Margarita Phil's , St. John, USVI traveler review

It was poor. Visited: November 1999
Posted by rumrunner
Yes, Margarita Phill's has a great drink menu, and the food looks like it would be fantastic. The problem is that it is outrageously noisy, and your order will take 40 minutes to get to you.

I have eaten here four times in the last five years. Every time I have, the service, noise and wait time was awful.

Don't waste your time. I would give it one star, but it is clean.

Zozo's Ristorante, St. John, USVI traveler review

This is the best restaurant on island! Visited: November 1999
Posted by rumrunner
Zozo's has, by far, the best menu, atmosphere and service of all of St. John's restaurants. It is not on the low end for price, but you get what you pay for at Zozo's.

The calamari is incredible.

Make sure to get reservations for sunset. The attire for men would be pants and any collared shirt.

We love Roma! Visited: November 1999

From the great Italian cuisine to the freindly owners and staff; Roma is one of my family's favorites. We almost always eat here the first and last night of our trip.

This place is a no-brainer when it comes to great food and a comfortable atmosphere.

Tango Mare Villa, St. John, USVI traveler review

We were at home in Paradise! Visited: June 2007
Posted by rumrunner
We have visited St. John for many years, and stayed in both hotels and villas. Tango Mare is, by far, the most comfortable and unique experience we have had in the Caribbean.

We had a chance encounter with the Tango Kids (adult children of the owners) at one of the local watering holes, and snuck a peak at the property one of the last days of our trip. It put our villa to shame. The following year, we booked at Tango and it was one of the best vacations of my life.

It is difficult to single out any one amenity that made this villa feel like home. They had a gourmet kitchen, beautiful pool, spacious suites, outdoor showers (loved them), and great atmosphere night and day. In the end, we felt like we owned this beatiful home for the week we stayed here!

Every time I stay at Tango, I get the feeling the owners have poured their souls into this paradise. Check out the guestbook while you are here, and you will wonder why some of the guests did not give up their lives back home and stay.

The only reticence I feel giving this reveiw is that if you book this property, I may not get it the two weeks I want it this year! Enjoy!

Seacove Villa, St. John, USVI traveler review

This was great for a family group. Visited: April 2008
Posted by epof
We had a wonderful time at Seacove. The home had everything we needed, except our own DVDs. The computer was a little slow, but it got the job done.

If you have small children, the open pool is something to be aware of, but you can close it off. Also, bring bug spray and sunscreen.

We would definitely come back.

This is our second trip to St. John and Cinnamon Bay. We shared this beautiful house with my sister's family. We had a fantastic time!

The house was more beautiful than the pictures showed. I highly recommend this house to anyone who desires the top accommodations and immediate access to a private beach.

Esprit Villa, St. John, USVI traveler review

This is a great villa getaway with porches, mountain views, and island breezes. Visited: March 2008
Posted by bella___smom
Our St. John vacation was a wonderful experience due largely to the homey Victorian style, mountainside villa we stayed in ~ Esprit.

Its three full porches, one with views of their lush colorful gardens and two with breathtaking views of mountains and aqua bays with sailboats, made it special.

It was well appointed and comfortable with everything one would need--from games, books, movies to comfy beds and a nice kitchen.

In addition, it's conveniently located only a few minutes from a number of beautiful beaches. We absolutely loved it and can't wait to come back!

Sea Forever Villa, St. John, USVI traveler review

This is a great place! Visited: July 2007
Posted by barbnapo83
I stayed at the Sea Forever in July 2007 with my husband and three teenagers (two were 18, and one was 13). We had a great time.

The villa was clean, and close to the Westin which was good since we had other family staying there. It was a little high up on the hill, but the view was well worth it.

The only problems we had were that the gas to cook ran out, but they were there the next morning to fix it. Another problem was the mosquitos loved me a little too much.

However, we are going back again in August 2008.

