Cottages by the Sea, St. Croix, USVI traveler review

Cottages by the Sea is beautiful, quiet, and friendly. Visited: May 2008
Posted by lanceandrebecca
My wife and I stayed here for six days, and wanted to stay forever.

Our first three days we simply stayed at cottages, and ate our meals next door at the fabulous restaurant. The final three days we rented a car and enjoyed the rest of the island.

The only place better to snorkel is Buck Island, and nowhere else on the island did we find a more pleasant, laid back atmosphere. That is quite a statement since everywhere we went, the people were on "island time".

Paul was a wonderful host who bent over backwards to take of everything we could have possibly needed.

If you want a peaceful, beautiful, non-commercialized get away, this is the place for you (and us!).

Full Moon Beach Bar and Cottages, St. Croix, USVI traveler review

It's not new, but it is awesome. Visited: February 2008
Posted by caribbeancruiser
Full Moon Beach Bar and Cottages was awesome! After traveling the USVI and BVI over the past 18 years, this was a place where I felt at home.

I really didn't know what to expect, but what I found was this: a food special every night, from all you can eat crab legs to all you can eat shrimp.

They also had a white sandy beach with true locals - and not the tourist trap type location.

The cottage was not brand new by any means. However, it was clean, slept four comfortably, had super hot water, and was within walking distance to restaurants, bars and the beach.

Because the place was small, the owner asked that guests conserve water - but use what you need. Linens were changed out every three days - versus every day - which I don't mind at all. More people should attempt to not waste water on a island.

In addition, the new onsite owner was full of information about places to go and things to do. That would be great if you want to cruise the island, but I just wanted a place to kick back without having to think too much.

The unique cottage was renovated from old ruins of a sugar plantation that dates back some 150 years - if not older. I highly recommend this cottage for the person or couple who enjoys really relaxing while having great food, good diving and a killer beach within a minutes walk.

We live in Minnesota where it is 89 deegrees colder than at Cottages. What a wonderful place to stay.

The staff was so friendly, and the place was clean and fresh. We loved the "regulars" too!

Waves at Cane Bay, The, St. Croix, USVI traveler review

We were very satisfied with our stay. Visited: February 2008
Posted by alandtorrie
We stayed a bit over two weeks, and loved this place.

Our room was large and clean, and the bed was very comfortable. We also had a gorgeous view, and the maid service came three times a week - what's not to love?

We had a full size fridge, a small oven and four-burner stove, a microwave, and a coffee pot. It was located between other beach bars we could easily walk to.

Our only regret was we left just before the grand re-opening of the restaurant. A lot of time and money must have been invested in preparation for the big event. They hired a chef with a great reputation, and we will definitely head there once back in St. Croix.

I would recommend Waves at Cane Bay as a great place to stay.

Get the suite or don't go. Visited: February 2008
Posted by imbackfor
They have a great restaurant, nice staff, and a fantastic location on the beach. It's a fair price for the suite, but not the other rooms.

Yea-boo: New help pushed us into two different rooms, and then we asked for the only suite and got it. The other rooms were poorly maintained, and the suite was just okay.

Yes, it's the islands, but clean and well-maintained are pretty easy criteria to meet.

Sand Castle On The Beach Resort, St. Croix, USVI traveler review

This was a peaceful escape with the best beaches. Visited: November 1999
Posted by levos
This was probably the most relaxed vacation I have ever had. I was looking for a destination to vacation alone and chill-out. I found it at the Sandcastle.

I wanted to get away and mellow out and found myself making friends with many of the other guests. The property’s proprietors and their wonderful staff were always accommodating and made me feel at home. They were very “service-oriented”.

My room was clean, and the housekeeping was excellent. The property had two well-kept pools.

My room was equipped with a full kitchen, but I still I ate one lunch and one dinner at the restaurant and the meals were delicious. Every morning I walked about fifty steps to the restaurant for my coffee and sat facing the ocean.

