It is okay for a night, but don't plan to stay and relax. Visited: February 2006 |

I had high expectations after reading previous comments, but I think folks were just being 'nice'.
The Inn has great potential...it's a beautiful piece of property that was probably great 'in its day'. It appears the owner either doesn't have the time, or doesn't dedicate the time to keep up the property.
The Inn doesn't invite you to relax and enjoy the grounds...you have to leave the Inn to be comfortable. The grounds are overgrown, and the outside furniture/features are not maintained or seem inviting to guests. Obviously nobody was using anything outside their rooms...you wouldn't want to!
Even the pool was covered, but we were invited to pull off the cover if we wanted to use it! Again, that is not a very inviting touch. It appears the owner doesn't work the property...he has a full-time job elsewhere. That is no problem at all if there's someone else taking care of business at the Inn, but that is clearly not the case.
The room is small, but well-equipped. There is a small furnished kitchen, TV, in-room phone, and an air conditioner (bonus!). What it lacks is an emphasis on cleanliness. Our bedding was clean, but the ceiling fan and surrounding ceiling were filthy. Also, the bath tub was rusted and clogged! The towels were clean, but they were old and full of holes.
Bottom line...my wife and I were not comfortable staying at the Inn at Pelican Heights. Although we had reservations for a week+, we ended-up staying only one night. The next morning we called around and were fortunate enough to locate another inn for the remainder of the week. It turned out to be a great move!
On a positive note...
When I contacted the owner about my displeasure with his inn, he willingly let me out of my contract period and did not charge me for the one night we stayed (including breakfast). That is a class act.
My wife and I are not picky, snooty, or fussy. We simply expect and want to stay somewhere clean and comfortable. We stayed at two other inns on the island during our three-week stay; both were superb and met our every expectation (my wife wrote those reviews!).
If you need a place to crash for the night, the Inn at Pelican Heights is fine. If you're planning to stay for a while and you're looking for a clean and comfortable place to relax, I'd look elsewhere. |

Return to St. Croix and Pelican Heights. Visited: February 2004 |

We did something that previous visitors to St. Croix always claim they will do but somehow never get the chance to: We went back for our second visit. This time we stayed 11 days and enjoyed every warm and sunny minute.
Once again we stayed at the Inn at Pelican Heights and Fred Laue (our host) hasn't missed a beat. From the personal service Fred offers to the breakfasts that can't be beat, it was a nice break from the New England weather.
The Inn is located ten minutes from Christiansted in a very quiet area. It's easy to get to and makes a great base for exploring the island. The island is lush and very green thanks to lots of winter rain.
Drive and hike through the rain forest, swim, snorkel, dive, day trip out to Buck Island with Big Beard, go horseback riding, go to the crab races.......do it all or do nothing at all! Either way you'll have a great time.
Luncheria is still serving the best Mexican food on the island (and potent Margaritas) and makes a good first day lunch stop. Other great places to eat are Breezes, the Galleon, Bacchus, Duggin's Reef, the new H2O at the Hibiscus Beach Hotel and of course the world famous Off The Wall.
We spent several days at the Carambola Resort beach on the north side and several more lazing away the afternoon at Off The Wall. We found the island to be uncrowded as cruise ships do not stop there anymore.
Sadly, Fredriksted relied so heavily on cruise ships and the passenger/tourist money that the area is now like a ghost town. Most of the shops are closed and opening soon doesn't look promising. We will return again in a few years and I think it's a safe bet that nothing will have changed. Perfect! |

I enjoyed peace and quiet away from it all, yet not far away from town. Visited: February 2002 |

We highly recommend the Inn at Pelican Heights to anyone who wants a taste of St. Croix without paying the high prices of hotels and resorts.
We stayed in the Pelican's Perch and it provided more than enough room for two adults. There was a kitchen for those who want to save money and cook some of their own meals. The honor bar was a welcome site after a long flight. Also, lounging by the pool with a margarita after a day at the beach was the perfect late afternoon activity.
Fred (the owner) was eager to help guests find their way around and would sit and highlight beaches and points of interest on maps for them.
The daily breakfast in the Gallery was not to be missed! Jennifer did a terrific job making delicious breakfast dishes and the view was superb.
This was one place we would definitely return to again and again as we escape from the New England winters.
Be sure to stop in at Off the Wall, probably the coolest and funkiest bar on the island.
And remember to drive on the left! |
