Haiti is a country that is trying to expand its reputation as a great place to visit and a destination vacation spot of choice. It suffered a recent setback with the earthquake in 2010, but the natives are resilient, and their spirit wasn’t broken despite the destruction that took place. The island is rebuilding, and businesses—including the rental properties and Haitian villa rentals—are getting back to normal. In the meantime, vacation bargains are there for the taking. Haiti is still a wonderful vacation spot with amazing beaches, incredible food, and the people are friendly and welcoming.
Why Haiti?
|
Oh, bitter-sweet Haiti! One must understand Haiti's turbulent past to appreciate its present strides in returning it to a position of prominence among the many Caribbean destinations. Originally controlled by the Spanish in the 1400's and taken over by the French in the late 1600's, Haiti then experienced an uprising by the African slaves in 1791, resulting in becoming the world's first black republic in the Western Hemisphere and an independent nation by 1804. The balance of the 19th century right up to Haiti's recent past was plagued with similar marked unrest however, relative peace prevails today and the present democratic rule shows renewed interest in reestablishing Haiti as a major player in Caribbean tourism.
Although, it has yet to be seen, the country is showing encouraging signs of revitalization and does have a great deal to offer the traveler seeking adventure, culture and history. There are also several beachfront resorts on Haiti which have reopened, many of which offer amenities and activities enjoyed at competing resorts throughout the Caribbean.
Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, occupying the western third of the island, covering nearly 11,000 square miles. It sits between Cuba and Jamaica offering a varied terrain of rain forested mountains and dry, arid plains as well as palm dotted beaches, both white-sand and black.
Port au Prince, Haiti's capital, is bustling with character and culture, the center for Haitian history and world famous Haitian art. Just up the hillside is Petionville, the country's most affluent suburb well known for its art galleries, upscale hotels and Haitian cuisine. Further up the hill from Petionville, is the prestigious Barbancourt Rum Distillery representing another fine quality of Haiti. An hour outside of Port au Prince you'll find the best, most noteworthy beaches located in the Cote des Arcadins area. Labadie, on the north coast of Haiti, is another fine area offering extreme natural beauty from rocky cliffs and rolling hills to breathtaking beaches and crystal clear waters. It's also the point of various cruise ship dockings.
Haiti is predominantly a French speaking country although English, Spanish and Creole patois are also spoken. You'll feel most at home in the urban or beachside resort areas where English is more prevalent and where the socio-economic differences are less conspicuous.
The Haitian experience isn't for everyone but for now, it is one of the more affordable Caribbean destinations offering a taste of days gone by coupled with the things to come.

Haiti is known for its excellent rum, and the Barbancourt Rum Distillery offers daily tours of its facility to give tourists a glimpse into how it gained its reputation. After the tour, you will be invited to taste the many varieties of the potent brew—including coconut, mango, and coffee—and to visit the store where you can purchase your favorites at bargain prices.
Water sports are a given in Haiti. Many of the villa rentals and other rental properties are located on beaches, but there are excellent public beaches as well that sport both the traditional white sands famous throughout the Caribbean and the more mysterious Haitian black sands. Swimming, beachcombing, snorkeling, and nature walks along the beach offer visitors a pleasant, relaxing way to idle away the hours on the island.
Haiti is an island steeped in amazing history. As the world’s first black republic in the Western Hemisphere, it was borne out of unrest and slave uprisings, but gained its independence as early as 1804. The Museum de Guahaba, the Museum of Haitian Art, and the Museum Du Pantheon National all give visitors to Haiti a glimpse into that haunted past of the island, and they offer a forum to showcase

Many of the villa rentals in Haiti and other accommodations are near restaurants that offer both local cuisine and more international menus; they may also have cocktail lounges or bars where guests can enjoy simpler fare while they look out over the Caribbean Sea. If you’re staying in a Haiti villa rental, you may want to venture away from your retreat for some of your meals. Haiti is known for its wonderful, spicy food and fresh seafood, and there are many restaurants—especially around Port au Prince—that serve up some of the best food on the island. You can try something exotic like barbequed goat, or stick to the more familiar French cuisine, but whatever you try you will be surprised at just how good it really is.
Haiti has several rental car agencies that can hook you up with a vehicle for your stay on the island. If you have an occasion to use some of the other local services outside your villa rental or other rental property accommodation, why not share the experience with us so we can pass the information on to others that visit this site? We love to hear from you and value your comments. You can reach us via email at villas@wheretostay.com or call us at 800.350.6220 with your information.

