I stayed at the Westin St John for my honeymoon in May of 2008. Overall, it was a good experience, but the hotel is nowhere near your normal Westin or resort standards. I stayed in a traditional room facing the beach and the pool. If you are staying in a traditional room, I would recommend the 120s. Bed was comfortable. Carpet was stained . Showers was mediocre at best.
Hotel rooms are in significant need of an upgrade. It is likely staying in a bad holiday inn with upgraded fixtures. The food is incredibly expensive and the food on the resort is less than spectacular. Chloe and Bernard's is 2 star restaurant with 5 star prices. I would recommend heading into town for meals. We really enjoyed Paradiso.
The Westin in pool is one of the nicest I have been to. The pool bar is over priced and makes weak drinks. |

Time Out, St. John, USVI traveler review
Just what we needed Visited: June 2008 |

The villa was private yet conveniently located. It was very comfortable and just about everything we could need was there: sunscreen, toiletries, and plenty of snacks and drinks to get us through the first evening and the next morning. The bedrooms each have their own bath and are located on opposite ends of the villa which is a nice layout if you have more than two people. The washer and dryer were really nice quality and worked great. We especially enjoyed having our own little pool with a beautiful view. |

Okay, let me start off by saying trust no one here, they will rob you blind which is judging by the cabbie who charged is $100.00 for a $42.00 cab ride. I'm ranking the resort, for lack of a better word, a 1 star because the rooms are only okay, the service except for a few staff is horrible. If I could recommend you to run for the hills before staying at this place, I would. There are far to many places that are better, offer more and cost less than this place. Let's face it it I would rather stay at a prison in Abu Grab than this place. The maids didn't change the sheets for the entire 5 days I've been staying here, I know I'm a clear person but come on. The towels were re-used, gross. Then there comes the locals who frequent the bars in this resort who think the US residents are the worst. This old lady who writes for a local paper must be the worst. I don't recommend putting people to pasture but that old lady has it coming from both directions. I don't' recommend this resort to anyone short of a mental breakdown and someone who needs to get away from it all. There are other locations to stay at, local bar, local jail that have more life and hospitality than this place. Good Luck to anyone who ventures into this seeded place in the wall. Mark my words, you will be saying "that guy from Chicago was right, this place is a dump"...... |

My husband and I spent 10 wonderful days on St.Thomas and staying at the Green Iguana just made the trip more enjoyable. This place is like a peaceful oasis. The courtyard is magnificantly "over-run" with all kinds of plants and trees and flowers. It is relaxing just to sit and listen to the " critters". Sue and Bud are like family members that go out of their way to make you comfortable. We highly recommend this lovely place and hope to get back there to enjoy more of the island atmosphere. |

Casa Azure Villa, St. Thomas, USVI traveler review
Great place Visited: February 2008 |

We loved Casa Azure - beautiful views, great location, convenient to beaches and ferry to St. John. The one thing I would say is to know that it is really a 2 bedroom house with a separate one bedroom apartment (which was a little dingy). The 2 bedrooms upstairs were great though! |

Wanted to add this in:
It can be hard for taxi drivers to find the Inn Love. We had one group lost for 30 minutes. We found an awesome taxi driver though who hooked us up for the whole week. He was personable and reliable, getting us to the 6am ferry on SUNDAY morning! Call Mitch at (340)690-6507. He definitely knows where the Inn Love is located! |

We had intended to stay in one of the more fancy villas, but waited too long and ran out of options. This villa was very good for a large group of ten people. The whole theme reminded me of place one would stay on an African safari. The big wooden planks throughout were great. The only common spaces were the outdoor patio area and the outdoor kitchen dining area. None of the common space were air conditioned, but the bedrooms all were.
The management company was very reponsive to some of the minor issues we had. However, none of the three bedrooms in the guest house had water the first day we were here. The two main bedrooms were nicer than the three rooms in the guest house.
The view was great. The location was fairly close to the Westin. The two washers and dryers were convenient, too.
The pictures online did not do the place justice. It was a good value for the cost.
As a side note, it can be hard for taxi drivers to find the Inn Love. We had one group lost for 30 minutes. We found an awesome taxi driver, though, who hooked us up for the whole week. He was personable and reliable, getting us to the 6:00 am ferry on Sunday morning! Call Mitch at 340 690 6507. He definitely knows where the Inn Love is located!