The hotel beach was superb, and there was very nice snorkeling there as well.

I do recommend renting a car to see the island and the Buck Island National Park tour. I also recommend finding your way to Sandy Point Beach whith is a ten-minute drive or long walk from the hotel.

If you like seclusion, sand, and waves - this beach is the best!

Club Comanche Hotel, St. Croix, USVI traveler review

We found it to be a disgusting, terrible, run down hotel in February 2006. Visited: November 1999
Posted by islandvisitor
This was the first time we stayed at this hotel, and I must honestly admit that this was the worst place my family and I have ever stayed.

Upon arrival, the door was broken (as well as the toilet). The sheets and the bedding were dirty, soiled, and there were no towels or floor mats in the bathroom. There was a plumber working on the toilet, and there was one (used) bar of soap left in the bathroom for our use!

Outside of the owner, there were no hotel staff to speak of. Immediately upon arrival, we made the decision to check out. After calling around the island and finding no vacancy, we decided to make the best of the room.

Because we were already on the island with no room, we decided to clean up the room ourselves before occupany. We went to the local K-Mart and bought cleaning supplies and sheets in order to make the room hospitable.

Once the owner realized what we had done, she made the decision to give us a 50% discount on the entire stay.

In summary: this was a verry traumatic experience for my wife, and my family has developed a deep fear of hotel stays on the island.

The best day of our vacation was check out day. We would never recommend Club Comanche to anyone in the world.

This is a great deal if you're looking for a room and a place to have breakfast, lunch and dinner. With the pool and the four-star resturant, you don't need to go anywhere else.

Colony Cove, St. Croix, USVI traveler review

It's better than a box room any day! Visited: November 1999

Watch out for the huge service charge - $300 extra to the bill for ten days.

It was nice to have an actual apartment with a kitchen. As everything shut down early here, we had to be self sufficient.

I am in a hotel right now, a big name one. It costs double, and it is just a room with a bed. So, overall, Colony Cove was a good deal.

It was not a new building, and the pictures might fool you. It resembled an apartment complex in the states with a couple decades on it.

The beach was not too good right behind Colony Cove. However, all the beaches were open access, so all I had to do was walk down a little. The hotels were all connected.

If you need to be on the Internet, bring your own air-card, it was unreliable here.

We have been traveling to St. Croix for ten years now, and we think Colony Cove is the the best place to stay.

They have great rooms with two beds, two baths and a full kitchen. Also, it is close to town, diving, and shopping. The beach and pool are great, too.

Just sit back, relax, and go diving!

Chenay Bay Beach Resort, St. Croix, USVI traveler review

It was very relaxing and intimate. Visited: December 2007
Posted by worththevisit
The negatives: Ocean swimming was so-so because there was lots of growth underfoot. I would suggest you use a good bug spray all day long on the beach. Also, the beds need improving.

The positives: Warm friendly atmosphere, clean rooms, pretty bay, long walks. Friendly bar and nice dinners, good variety of live evening music. I loved the lay of the resort - individual cottages. It was very pretty

Traveling the island was wonderful. Rent a car from Olympic (to be picked up at the airport - same rate as a taxi to the resort). In this way, you can visit the grocery store ($24 return by taxi) once you've checked in and return the car in town ($12 to town)
the next day. All this was for the price of a rental of $47.

Gentle Winds Condominiums, St. Croix, USVI traveler review

This must be paradise found. Visited: November 2007
Posted by toc919
We just returned from our fourth consecutive stay at the Gentle Winds in St Croix . It is Paradise Found – trust me. I have traveled to the Caribbean for over 30 years, and nothing compares to this condo.

Our unit (C-6) is a three-bedroom, thre-bath, two level condo with a fantastic view of the ocean, pool, and manicured grounds out the front, and the lush mountains and large vacation homes and villas out the back.