Le Plaza, hotel review Visited: December 2009

I stayed here last December for three days with my boyfriend. The hotel was pretty and clean.
The only problem I had was the room I requested when I made the reservation through the Internet wasn't the one they gave me. However, they still made me pay the same price for it.
Other than that, I would definitely stay here again.

Dan's Creek Hotel, hotel review Visited: December 2009

I decided to come to Haiti for the first time for New Years Eve. I was truly astonished when I first entered the hotel. The atmosphere was so friendly, and the view was absolutely breathtaking.
When I was shown to my room, my suite was beautiful, and my terrace was facing the beach. Imagine waking up and being able to look at the beach from your room. You could almost touch it.
The food was superb, and the staff catered to my every need. I truly felt as though I was royalty. The owners were always there to make the guests feel as though they were at home.
The New Years Eve party made me feel as though I was in Hollywood. The decor was so beautiful, the entertainment was first class, and the fireworks were unbelieveable.
I can't wait until the next big party, Carnival. I already booked my reservations because this place books up pretty fast.

Have you ever thought of being subjected to loud, infernal noise that keeps you awake, prevents you from sleeping even after demanding days? This place is a half-time concert hall, not worrying about hotel guests who just pay to have a room to relax. Why is it not possible to decide between running a concert hall or running a hotel?
"Relax and dream" it boasts on the homepage. Get me out of here so I can relax and dream!

Dan's Creek Hotel, hotel review Visited: November 2009

Dan's Creek is becoming my home vacation. I have come here twice, and both times I had a wonderful time.
The food is great, the people are wonderful and the view is gorgeous. The atmosphere - there are no words to explain.
The servers (David and Henry) are exceptional. You are taken care of like you are a king.
The cascades are less than five minutes from the hotel, and are the best. Les Cayes and Camp Perrin are not far at all either.
I Would love to spend either Christmas or New Year here, but it's already booked. I will make sure and bring someone with me the next time I come.
Katia and Danny are great. Thanks for this wonderful place!

Villa Creole, hotel review
Posted by cmlurey
Villa Creole was my home away from home for many years. The rooms, views, service and camaraderie were the best. There was nothing fake here. The people were sincere and happy to host you.
Also, the restaurants around the area equal the best in the Caribbean.
I would recommend Villa Creole to anyone visiting the area. I am sad I'm not there now. Enjoy!

It is located conveniently near almost everything...Chan de Mas, Petion Ville, etc.
The rooms are clean, and the service is great with a courteous staff. I regret not getting a room with a balcony, though. Next time I'll request a balcony room!
I do wish their Internet access was functional.

Le Plaza, hotel review Visited: September 2008

We spent one week at Le Plaza, and had a very good experience. We booked an executive room at $119/night and were pleased with the size of the room. It was not new, and there were some quirks with the older bathroom fixtures, but it was clean and comfortable.
The grounds were amazing - beautiful, lush foliage and a large swimming pool. A major plus was the free wireless Internet that allowed us to stay connected with our family back home.
Also, breakfast was included, and the meals offered by the restaurant were reasonably priced and delicious.
What most impressed us was the quality of the service. Everyone went out of their way to be helpful and kind. Being in downtown Port-au-Prince, we did at times feel somewhat insecure, but the hotel had armed guards as well as a number of UN peacekeepers as long-term guests.
Overall, we had a fantastic time and would definitely return.

Hotel Montana was fabulous - except that they have a bed bug issue. I was bitten all over my legs and back. Another colleague of mine also was subjected to bed bugs. It was awful. I had to see a dermatologist once I returned to the United States.

