Green Iguana Hotel, St. Thomas, USVI traveler review

What a Great Place to Stay Visited: November 2008
Posted by happykampr
The week that we spent at the Green Iguana was absolutely great. Managers Sue and Buddy were extremely helpful in pointing out attractions to see, places to eat, and things to do. The in room kitchen helped for quick meals. Located off of downtown, it was a short walk to shopping and restaurnts. The use of laundry facilities at the hotel was also very convenient. Clean and secure, it was the perfect place to launch out from regardless of our activities on St Thomas or the surrounding Islands. We would go back again in a heartbeat.

The views and beach were great. Visited: October 2008

We had two rooms for five of us. This was right above the tennis courts with an ocean view. It was an excellent value for the money. I'm not sure I'd pay the "higher" listed rates, though, given some other properties I've stayed locally.

If you want views, comfort, etc. - it comes recommended.

The restaurant we ate at was mediocre and way, way overpriced, though. Keep that in mind.

The reviews are in - from not only myself, a seasoned traveler, but also my wife and family. I planned a five-person get away for the family, and wanted clean, safe surroundings with convenience to town. My expectations were far exceeded!

Sue and Buddy were great, accommodating, and the perfect hosts. My father dislocated his shoulder during the trip, our car got a flat, and there were other adventures, but the place felt like home - and we had a great time even after the bumps. I could go on, but you already get the picture.

We hope to visit St. Thomas again sometime soon!

When I read the other reviews, I was sceptical that it could be that good. It was!

Sue and Buddy were the best. Whatever we needed, they would furnish it (even WD 40 for removing sticker glue!). We loved the place, the views - everything.

There were four of us who shared a double bedroom room. It was so pretty and clean. Also, the bananas off the tree were so good.

If, or when, we go back, we will surely stay at The Green Iguana again. Thanks Sue and Buddy! People like you are what makes a good vacation great.

Do not use VIP Yacht Charters (www.vipyachts.com) on St. Thomas.
Posted by blondijones
I would highly recommend not using them ever!

In August 2007, we paid in full for two boats from VIP Yacht Charters. One in October (44MY) and one in December (59MY).

Once we were on the 44 in October, we realized that the December boat we were taking was going to be too much of a hassle not to have a full crew (we had a seven-month-old grandbaby going). We could either go on and take the 59 (which we had paid in full ($10k), but not take the grandbaby or broker another boat with a full crew to help out.

We talked to the owner (Bob). He said he understood, and we could reschedule for another time. I called in January, and he said just call him closer in. My husband called him, and he said he would “see what he could do”. We then received an email saying after talking to the owner of the boat, they decided they could not let us use our credit but would be happy to give us a 20% discount on our next charter.

First of all, if he would have told us we would have lost our money, we would have changed the trip plans and left the baby at home on this trip. I think it was all just a plan for him to keep our 10k! Yes, the contract indicated it was non-refundable. However, when you have a discussion with the owner and he says everything is fine… you take it for face value.

We charter on average six to eight weeks a year in the VIs - everything from 44ft bareboats to megayachts and have never been lied to like this. In my opinion, they are dishonest. If you value your money, don't use them!

Bunker Hill Hotel, St. Thomas, USVI traveler review

This was a great place for a great price. Visited: November 2007
Posted by t_richards
My boyfriend and I visited The Bunker Hill Inn November of 2007, and had a fantastic time. We stayed in a large suite, with a mini refrigerator; a stand-up shower that was cleaned daily; an AC; TV; a bed that seemed larger than king sized; and a balcony overlooking the downtown area.

The staff was polite, hospitable and courteous.

We enjoyed the complimentary breakfast. My boyfriend and I are vegetarians, and were unable to eat the sausages and other meats served, though. We purchased our own vegetarian products from a local market, and asked the cook to prepare them for us. They had no problem fulfilling our request. As thanks, we left a tip every morning.

The only thing that was a negative, was that they did not have an elevator. So, if you have a heavy load, or hate climbing stairs, you'll have to select another hotel. We used the stairs as our daily exercise.

I loved the hotel because it was affordable, and near the shopping areas and restaurants.

When you come here, you have to try the lobster at Green House. It was delicious! My boyfriend ate so much I thought he would turn into a lobster. Enjoy!

The Morning Star is a sure bet. Visited: October 2008

We were here for seven nights. He had a great view from our room (5336). We also had privacy, and the room was clean.

Most every staff member here was friendly. Karl, the manager, was great! Coco Joe's had good food, but I don't think they care if you starve to death before they serve you.

Frenchman's Reef is in no way as nice as Morning Star. I went there for one night for hurricane evacuation. I encountered rude management. Also, the first floor smelled of mold.

A couple buildings were being jack hammered so that they could tear out a section of one side of the wall at a time and work around the entire building to re-pour concrete in. I was told it was to fix cracks caused by 30 years of earthquakes.

That would never fly in the states, and I pray for future occupants when the upper and lower seams of

The newly poured concrete seperates from the original walls. FYI what grade of concrete do you think they have on the islands? I would think definitely not enough (strength/ lbs per square inch) to support many stories above it.

Two of the pools have jack hammered holes in them, and are closed for construction.

WiFi is only at the lobby, and we couldn't pay to get it in the room.

The front desk and management were very rude, and did not seem to be interested in being friendly or happy. Forget asking about WiFi, fixing the cable that went down every other hour, or other stuff because they just seemed to want to check you in and take your money.