The first floor is comprised of breakfast nook, and a fully equipped kitchen. There is a great room had comfortable island rattan furniture, a master bedroom with queen sized bed and full bath, and a second bedroom that has access to its own bathroom with shower. All have ceiling fans, and there is also a screened porch with great view.

Ascend the spiral staircase to the second floor, and you enter into an open loft sleeping area with sleep sofa and its own mountain view balcony, complete with lounge chairs.

Turn to the left, and you enter into the second master bedroom suite with full bath, king-sized bed, and a balcony from which, on clear nights, you can see the lights of St. Thomas, St. John, and Tortola.

The entire unit is air-conditioned and equipped with ceiling fans, cable TV, VCR, and WiFi connection. There is also a washer and dryer, which comes in very handy and allows you to cut back on the amount of clothes that you need to pack.

After a morning of touring, it's beach time! Gentle Winds has a soft sandy beach, complete with chaise lounges, chairs, and enough shade providing palapas to accommodate everyone.

Many days we would avail ourselves of lunch and drinks served at the “beach shack”. They serve good food, and the best burgers in St. Croix. The beach is 40yards X 250yards with lots of Palms.

Excellent snorkeling is available about 20 yards off shore. The coral reef starts there. When we tired of the beach and ocean, we retired to the pool area. The pool measures about 20 ft by 60 ft with depths from 2-10 feet. Chairs, tables, and umbrellas are provided, and it is a great place, too.

All told, Gentle Winds is a wonderful place to unwind, relax, kick back, and be as busy or lazy as you want. Enjoy every moment of the time you have in Paradise found.

After three months away - we've returned! Visited: June 2006

We had such a great time earlier in the year, we knew we had to return to Sand Castle on the Beach.

Everyone was friendly as ever - and very helpful. They were all happy to see us return so soon.

It was a wonderful hotel by the beach, with two great pools, and the Beachside Cafe served great lunches and dinners. What a way to dine - watching the sunset and listening to the roar of the waves. It was just an awesome place.

We will be returning soon to our favorite hotel in the Caribbean.

The Buccaneer, St. Croix, USVI traveler review

There were limited amenities - it was not worth the price. Visited: July 2007
Posted by myoung6923
This resort was not a five-star as was advertised. We found that the descriptions were, at best, very misleading as to the amenities.

The two pools (which were more than a short walk apart) were very small (tiny was more like it), and not at all what we had expected.

They had claimed there were three restaurants - well, not really. The Mermaid and the Grotto are just beachside grills. While open for lunch and breakfast (mermaid only), they were simple menus of burgers and dogs and such.

The buffet breakfasts at the Mermaid suffered from very slow service, and the food constantly ran out and was only restocked upon request - and after more considerable waiting.

The Terrace and the Brass Parrot were actually the same place - which, while the food was very good, was extremely overpriced, stuffy with a snooty air about it and also had a very limited menu.

Divi Carina Bay Resort & Casino, St. Croix, USVI traveler review

We experienced a dinner disaster at the Starlight Restaurant. Visited: July 2007
Posted by bobnbea
We were excited about eating at The Divi. We had checked their menu and the beautiful restaurant.

We made reservations for a Sunday night, ordered drinks and waited and waited for them because they had to be brought up from downstairs (the upstairs bar was closed).

We were a party of four. Our two orders of sea bass arrived first. The fish was not fully cooked. The scalloped potatoes were cold and brown. The other two entrees arrived significantly later. We sent the fish back to be cooked. We received new platters, but it was after 9:00 pm and we had lost our appetites.

As a consolation, we were given an iced tea and a coke for free. We spent over $100 for supposedly a high class meal. It was extremely disappointing. We do not recommend the Starlight Restaurant.

This was a much needed mini-vacation for me. A friend recommended and booked my stay - and I will make sure this will be "my home" every time I visit.

Before my trip I was a victim of an attempted robbery at my restaurant/bar and needed the R&R. Cottages by the Sea was the perfect remedy!