Caneel Bay, A Rosewood Resort, St. John, USVI traveler review

Ground transportation was the most pleasant part of our Caneel Bay experience. Visited: March 2008
Posted by daviahelmer
We just returned from a four-day stay at Caneel Bay.

Unfortunately, the most pleasant part of the whole experience was the ground transportation from the airport in St. Thomas to the private ferry which took us to St. John.

We were greeted at the airport by a friendly and helpful representative of the Caneel Bay airport staff, and introduced to an extremely professional taxi driver who had a great personality.

During our ride to the ferry, he actually conducted a mini-tour along our route to the ferry. Once we arrived at the hotel, the experience went down hill.

The front desk staff was not what I would say was extremely cordial. We had been assured that our room would be located at a certain part of the property, and this request was not honored.

also, our room had not been adequately cleaned, and the furnishings were dated.

The meals at the restaurant facilities were certainly not commensurate with their costs. It appeared to me that upper management needs to get their act together.

This is a phenomenal place! Visited: February 2008

Caneel Trailside Cottage was absolutely gorgeous and totally first class. The owners really thought out what you might need on vacation.

The view was great, and each of the identical suites was beautiful. Everything was better than we ever expected.

When we go back to St. John (our favorite island), we plan to stay here again.

Caneel Bay, A Rosewood Resort, St. John, USVI traveler review

We were disappointed! Visited: March 2008
Posted by alyson
We just returned from Caneel Bay, and could not wait
to come home.

The beachfront room was very dated and had bugs. The outside deck truly needed to be cleaned and redone. The charge for this room was way overpriced!

The staff couldn't seem to care less, and trying to get a drink or anything was as if they were doing us a favor.

The beaches were pretty, but if you had a chid who wanted to go into the pool - think again. The water was grey and gross.

This resort needs to be redone. I'm sure in 1970 it was a five-star resort. I would give it two stars. If you like the movie "Dirty Dancing", this is the place for you!

Since there has not been a recent review, I want to let everyone know that all that has been said below (and so much more) is still true about this island paradise.

There are no words to describe how incredible this place is - the location, the grounds, the views, and most of all the people.

I can't imagine any place better to stay.

This is the most spectacular villa I've ever stayed in, and I can't wait to go again next month (March of 2008).

The views are incredible. The home and guest house are exactly as described - with all the comforts of home and a luxery hotel rolled in as one.

Thank you for creating this magnificent place, and allowing others to experience it.

Maho Bay Camps, St. John, USVI traveler review

This is the best place on the islands. Visited: February 2008

I love this place because you aren't stuck in a room with a TV. You are outside enjoying the fabulous Caribbean.

It's not for everyone. If you hate camping, or have serious problems with stairs and communal bathrooms - stay away.

If you love nature, this is the place for you.

Maho Bay Camps, St. John, USVI traveler review

We highly recommend it. Visited: November 1999
Posted by tcsteid
We just returned from our fourth visit to Maho Bay Camps. As always, we loved the place.

The food was great. While some reviewers say it is pricy, if you consider what it takes to get to the camp, we disagree. If you plan on going, understand that it is a camp built on a mountain, so there are lots of steps to climb.

Recently, a bunch of roosters have taken up residence at Maho and begin crowing at 4:00 am every morning. The managament should remove the roosters.

Maho Bay Camps are a special place to my wife, our two kids and me. We highly recommend the place, and plan on returning at some future date.

Harmony Studios, St. John, USVI traveler review

What a view! Visited: November 1999
Posted by rockyisland
My wife and I have been to Maho Bay Camps five times over the past ten years, and have always stayed in the tents. This trip, we decided to move up to Harmony Studios... kind of as a treat to ourselves.

Besides heading to the Caribbean, this was the best decision we made in the entire trip. When we walked through the door of unit 6A, we were blown away by the stunning view looking out high over Maho all the way to St. Thomas. We've stayed at many places in our travels, but none had the majestic beauty we had from our balcony/deck.

