 stars We thought it was terrible. Visited: January 2005

My family scheduled an eight-day stay at the Wyndham Sugar Bay in January 2005. The experience was horrible, and we transferred to another hotel after staying only one night.

We thought the rooms were dirty and showed years of neglected repairs. The food was average at best, and the staff seemed to have an attitude.

Also, the pool area was poorly maintained, and the beach was cluttered with debris and old beach furniture. The only redeeming aspect of this hotel was its manager who apologized for all the representations presented in the brochures and by the travel agency. The hotel was an embarrassment to the Wyndham chain.

Travelers beware, not everything is as presented.

4.0 stars It was clean, friendly and very relaxing. Visited: January 2005

I read and reread the reviews before we left for Sugar Bay and I was almost afraid to go. We stayed for ten days at this resort and it was great.

The rooms were clean, and housekeeping was very efficient. We got anything we asked for. There were a lot of stairs to get to and from the pool area, but for those of us who didn't want to use them, the shuttle ran until 11:00 every night.

We never ran into an employee who wasn't helpful. The activities people were fun, and the food was great and plentiful. The beach was small, but was beautiful and never crowded.

I can't imagine anyone not having a good time here.

3.0 stars It was a nice resort, but the food was bad. Visited: January 2005

The resort was nice. Our room was okay, and the view was spectacular. The staff was also nice. However, the hot tub was cold.

Make sure you ask for a room with a view of St. John.

Our big complaint was the food and the beach. The beach was okay, but not beautiful as we were looking straight at dated houses and an uninhibited island.

3.0 stars Fair at best Visited: August 2004

My wife and I came here on our honeymoon expecting a beautiful, romantic resort. What we found was far from that. Our first impression was our check-in, which should have been no problem since I had called twice to confirm our requests. However, upon arrival, we were told that our room requests could not be met (high floor, non-smoking, king size bed). Instead, they assigned us a room on the 1st floor with 2 double beds and smoking. We got the impression that they see so many newlyweds, that they just don't care about the service. We did manage to get a better room (I was not going to settle, but now ran into the problem we had with bugs crawling on our walls and a tempermental shower that turned off frequently. We did not opt for the all-inclusive option because we wanted to try diffetent restaraunts. This became quite costly, as they charged $9 for a lousy 4oz. burger or $18-35 per person to eat their buffet. We were able to eat at a number of restaraunts, but the taxi's are expensive ($4-$8 per person for short trips). The pools are decent, but were in dire need of cleaning and the small beach was loaded with rocks. The Journey's spa was great and I would recommend asking for Ali as a your massage therapist. Many of the elevators were not working and I lost several dollars in the soda vending machines as well. There were a few pleasant and courtous employees here, but overall it seemed that us tourists were a bother to them.

2.0 stars Our experience here was mediocre at best. Visited: December 2003

We just came home from St. Thomas 12/29/03. We thought the Wyndham Sugar Bay left much to be desired. Our food was of poor quality and they never tried to accommodate our needs, either. My kids (ages 11 and 13) lived off of lousy, over cooked pizza, burgers ( fast food quality), good hot dogs and grilled cheese (not on the menu).

Also, the entertainment was almost non-existent.

Our room had a nice ocean view, but it came with lots of bugs. That could be because the maids seemed to only carry their vaccum cleaners but never use them. The room was dirty and - like the entire hotel - needed to be renovated.

The pools looked much better in pictures. They also needed to be refinished.

The beach was nice to look at, but the water had a reef so close to shore that we didn't want to swim there. It was very rocky and hard to get into the water.

As for service, other than at the gift shop and dive shop, it seemed that most of the employees couldn't care less as far as providing any service. They listened, walked away and did nothing.

Regarding watersports - guests could get snorkel equipment and make diving arrangements, but you dive from the Grand Bay Palace two hotels over. To get there you either have to walk over rocks or take a taxi ($4pp). The hotel did not provide transportation.

The Wyndham Sugar Bay was a major disappointment and we are still scratching from all of our bug bites! I will never stay here again! Even my husband, who never complains, was unhappy here.

4.0 stars Wyndham was a great place to relax. Visited: May 2003
Posted by lisa51698
I stayed at the Wyndham from May 26th until June 2nd. This place was beautiful and romantic, but if you're looking for constant partying - this is not the place for you. This was the type of resort to let your stress flow out.

