The Westin St. John Resort & Villas, St. John, USVI traveler review

Not awful, Not great Visited: May 2008
Posted by awhsnow83
I stayed at the Westin St John for my honeymoon in May of 2008. Overall, it was a good experience, but the hotel is nowhere near your normal Westin or resort standards. I stayed in a traditional room facing the beach and the pool. If you are staying in a traditional room, I would recommend the 120s. Bed was comfortable. Carpet was stained . Showers was mediocre at best.

Hotel rooms are in significant need of an upgrade. It is likely staying in a bad holiday inn with upgraded fixtures. The food is incredibly expensive and the food on the resort is less than spectacular. Chloe and Bernard's is 2 star restaurant with 5 star prices. I would recommend heading into town for meals. We really enjoyed Paradiso.

The Westin in pool is one of the nicest I have been to. The pool bar is over priced and makes weak drinks.

Time Out, St. John, USVI traveler review

Just what we needed Visited: June 2008
Posted by julie_pi97
The villa was private yet conveniently located. It was very comfortable and just about everything we could need was there: sunscreen, toiletries, and plenty of snacks and drinks to get us through the first evening and the next morning. The bedrooms each have their own bath and are located on opposite ends of the villa which is a nice layout if you have more than two people. The washer and dryer were really nice quality and worked great. We especially enjoyed having our own little pool with a beautiful view.

Inn Love, St. John, USVI traveler review

The best taxi driver on St John Visited: June 2008
Posted by weddingguest
Wanted to add this in:
It can be hard for taxi drivers to find the Inn Love. We had one group lost for 30 minutes. We found an awesome taxi driver though who hooked us up for the whole week. He was personable and reliable, getting us to the 6am ferry on SUNDAY morning! Call Mitch at (340)690-6507. He definitely knows where the Inn Love is located!

Inn Love, St. John, USVI traveler review

Inn Love offers indoor and outdoor living. Visited: June 2008
Posted by weddingguest
We had intended to stay in one of the more fancy villas, but waited too long and ran out of options. This villa was very good for a large group of ten people. The whole theme reminded me of place one would stay on an African safari. The big wooden planks throughout were great. The only common spaces were the outdoor patio area and the outdoor kitchen dining area. None of the common space were air conditioned, but the bedrooms all were.

The management company was very reponsive to some of the minor issues we had. However, none of the three bedrooms in the guest house had water the first day we were here. The two main bedrooms were nicer than the three rooms in the guest house.

The view was great. The location was fairly close to the Westin. The two washers and dryers were convenient, too.

The pictures online did not do the place justice. It was a good value for the cost.

As a side note, it can be hard for taxi drivers to find the Inn Love. We had one group lost for 30 minutes. We found an awesome taxi driver, though, who hooked us up for the whole week. He was personable and reliable, getting us to the 6:00 am ferry on Sunday morning! Call Mitch at 340 690 6507. He definitely knows where the Inn Love is located!

Cinnamon Bay Campground, St. John, USVI traveler review

It is not as good as it used to be. Visited: March 2008
Posted by cabin10
I have stayed here for six years in a row. The service, cleanliness, store, and restaurant have diminished in quality - despite their new promise to upgrade.

In fact, we found the quality so far gone that for virtually the same dollars, we have rented a house on Ambergris Cay for '09. Hot showers, kitchen, AC, all that jazz for only $1500.

At Cinnamon Bay, the staff was slow, the prices in the store were outlandish, and the restaurant ran out of food or missed our order. The salad bar was a joke.

Also, the bathrooms are getting cleaned less frequently. Sometimes raw sewage would run out of the manholes for days. Utensils were missing from the cabin, the gas grill wouldn't work, and the charcoal grill was falling over. Come on guys, for $120 a night - at least keep stuff working!

Cinnamon Bay is managed by a private company. Too bad, my parents did better with their campground for 30 years. I love St. John and the USVI, but Belize, here I come. I will miss the donkeys and deer.

