This is a wonderful place to stay in paradise. Visited: November 2003 |

This is a great place to stay if you want to explore the island by day but still have a nice place to relax in the evenings. There is no air conditioning, television, or phone in the rooms, so if you need these amenities to survive, this isn't the place for you!
That said, we didn't miss any of them at all. We stayed here for our honeymoon in November 2003, and had a great time. We got the upstairs room and enjoyed the private deck and the nice breeze (temperature was in the 80s most days).
The room was beautiful, just as in the pictures on their website, and the owners were very friendly and helpful. They supplied a great breakfast every day, good information and advice, and even coolers and beach chairs.
There was a rooster running around the area and some construction noise, but not enough to bother us. We would definitely come back and stay here in the future!

We just purchased Garden by the Sea in August, 2005. The most recent renovations included adding AC to all the guest rooms. Now the guest rooms are private, climate controlled, and quiet. We do make available plenty of towels & beach towels for our guests use. Breakfast is different every morning: frittatas, bacon, eggs benedict florentine, wild cherry muffins and French Toast to name a few. Please come visit us, you won’t be disappointed. A great location, adorable room, a real tropical hideaway! Visited: January 2003 |

My husband and I recently returned from our honeymoon, in the Garden Suite room. It was a dreamlike room for us, with gorgeous blue walls, tropical artwork, and handsome furniture. The whole place felt very comfortable and was wonderfully appointed. The tropical shower was great - I've never seen anything like it.
We enjoyed the privacy this little inn provided, (only four other guests were here, and the place was full!). It was also nice to have a tropical breakfast right there on the deck each morning before starting the day.
The path to the nearby beach and town was a bonus for the days we did not rent a car, and the Art Gallery at the end of the trail on the beach was definitely worth stopping at!
I definitely recommend Garden by the Sea for a getaway on St. John. We hope to return to this little paradise bed and breakfast! |

This is an adorable little place.
My sister and I stayed in the garden room and were so pleased with the quiet tropical feel and privacy. With only six guests at any time, it was a mellow place for sure. Our room had great books on how to relax, and boy, did we!
The hosts were very freindly and had great tips for us. The lack of air conditioning was not a problem at all, we loved listening to the frogs at night and the ceiling fan and bed fans kept the room cool.
Our room was clean, with nice cotton linens that were changed mid-week, and we were even given beach towels, too! Breakfast was also nice - it was serve yourself and simple. We definitely loved the french toast and homemade quiche, too.
My sister stayed at the campgrounds last year for about the same price, which amazes me, so stay here soon before the word really gets out.

Overall, we were disappointed Visited: January 2002 |

We expected a charming atmosphere and great view, no problem there.
But our room had no ceiling fan, a real problem in a room facing west, with no cross ventilation, and temperatures reaching 85 degrees every day. Two small fans were provided, but they were inconvenient to move around.
Most importantly, there was no linen service for 4 days. Given that most visitors go to the beach every day, that left us with some pretty salty, sandy and wet towels and sheets before we left.
We were in the Ginger Room, on the main level, and there was no privacy at all. The door opened onto the communal patio just three feet from the common room with sofas and kitchen. The choices were to close the curtains for privacy, and swelter, or open the door and window and give everyone a show.
The pathway to town went by the touted salt pond, a brackish brown water lined with people's backyard trash. It got you to town (requires flashlight and careful attention after dark) but it wasn't particularly pleasant.
Breakfasts were passable, consisting of grocery store danish and bagels most days. There certainly was no fresh-cooked French Toast.
The view of sunsets was great, and the lush foliage around the deck was wonderfully tropical, but there was no garden as I'd expected. |

A great quiet find with sweet owners. Visited: December 2001 |

My mother and I recently traveled to the US Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands, and made all our reservations through the Internet. We loved Garden by the Sea. This hideaways webpage does not do it enough justice.
We were treated to a clean, cute and wonderfully exotic room with special touches. My mother and I truly appreciated all the great advice, and friendly hospitality. We really felt at home. We found great little beaches and spots I know we could never have searched out on our own, and it made this trip very special and effortless. The owners went out of their way to accommodate my mother’s special diet for breakfasts, too.
Of all the 4 places we traveled to on our last Caribbean trip - this was our favorite, and remarkably the least expensive. We will be back. |

We have stayed at this wonderful property twice, and are looking forward to returning again.
The first time we stayed in the Wild Ginger Room. Although it was not extremely private, it was acceptable for our needs.
We were pleasantly surprised by the romantic, relaxed atmosphere and the owners immediately made us feel right at home. Alyson and Jim were very helpful in recommending great spots for snorkeling and beaching, as well as great spots to eat out. Breakfasts each day were very tasty and sustained us well into the afternoon.
During our second stay, we had the suite. It provided us much privacy with a sitting room facing the deck. All the appointments in both rooms had a tropical flair and lent to the romantic island atmosphere. The garden showers were the best!
We look forward to returning again and again--and at the prices, you can't beat it! |

Beautiful, private, friendly, great location Visited: June 2000 |

We visited Garden-by-the-Sea this June (2000) and it was just like we had entered paradise. The room appointments were beautiful - a real Caribbean atmosphere, clean, and distinctive. The owners were friendly, informative, and incredibly nice.
Our stay was one of our best vacations ever. We loved St John with it's beauty not marred by overdevelopment.
Garden-by-the-sea was the perfect place to stay. The location was great - close to town, yet secluded. The sunset views were outstanding. We give it the highest marks! |

| Garden by the Sea Bed and Breakfast sits just a 10-minute walk from St. John's main town of Cruz Bay. Overlooking a small salt pond and the ocean, this cozy spot is surrounded by lush vegetation that gives it its name. The three rooms have private entrances... |