The beach was very small, and I would recommend boat shoes. If you are afraid of iguanas, this is not the place for you. They are all over the place by the pool/beachside. They do not bother you unless you feed them (they will want more) or if you antagonize them. They will not attack you or eat your big toe (as said in the other reviews).

The food was good here, but there was only one restaurant (besides the buffet or grill). Also, the drinks were plentiful. There wasn't an entertainment staff - but they tried to have some activities here and there.

We had beautiful weather (heads up - hurricane season for them starts June 1). The view was beautiful - almost the entire hotel was an oceanview room (so don't spend more). My husband and I came home so relaxed and so full of life. It was like we were honeymooners all over.

2.0 stars Mixed Review of Hotel and Employees Visited: March 2003
Posted by c_schillig
Our room was what clean and had a good view of the beach and ocean. The food received mixed reviews. If you didn't eat around primetime, your food was a bit cold. We called it island temp.

The natives are not particularly friendly in general (not just in the resort). Service was an issue. A lot of times people acted as if they wish you weren't here, or they wished they weren't here. Either one, you didn't feel particularly welcomed.

If I had the choice of Hawaii or St Thomas (I've been to both), I would choose Hawaii by a long shot.

3.0 stars This was a nice family resort. Visited: January 2003

Our family of five enjoyed the Wyndham. However, those iguanas really were annoying. I didn't think much of it reading other reviews about the iguanas being bothersome, but they were by the pool area and we had to leave our little area because two of them were fighting right by our chairs.

The beach was nice. However, there were numerous rocks which made it very difficult to get into the water. The food was also good. There were two main restaurants and the Manor House usually had the best food. The pool side grill had good chicken sandwiches.

The pool was way too cold. The jacuzzi was way too hot and the iguanas were all over the jacuzzi area. The staff told us even though the iguanas didn't have teeth, they could bite and also whip us with their tail. So we stayed away!

The rooms were okay. The bathrooms needed new caulking jobs. We had a gorgeous view, though. The pool activities were okay, but could use some improvement. The stairs down to the pool were no big deal. The resort grounds were beautiful.

You have to take the ferry over to St. John and experience their absolutely beautiful beaches. With the all-inclusive, you could check out their scuba gear and use it for the whole stay for $5.00/per person. If you didn't want to pay the $5, you have to return it by 4:00 pm the same day.

The staff was very friendly and the service was good. But sometimes it was rather slow. Overall, the Wyndham was a nice resort. We stayed at the Wyndham Rose Hall in Jamaica and liked that better for our family.

4.0 stars A great vacation at a beautiful resort with friendly staff. Visited: October 2002
Posted by dbrown
I read these reviews before I went and did not know what to expect, but I had a great time at the resort.

I found the resort to be beautiful, the staff friendly, and the food to be good with plenty of it. The beach was small but beautiful, and snorkeling was fantastic right off the beach. There were also plenty of watersports available right on the beach. I could see the size of the beach being a problem during high-season.

About the staff - they were friendly, only one night in the Manor House did I feel it was understaffed. The service was slow that night. Do not go expecting to be waited on like in Mexico...relax - you are on vacation!

If you like the all-inclusive vacation way, with beautiful water, grounds, semi-fast service, watersports - I would recommend Wyndham Sugar Bay.

Also, the resort location was close to Red Hook to catch the ferry to St. John, and Coki Beach and Coral World were right around the corner. Spend the extra money for Oceanview rooms - the sunrise over St. John was unbelieveable!

My husband and I were married in May 2002... Shelby and Naomi the wedding coordinators were GREAT!! Everything went good...pictures were beautiful.

It was an alright resort if you like the all-inclusive way. I will never stay at an all-inclusive resort again...food is not of good quality. We ate more outside of the resort because of this. Staff was friendly.

Anytime we picked up our room phone we were charged $1...even for local calls and calling card calls.

Beach was small but nice...hammocks were a nice touch to the beach.

Overall, our stay was average...will not stay at the Sugar Bay if we ever return to St. Thomas.

4.0 stars A nice family resort with some ups and downs. Visited: April 2002

This was a nice family resort. We have been to Mexico and Hawaii and several other places, so we had a lot to compare it with.

The rooms were very clean and had great views (buildings C and D). The island culture was definitely not as "customer focused" as in Mexico...don't expect to be pampered or catered to. We felt like it was a self-service vacation. I suspect that was everywhere and not just at our resort.

The pool was not crowded, and there were plenty of chairs. Food and drink was close by - just a little slow on the service- "island time" was what they called it.