The Westin St. John Resort & Villas, St. John, USVI traveler review

We had a perfect stay. Visited: May 2008
Posted by lesm
We travel to St. John every year. My family and I stay in a villa, and have enjoyed it very much. We visit four to five different beaches, and all are great. We also rent a car and see the island.

Now, is everything perfect? No. However, when you have the volume of visitors to the resort and the island - some care about the resort and beaches, and others abuse it.

As for those who claim it's expensive - remember, it's an island. Everything has to be shipped in. If you want "cheap", use your vacation time close to home and go to a Holiday Inn Express.

Gallows Point Resort, St. John, USVI traveler review

Paradise was found at Gallows Point. Visited: April 2008
Posted by liblady
Gallows Point was a gorgeous spot. The condos were close enough to walk to town and restaurants, but was mostly quiet.

That said, there was some renovation going on in a neighboring unit that woke us up.

We rented a car - you need it to get to the beaches. But parking was scarce, especially in the resort lot. The web site indicates they discourage small children, but there were some noisy kids in the pool at times.

We liked being able to fix a pot of coffee and some toast in the morning, and the condo had both a cooler and beach chairs, so we loved being able to fix a picnic and go to the beach.

The rum was cheap - and Cruzan single barrel estate rum was a favorite with us. I don't know if we can get it in the states.

St. John was far less populated and less crowded than St. Thomas, so we were glad we were based on St. John. Views from the patios and balconies were worth the price of admission!

Lavender Hill Suites, St. John, USVI traveler review

It was like staying on Jackhammer Hill. Visited: May 2008
Posted by beachbumz
We stayed at Lavender Hill May 10-17th of 2008. The location was ideal - the view beautiful, and the room was clean and functional.

Although our stay was pleasant, it could have been better. The Grand Bay construction was right next door - about ten feet from Lavender Hill's East side building.

During our week, the construction ran Monday - Saturday from 8 am - 6 pm. They were using a four-ton jackhammer (for ten hours a day) to put in the foundation footings. The room shook, and the noise was intolerable. We were advised by management via email (a week after final payment was made) that 'construction' was taking place, and that they could be heard 'clanking around' - but that work began around 8:30 am and ended by 3:30 pm - well...it didn't.

Our intention of cooking in and enjoying a few quiet dinners and breakfasts were lost - we couldn't stand the noise. Other guests felt the same. Unfortunately, we rented a condo and spent no time other than our sleeping hours in it.

Speaking of sleeping, Unit 7E was in desperate need of a new mattress...neither of us got a decent night on that lumpy old bed.

Until construction is done, you're better off staying as far from Grand Bay as possible.

Tango Mare Villa, St. John, USVI traveler review

We were at home in Paradise! Visited: June 2007
Posted by rumrunner
We have visited St. John for many years, and stayed in both hotels and villas. Tango Mare is, by far, the most comfortable and unique experience we have had in the Caribbean.

We had a chance encounter with the Tango Kids (adult children of the owners) at one of the local watering holes, and snuck a peak at the property one of the last days of our trip. It put our villa to shame. The following year, we booked at Tango and it was one of the best vacations of my life.

It is difficult to single out any one amenity that made this villa feel like home. They had a gourmet kitchen, beautiful pool, spacious suites, outdoor showers (loved them), and great atmosphere night and day. In the end, we felt like we owned this beatiful home for the week we stayed here!

Every time I stay at Tango, I get the feeling the owners have poured their souls into this paradise. Check out the guestbook while you are here, and you will wonder why some of the guests did not give up their lives back home and stay.

The only reticence I feel giving this reveiw is that if you book this property, I may not get it the two weeks I want it this year! Enjoy!

Seacove Villa, St. John, USVI traveler review

This was great for a family group. Visited: April 2008
Posted by epof
We had a wonderful time at Seacove. The home had everything we needed, except our own DVDs. The computer was a little slow, but it got the job done.

If you have small children, the open pool is something to be aware of, but you can close it off. Also, bring bug spray and sunscreen.