The activities girl, Kim, and the people at the bar were amazingly refreshing and a highlight of the resort.

We stayed for a week with a family group of 26. The hotel was dirty, disorganized and boring.

The food was ridiculously expensive, $11 for a plain waffle.

The staff was rude and unfriendly to us. They seemed to pretend they could not hear us when we asked for something, like perhaps a refill on coffee (which was $3 a cup - and not even good!).

The only positive thing was the beach, it was beautiful.

Transportation into town was also very expensive, and everyone seemed to want only one thing - tips and your money. I don't think they would have blinked if we would have dropped dead.

I'm sorry to be such a downer, but once you have been to Hawaii and know what quality is, St. Thomas and the Marriott stinks.

Sand Dollar Estate, St. Thomas, USVI traveler review

This is an ultra lux St. Thomas villa rental with a private beach. Visited: May 2008
Posted by susie2000
My best girlfriend got married in May 2008 and I had offered to do the preliminary travel research to help find a romantic wedding and honeymoon location. She wanted to have a beach wedding and honeymoon in the Caribbean, and she finally (after weeks of research) decided on renting a private luxury villa called Sand Dollar Estate.

Sand Dollar is the only private St. Thomas villa rental that has its own private beach.

The villa arranged everything - including the reception at the villa and the wedding party accommodation. The villa was huge, and 22 people stayed there in much nicer settings than any hotel. I was one of the lucky guests staying at the villa for the wedding and reception, and it turned out to be the most fabulous setting ever.

My girlfriend and her new husband, stayed in the villa's honeymoon cottage which was a separate adorable building close to the villa's private sandy beach. I've seen so many weddings at resorts like Sandals and other places where it just seemed so public and unromantic because of other vacationers in the bathing suits or shorts strolling by during the ceremony and wedding party photos. My friend's wedding took place on the villa's private white sand beach, and there were no "uninvited" guests or spectators.

I highly recommend it.

Bolongo Bay Beach Resort, St. Thomas, USVI traveler review

It was just not up to par. Visited: September 2008

We stayed for a week, thought we could have stayed somewhere nicer. We went in the off season, and still paid about $1,100 for the week (and that was not all inclusive).

They say it is "beachfront", but there was not much of a beach. The water there was full of seaweed and pebbles.

The restaurants on site were average at best. Iggies was average bar food with a Caribbean flair. The calamari was tasty, but not well prepared, and the hamburger wasn't prepared correctly. The Lobster Grill was overpriced, and the service was exceptionally slow.

Be prepared to take a taxi everywhere and pay a minimum of $8.00 per person per way.

The rooms had an older-feel, and did have a "staunchy" odor to them. The bathrooms were barely large enough for one person - much less two. Also, the shower was so small - and we never had hot water. In addition, the bugs were horrible...bring bug spray.

Okay, first I am really not that picky. I would crash here again if I had to. However, the lady at the desk acted like we showed up a whole day early when we arrived at 2 pm rather then 3 pm.

We stowed our stuff and hit the beach. The lounge chairs where locked up, and we felt like thieves or something trying to convince the guy with the key that we were guests.

The beach was right there and the water was great. The room was musty, and it needed a coat of paint. We didn't stay in it except to sleep, so that was okay.

We ate at the hotel next door, Best Western. Also, we had drinks at their bar. It was such a better atmosphere, and super friendly. We wish we would have checked that one out more.

If you don't have high expections and just need a one nighter, you can't beat the convience to the airport. There was nothing here really horrible for a 24-hour stay, but I sure would not spend my whole vacation here.

Buddy and Sue, the managers, were efficient, friendly and very accommodating in helping us choose local restaurants, summon taxis, etc.

There were six of us staying in three different rooms. We all appreciated the security of the coded-front entry, and then the locks on the individual room doors (as other reviewers have remarked).

Housekeeping was not a problem for us. The room decor was cheery, and the rooms were spacious. Because there were smokers in our group, all could enjoy the smoke-free rooms, but still enjoy sitting together on the outside patio connecting the buildings.

We will definitely recommend the Green Iguana, and we also hope for return visits here ourselves. All of us considered the G.I. to be a lovely secret, and one we're so glad to have happened upon.

Thanks to our hosts, Buddy and Sue, who never wearied of our silly tourist questiions!

I must admit that when we first arrived, things did look a little shaky. However, to my hubby's and my amazement, it was the perfect place for a couple to spend special time together.

The restaurants and shopping were all in good walking distance. Everything was nice and clean. The crew who worked here, Doug and Cindy, were awesome.

So what that we did not have the luxury of a large headboard in the bedroom, or a washing machine and dryer on the premises! Nor, did we have a cute little gym that many people pay for but never use.

What we did have was a whole week of nothing but the best service from the owners. We had clean sheets and towels upon request. Also, we saved a lot of money by walking to Frenchtown and Charlotte Amalie because of the pricy taxi rides.

We love Havana Blue!

We discovered Havana Blue during our first visit to St. Thomas in 2005, and absolutely loved it. My husband, my teen son and I each had the lobster - pricy, but absolutely delicious.

The view of the water is stunning, with an occasional cruise ship passing by.

On our last visit, I discovered their blueberry and vanilla martini. We will be returning there in a few weeks, as this is now a regular stop for us.

It was beyond what we expected for this quiet island off of St. Thomas.

The staff was very accommodating, and the eco-friendly cabins and bathouse were very clean and comfortable. We enjoyed great views, and had plenty of time for quiet and a quick trip for night life.

We will be back.