Cottages by the Sea is beautiful, quiet, and friendly. Visited: May 2008 |

My wife and I stayed here for six days, and wanted to stay forever.
Our first three days we simply stayed at cottages, and ate our meals next door at the fabulous restaurant. The final three days we rented a car and enjoyed the rest of the island.
The only place better to snorkel is Buck Island, and nowhere else on the island did we find a more pleasant, laid back atmosphere. That is quite a statement since everywhere we went, the people were on "island time".
Paul was a wonderful host who bent over backwards to take of everything we could have possibly needed.
If you want a peaceful, beautiful, non-commercialized get away, this is the place for you (and us!). |

I have stayed here for six years in a row. The service, cleanliness, store, and restaurant have diminished in quality - despite their new promise to upgrade.
In fact, we found the quality so far gone that for virtually the same dollars, we have rented a house on Ambergris Cay for '09. Hot showers, kitchen, AC, all that jazz for only $1500.
At Cinnamon Bay, the staff was slow, the prices in the store were outlandish, and the restaurant ran out of food or missed our order. The salad bar was a joke.
Also, the bathrooms are getting cleaned less frequently. Sometimes raw sewage would run out of the manholes for days. Utensils were missing from the cabin, the gas grill wouldn't work, and the charcoal grill was falling over. Come on guys, for $120 a night - at least keep stuff working!
Cinnamon Bay is managed by a private company. Too bad, my parents did better with their campground for 30 years. I love St. John and the USVI, but Belize, here I come. I will miss the donkeys and deer. |

We stayed here 30 years ago for our honeymoon when the hotel had wood rooms. Thirty years later, we've seen a lot of improvements.
The breakfast was excellent, and we felt the atmosphere we would feel at home
Its location was perfect for exploring the rest of the island. Martha and Sandy were very helpful in giving us tips as to what to do and see.
In addition, the rooms were simple, but very clean. The pool was very clean and nice, and the restaurant next door was pricey - but great.
This was a quiet, low key and relaxing place to stay in the heart of the old city. It was minutes from museums, restaurants, and shops.
Molly and Cheryl created an almost-home atmosphere. |

First of all, it was very difficult to find. We drove by the road three times, but that was no big deal.
The "suite" (and I use that term loosely) was filthy, and smelled like cat urine. Also, the AC was not on and/or not working. The smell was atrocious, and since we booked through Travelocity (big mistake), it was extremetly difficult to change our reservation without losing all our money.
The rate of $295 a night was outrageous for what we were getting. We drove throught he Ritz Carlton, and wished we would have booked there - or at any "name" hotel.
This was a disaster - trust me. It reminded me of an old Caribbean rental unit by the beach. Sure, the view was great, but our sheets were dirty and old, and the water was yellow - and so on and so on.
They rate this a three-star, but it was way below that. I read the reviews mentioning it was "charming" and "Why are people complaining, it is the Caribbean?". I have stayed on a lot of islands, and hotels are not anything like this.
I will say that the manager was very helpful after we complained, and accommodated us with a different room that was better. Unfortunately, the damage was done.
If you want a great vacation, stay elsewhere.