We would definitely come back.

This is our second trip to St. John and Cinnamon Bay. We shared this beautiful house with my sister's family. We had a fantastic time!

The house was more beautiful than the pictures showed. I highly recommend this house to anyone who desires the top accommodations and immediate access to a private beach.

Esprit Villa, St. John, USVI traveler review

This is a great villa getaway with porches, mountain views, and island breezes. Visited: March 2008
Posted by bella___smom
Our St. John vacation was a wonderful experience due largely to the homey Victorian style, mountainside villa we stayed in ~ Esprit.

Its three full porches, one with views of their lush colorful gardens and two with breathtaking views of mountains and aqua bays with sailboats, made it special.

It was well appointed and comfortable with everything one would need--from games, books, movies to comfy beds and a nice kitchen.

In addition, it's conveniently located only a few minutes from a number of beautiful beaches. We absolutely loved it and can't wait to come back!

Sea Forever Villa, St. John, USVI traveler review

This is a great place! Visited: July 2007
Posted by barbnapo83
I stayed at the Sea Forever in July 2007 with my husband and three teenagers (two were 18, and one was 13). We had a great time.

The villa was clean, and close to the Westin which was good since we had other family staying there. It was a little high up on the hill, but the view was well worth it.

The only problems we had were that the gas to cook ran out, but they were there the next morning to fix it. Another problem was the mosquitos loved me a little too much.

However, we are going back again in August 2008.

Caneel Bay, A Rosewood Resort, St. John, USVI traveler review

Ground transportation was the most pleasant part of our Caneel Bay experience. Visited: March 2008
Posted by daviahelmer
We just returned from a four-day stay at Caneel Bay.

Unfortunately, the most pleasant part of the whole experience was the ground transportation from the airport in St. Thomas to the private ferry which took us to St. John.

We were greeted at the airport by a friendly and helpful representative of the Caneel Bay airport staff, and introduced to an extremely professional taxi driver who had a great personality.

During our ride to the ferry, he actually conducted a mini-tour along our route to the ferry. Once we arrived at the hotel, the experience went down hill.

The front desk staff was not what I would say was extremely cordial. We had been assured that our room would be located at a certain part of the property, and this request was not honored.

also, our room had not been adequately cleaned, and the furnishings were dated.

The meals at the restaurant facilities were certainly not commensurate with their costs. It appeared to me that upper management needs to get their act together.

Caneel Trailside Cottage, St. John, USVI traveler review

This is a phenomenal place! Visited: February 2008

Caneel Trailside Cottage was absolutely gorgeous and totally first class. The owners really thought out what you might need on vacation.

The view was great, and each of the identical suites was beautiful. Everything was better than we ever expected.

When we go back to St. John (our favorite island), we plan to stay here again.

Caneel Bay, A Rosewood Resort, St. John, USVI traveler review

We were disappointed! Visited: March 2008
Posted by alyson
We just returned from Caneel Bay, and could not wait
to come home.

The beachfront room was very dated and had bugs. The outside deck truly needed to be cleaned and redone. The charge for this room was way overpriced!

The staff couldn't seem to care less, and trying to get a drink or anything was as if they were doing us a favor.

The beaches were pretty, but if you had a chid who wanted to go into the pool - think again. The water was grey and gross.

This resort needs to be redone. I'm sure in 1970 it was a five-star resort. I would give it two stars. If you like the movie "Dirty Dancing", this is the place for you!

Since there has not been a recent review, I want to let everyone know that all that has been said below (and so much more) is still true about this island paradise.

There are no words to describe how incredible this place is - the location, the grounds, the views, and most of all the people.

I can't imagine any place better to stay.

This is the most spectacular villa I've ever stayed in, and I can't wait to go again next month (March of 2008).

The views are incredible. The home and guest house are exactly as described - with all the comforts of home and a luxery hotel rolled in as one.

Thank you for creating this magnificent place, and allowing others to experience it.
