Going off a recommendation from our friend Sean, my husband and I decided to book our winter getaway vacation at an eco-camp in the Virgin Island National Park called VIERS.
Sean's parents are long-time volunteers at VIERS-Environmental Research station on St. John. Volunteers are what the camp relies on to keep it up and running. They do everything from the cleaning to the cooking, and not to mention give great trail hiking advice.
Staying at VIERS is a communal experience where you share your dinner table with strangers, clean your own dishes, and shower outside in shared showers. Be advised showers longer than three minutes are highly frowned upon because all the water at the camp is recycled rainwater.
The bohemian vibe is prevalent at all times during the camp experience. Pollution and waste is nearly undetectable at VIERS, as campers rarely take more than they need at meal-time, there is a strict "no smoking policy", and campers generally don't even have cars at the camp because walking to near by Lameshur Bay is a stones throw away.
The closest beaches to VIERS are conceivably the most magnificent beaches on all of St. John, where it is not uncommon to witness sea turtles and stingrays while snorkeling.
Modern amenities consist of shared bunkhouses where campers truly get a taste of nostalgia. The shared bunkhouses consist of about 6-8 twin mattresses beds in true camping style reminiscence of childhood summer camp. Showers and toilets are also common spaces, as is camp R&R areas.
VIER was nothing short of a spectacular experience for us. Also, be sure to check out the ferry schedule from St. Thomas to St. John to get over to the island. From there hitchhiking is a plausible option, as are cabs and rental cars to get you over to VIERS. |