We had a perfect week at Wyndham Sugar Bay. The room was clean, and had a perfect view of the ocean and St. John.
The food was good, and we had absolutely no problems with any of the staff. We are thinking of going back next May. |

This hotel is a very smart choice. Visited: May 2008 |

My wife, stepdaughter and I enjoyed our 14-night stay at this hotel. I won't go overboard and say it's the best hotel in the world, even though I feel compelled.
What I will say is that all descriptions in my travel guides were on target. This hotel was very clean, and all around nice. We rented an efficiency (A-4). It helped having all cooking and eating utensils we needed. Also, the harbor view from our balcony was very beautiful.
If someone wants an affordable hotel with good security, this hotel is a very "smart" choice.
After visiting to St. Thomas, I'd not want a hotel downtown. This hotel's location on top of Blackbird's Hill was a better choice (safer, and more pretty). The walk downtown via 99 steps was very quick and easy.
The main reason someone should want to stay there is that both managers, Sue and Buddy, were every bit as friendly, warm and helpful as reported in the guides. We especially liked how they loaned us a cooler for use to go on picnics at the most beautiful beaches in the world.
My wife and stepdaughter loved the fact the managers gave them fresh bananas right off of the tree in their front yard. They were delicious.
Staying at the Green Iguana hotel was a very good choice. |

I arrived to St. Martin a day early, and just needed a place to crash prior to our week at the Marriott. Upon arrival, I asked a local police officer where was a good place to crash for the night where I could get value for my money. He suggested the Beachcomber Hotel, which was walking distance from the airport (about a half a mile).
Having no reservations (and no idea what to expect of discount hotel), I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. The staff was pleasant, the rooms were clean, the food at the restaurant was good, and the beach was very nice. My check out was at 11:00. However, there was no pressure for us to leave our room, so we stayed for a bit and hung out at the bar and had some appetizers.
I am rating the Beachcomber a "five" - not in comparison to the Marriott or the Ritz Carlton, but for the overall value for your money. St. Thomas is pretty pricy on tourists, and to spend only $150.00 (with tax) on a clean, beachfront room without a reservation is great. |

We travel to St. John every year. My family and I stay in a villa, and have enjoyed it very much. We visit four to five different beaches, and all are great. We also rent a car and see the island.
Now, is everything perfect? No. However, when you have the volume of visitors to the resort and the island - some care about the resort and beaches, and others abuse it.
As for those who claim it's expensive - remember, it's an island. Everything has to be shipped in. If you want "cheap", use your vacation time close to home and go to a Holiday Inn Express. |

Full Moon Beach Bar and Cottages was awesome! After traveling the USVI and BVI over the past 18 years, this was a place where I felt at home.
I really didn't know what to expect, but what I found was this: a food special every night, from all you can eat crab legs to all you can eat shrimp.
They also had a white sandy beach with true locals - and not the tourist trap type location.
The cottage was not brand new by any means. However, it was clean, slept four comfortably, had super hot water, and was within walking distance to restaurants, bars and the beach.
Because the place was small, the owner asked that guests conserve water - but use what you need. Linens were changed out every three days - versus every day - which I don't mind at all. More people should attempt to not waste water on a island.
In addition, the new onsite owner was full of information about places to go and things to do. That would be great if you want to cruise the island, but I just wanted a place to kick back without having to think too much.
The unique cottage was renovated from old ruins of a sugar plantation that dates back some 150 years - if not older. I highly recommend this cottage for the person or couple who enjoys really relaxing while having great food, good diving and a killer beach within a minutes walk. |

Paradise was found at Gallows Point. Visited: April 2008 |
| Posted by liblady |
 |
Gallows Point was a gorgeous spot. The condos were close enough to walk to town and restaurants, but was mostly quiet.
That said, there was some renovation going on in a neighboring unit that woke us up.
We rented a car - you need it to get to the beaches. But parking was scarce, especially in the resort lot. The web site indicates they discourage small children, but there were some noisy kids in the pool at times.
We liked being able to fix a pot of coffee and some toast in the morning, and the condo had both a cooler and beach chairs, so we loved being able to fix a picnic and go to the beach.
The rum was cheap - and Cruzan single barrel estate rum was a favorite with us. I don't know if we can get it in the states.
St. John was far less populated and less crowded than St. Thomas, so we were glad we were based on St. John. Views from the patios and balconies were worth the price of admission! |