We spent a day on St. John where there was very nice shopping and sight seeing. The night snorkeling trip was awesome and day sail was a blast also. My kids are 14 and 17 and they had a very good time.

Food options were adequate at pool side and in the fancy dinner restaurant. Bar service was a little slow, but drinks were very good and worth the wait. Cab fares were high, so plan your days accordingly! It was worth a visit one time- absolutely!

5.0 stars It was better than I expected. Visited: March 2002

We just returned from a two-week vacation at Sugar Bay.

The resort was very impressive, with extensive gardens that were immaculately maintained. A watercourse ran though the gardens, featuring various wild birds, iguanas, etc.

The 101 steps down to the pool were quite enjoyable, as the views were marvelous and there were plenty of different viewpoints to stop and look at. But there was also a very regular shuttle service that took you down to the pool.

The pools were more than adequate with three sections giving plenty of space to find your own area to swim or play games. People have commented on the water being too cold, however we found it a pleasant relief from the sun.

By the pool, there was a snack bar, which served chicken/vegetarian/beef burgers, hotdogs and salad. They also had free crisps, which were available all day. There were never more than three people waiting for food (note: if you want a chicken burger, it takes 15 – 20 minutes as it is cooked from fresh).

For a more substantial lunch, there was a buffet at the Mangrove Café, also by the pool. They had dishes that would suit the whole family, from pizza, chips, cakes and ice cream to pasta, spaghetti and meatballs, salad and various Caribbean fare.

The evening meals offered two choices, the buffet dinner in the Mangrove Café, or a la Carte in the Manor House. We did the buffet dinner once, and it was excellent. But our preference was the Manor House, we tend to enjoy dressing up for dinner. The ambiance was romantic, with candles and low lights. Some nights there was a saxophone player, which was pleasant.

The breakfast at the Manor House was sumptuous. Everything was available - fruit, made to order omelettes and eggs, bacon, potatoes, cereals, Danish pastries, etc.

The entertainment was on par with other resorts we have been to, i.e. Sandals. Every night at the Ocean Club there was a band and singer. There were also bands and a weekly show by the poolside.

There were no free shuttles to town, but the taxis service was quite excellent.

The excursion desk was more than helpful. We went on various excursions. Some were tailor made to our request, and everything was organized for us and nothing was too much trouble for them.

We found this to be an excellent hotel. It was well managed, with excellent service and food. We thought it compared very favorable with five-star hotels we had visited in the Caribbean.

The service issue must have been addressed, as we found the service throughout the resort to be friendly, efficient and always helpful. We would not hesitate to come back if we were to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands again.

3.0 stars Could be better Visited: March 2002

Just returned from a six day trip. The island is absolutely beautiful but costly. A cab ride to town for four of us was $35 each way. The shopping is good. Cigarettes and liquor were a bargain.

The resort was clean and the staff friendly. Food was not so great. The food is not kid friendly. One day at lunch there was a kid's table with chicken fingers, fries etc. The next day no such service existed.

Night activities were non-existent. Carnival night was the only night that was fun.

One huge problem was the water. If you had any there was a good chance it was cold.

Overall, it was good but could be better.

Our trip to St. Thomas was wonderful.

The resort was nicely located near the ferry launch in Red Hook. So, day trips to St.John were a five-minute jeep ride, followed by a 25-minute ferry.

The best beaches in the world were mere moments away!

4.0 stars Great vacation! Visited: January 2002

We had decided in advance to have a great vacation, so that was certainly a factor. The room was clean and large with a great view. The staff was friendly with a few exceptions. Some of the food was good, some not so good, but there were plenty of choices. The beach is small and rocky, but great for snorkeling.

There were a few minor problems and irritations, but nothing big. The nightlife is non-existent at the resort. Would I return? Probably not. I would explore some other resorts.

4.0 stars Better than expected. Visited: December 2001

My wife, 15-year old daughter and I visited Sugar Bay for 4 days during Christmas week. We had only moderate expectations, but were very pleasantly surprised.

While not ideally located (away from town), the property is beautiful and well maintained. We found the service to be excellent (not just by Caribbean, but by any standard). The staff was both friendly and efficient. While the beach is small, there are more than adequate number of chaises; ditto for the pool area.

The food was okay, but lacked in variety. Also, activities are somewhat limited. On the whole, we'd definitely say that Sugar Bay is both a good value and pleasant place for a short holiday.