I counted 211 stair steps from the Maho Bay Camps cafe to our Harmony studio. It was pretty rough the first couple of days being Mid-west flat landers from Michigan, but we toned up pretty fast. It was at least that many steps again to get down to the beach from the cafe.

While Little Maho Bay beach seems tired and worn, Big Maho Bay beach is the exact opposite with beautiful sand and water to match.

We made nightly visits to the glass blowing studio following dinner, and enjoyed many hours watching the artists apply their trade and fielding questions from the audience. No matter how many times the same question was asked, they always treated it as the they had never heard it before.

St. John and the camp have become our gauge for all other Caribbean places. Some are better, and some are far worse - but at the end of the day, we'll return many more times in the years to come.

Bluff View Villa, St. John, USVI traveler review

We love the lizards! Visited: November 1999
Posted by ilovestjohn
This was our third time on St John, and our first at ChocoCruz (first with our kids).

This house fit our needs perfectly. The kitchen was on the small side, but had everything we would need (I tried to avoid it as much as possible!)

The pool and deck areas were amazing. The best feature had to be the views. It was great for watching the sunset and viewing rainbows.

The iguanas had to be the most surprising attraction. Most days there were at least 10-15 basking in the sun on nearby trees. They were never a problem.

I would definitely recommend this house.

Gallows Point Resort, St. John, USVI traveler review

It is still the best. Visited: April 2007
Posted by starch
We visit St. John every year. We have stayed at Caneel Bay, the Westin, Estate Lindholm, Gallows Point... and others.

Over the past few years, we've settled in at Gallows Point. It's the most convenient to town, has one of the best restaurants, very friendly staff, and nice pool area.

If you have kids who need entertainment or you plan to stay put with few excursions, go to the Westin. If you like day trips, good selection of restaurants without the hassle of parking, it's Gallows Point.

If you want the most of your privacy, Estate Lindholm.

All four resorts have great accommodations. If you downgrade from these four, your vacation will be equally less pleasant. At least that's been our experience.

Caneel Trailside Cottage, St. John, USVI traveler review

Caneel Trailside Cottage will provide the ideal home away from home. Visited: December 2007
Posted by jasonrmclaughlin
If your vacation destination is St. John USVI, Caneel Trailside Cottage will provide the ideal home away from home.

We were welcomed at the ferry and escorted to the house, with a stop to pick up our rental jeep. We reached the house after a short drive from town, and were struck by the luxurious comfort and privacy of the setting.

As we entered the gate to the main patio, it was hard to resist the invitation of the pool. Upon opening the front door to the Caneel Trailside Cottage, we were speechless at the breathtaking view of the ocean – which is enjoyed from every aspect of the house, but best experienced from the back deck.

We stayed over the week of New Year’s Eve, and we were able to see the fireworks from the house! There was a wealth of wildlife to observe: several types of birds including hummingbirds, small lizards, and the occasional chicken.

The spacious living and dining areas were tastefully decorated, yet comfortable. The kitchen was well-appointed and made us want to cook even though we were on vacation.

The bedrooms at Caneel Trailside Cottage were comfortable and allowed a good night’s rest for us to feel refreshed, relaxed, and ready for a fun-filled day of hiking, snorkeling, or just lying on one of the beautiful beaches.

With the windows open, we felt the cool Caribbean breezes, but each bedroom had its own AC unit, if you prefer. Also, the showers were spa-like.

The house was provisioned with everything we could possibly need: linens, beach stuff, kitchen basics, entertainment (books, games, DVD/VCR, stereo), and a basket of snacks (including a bottle of rum!) that lasted us the entire week.

It was also apparent that the owners have made every effort to make the house as “green” as possible. The Caneel Hill Trail was located behind the driveway, and it was worth the short hike to get amazing views of the island and the sunset.

In addition, town was less than five minutes away for the convenience of the food market, restaurants, and shopping.

This was our first visit to St. John, but likely not our last – we have fallen under the spell of this magic island and can’t wait to return. We will definitely being staying at Caneel Trailside Cottage again!