Hotel Oloffson, hotel review Visited: August 2008

I came on the night of August 12th. The pool was nasty, and the room they gave us smelled like paint. The television did not work, and the bathroom was dirty.
Finally, we went to see the third room. There was no air conditioning. They really need to close this place down.

I have stayed at the Oloffson many times over the last 22 years. I have never had a bad stay or met a unhappy traveler. It is a truly unique place and has changed little since Graham Greene.
Your fellow guests are likely to be interesting. I have met diplomats, rock stars, actors, anthropologists and journalists. Great conversations are part of the experience.
Richard, the owner, is shy but friendly. The staff is very accommodating.

Le Plaza, hotel review Visited: May 2007

This property was a decent place to stay. It was right in the heart of Port au Prince, and had a nice pool, a decent restaurant and a bar.
However, about seven or eight years ago, this property was put on "probation" by the Holiday Inn franchises for not meeting standards. Six months later, they were re-evaluated and failed again! At this point, the property had six weeks to remove the Holiday Inn name. So, be advised before you get here, it is not a Holiday Inn anymore.
A good point to this hotel is that, directly across the street, there are vendors selling Haitian paintings, crafts, carvings, ironworks, etc, yes right across the street, like three big displays.
A down-side to this property is that in front of the hotel there are some "beggars" who will literally pester you to death for money. So, beware of that. I found it quite annoying after a rather short period of time.

We stayed at this hotel for ten days. The only problem was that at some point, we had to leave!
They had a decent casino. It wasn't great, but decent. They also had three bars, great pools, and a great restaurant.
It was just a nice place to stay.

The owner didn't seem to care less about our comfort - or anything else for that matter.
There are many nicer places to stay in Haiti besides the Oloffson.

Ideal Villa Hotel, hotel review Visited: October 2006

It was my first time visiting a hotel in Haiti. My friend was staying here for ten days with her husband, and I was visiting her every day because I loved the atmosphere and the view of the hotel/apartment.
The only thing I did not enjoy was the pool because of its depth. I will recommend it to my friends and family. My husband and I will stay here on our next visit to Haiti, which will be soon.
Ideal Villa, thank you for letting me visit your secret garden. I enjoyed it very much.

This was my first time staying in a hotel in Haiti, and my friends and I enjoyed it very much. We rented an apartment.
The whole place was lovely, the employees were very friendly, and the place was very clean.
Two things that I dind't like about the hotel were the parking space and the pool. I don't know how to swim, and the pool was too deep for my kids and me.
I will recommend it to all my friends and family, and I will stay here in the future. Keep up the good work!

Ideal Villa Hotel has been a second home for me for over 25 years. I have seen the hotel grow from a small inn.
They offer good rooms, food, service, and decor. The only complaint I have is that the employees should be paid a better rate. That is one big example why Haiti is so poor.

I have traveled very much and I chose to get married in Haiti because I wanted to spend my honeymoon in Moulin Sur Mer.
It was an enchanting stay. The room could have used more towels, though. The staff was very nice. The food was superb and the beach, Oh the beach! I can't wait to get back there.

Christopher Hotel & Convention Center, hotel review Visited: September 2004
Posted by danebramage2002
This hotel used to be the best in Haiti during the glory days of the Duvalier regime. Now it is worn out and needing repair. Staff is friendly, but hotel lacks almost all modern amenities and comforts. Door locks / patio locks unsecure. No room safe. Windows easily accessed from outside with no locks. No cable TV. Worn out furniture and bed sheets. Extremely limited dining menu. Out of bottled water for days at a time. Owned by an elderly French couple who have let the place slowly go down and fall into disrepair. A much, much, much better choice (for about the same money) is the Hotel Montana (currently the best in Port Au Prince)...which is paradise compared to the Christopher.

Moulin Sur Mer is one of the most romantic places on earth! I bet you'll love it.
I recently spent a week here, and I didn't want to come back home.
The staff was very nice, and always smiling. The grounds were always clean and the food was just great! I cannot wait to go back.
