The grounds were beautiful, but overall - it was just okay. Visited: September 2006

I spent just one night at this hotel with my mom and two-year-old son. I wanted to start our vacation with the best.

The rooms were beautiful, spacious, and very clean! The grounds were perfectly groomed, refreshing, and inviting. The staff was nice to work with, and catered to our needs.

My family does not normally stay at this kind of hotel, or pay this much for a room night. We had decided to splurge for this hotel. The atmosphere of the hotel was very rich. Coming from farm country, we did not feel like we fit in at this property. However, we did have fun during our short stay.

Our experience was less than favorable at this hotel. Visited: July 2004

My husband and I, along with our two sons, stayed at the Grand Wailea for our 35th wedding anniversary based on the reviews which we had read.

Although the reviews were varied, we wanted to stay and treat ourselves. Our experience, however was less than favorable and I almost lost my husband and sons in a kayaking accident on a tour arranged through the hotel.

My family's kayak overturned due to poor judgement on the part of the tour guide and the injuries sustained from the sea urchins and coral required medical treatment and a very painful couple of weeks after.

For a "so called" experienced guide to tell customers that it was not necessary to wear life jackets or shoes, says to me that this individual used very poor judgement. Of course, he denied the statement. However, wouldn't you think that if the rules were abided by, my family would have been wearing their jackets and shoes at the time of the accident?

The hotel made no attempt to offer even a dinner for our mishap and even had the audacity to charge us for two additional nights even though my sons and husband were in no condition to travel.

This hotel was privately owned and it seemed apparent that their only goal was to make money off us rather than accommodate their guests.

We also noted that the employees never smiled during our stay and seemed very unhappy in their jobs which said a great deal. For the cost of $435 per night per room, I can honestly say that our money was wasted. There are so many nicer and luxurious hotels in Maui to stay at that I recommend you save your money.

Also, the pictures for the Grand Wailea did not show the wear on this very dated hotel.

Shame on you, Grand Wailea, you won't get any recommendations from this family.

This is a great resort for families. Visited: July 2004

We recently returned from an eight-night stay at Grand Wailea. We had one of the suites in the Wailea Tower. It was very spacious and even had surround sound speakers in the living area.

Service throughout the resort was good. The spa was amazing and the treatments were well done. The food was good considering this was very large resort.

If you have kids, this is the place to stay with all the pools and slides. If you want a quiet place, then go next door to the Four Seasons.

There was a 1.5 mile walkway that was great for walking or jogging along the hotels and the oceans. This was a very nice place.

We can't wait to return! Visited: May 2004

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon in May of '04.

This hotel was huge and had the most beautiful grounds in all of Maui. It had five or six pools-with waterfalls, grottos, and two waterslides that were awesome. This section of the pool tended to have more children (and adults that seek the inner child in themselves).

For the more conservative vacationer, there was an "adults only" pool higher up that was also gorgeous, huge, with two private hot tubs, and a separate outdoor cafe/restaurant.

The rooms were amazing and quite large with very comfortable beds, a huge bathroom with marble double sinks, private bathooom, stall shower, and huge soaking tub.

Service here was good, but not great for what you would expect from a five-star resort. It was probably not up to par with the Four Seasons as far as service, but the grounds and pools were definitely better at the Grand Wailea.

Although expensive, it was well worth every penny and we cannot wait to return. Also, I forgot - the beach was wonderful!

Take advice from a local. Visited: November 2003

I am a resident of Kihei who recently visited the Spa at the Grand Wailea as a birthday present from my husband. While I agree with most of the assessments that the hotel and grounds are beautiful, I also agree that the staff, service and upkeep of the hotel in general is significantly lacking.

I found the Terme Hydrotherapy area to be dirty and poorly maintained, with missing tile and grout in every pool, dirty water and mold in conspicuous places; certainly not what I expected from such and expensive and highly acclaimed spa.

Determined to enjoy my experience, I decided to overlook these unpleasant details and relax. About 20 minutes after arriving (five minutes into my actual appointment), the power went out. No bubbles, no waterfall shower, no sauna, no steam room - just lots and lots of hot water getting colder by the minute. Thank God that the majority of the terme area is lit by daylight or it could have been a much more unpleasant experience.

The staff did not immediately realize the situation and once they finally did notice, they seemed confused and unsure what to do. Logic, good business sense and just plain common sense should have told them that the best course of action would be to apologize for the inconvenience, and reschedule the appointments.

There must be something in that water, because this didn’t happen. The staff continued to act as if everything was fine, like a bunch of blind moles milling around in familiar tunnels. I spent the next 40 minutes stewing in the ever cooler water until it was time for my massage. It became apparent that there was no manager present in the spa and the employees were lost without one.

After returning from my massage I found the spa deserted, with only a few employees ushering the remaining customers out. I was told that the rest of my package had been canceled, that I did not need to sign anything as I would not be charged for my visit, and could reschedule the appointment if I so desired.

A full month later, my husband was charged $151 by the Grand Wailea. After several phone calls to them he was finally told that the charge was for the massage I received during my visit, even though I was told that I would not be charged because it was part of a package that could not be provided due to the power outage.

Needless to say, the charge was disputed and in the end the Grand Wailea did not have a leg to stand on without a signature authorizing the charge.

It is now abundantly clear to me that the Grand Wailea is nothing more than a tourist trap. It will not receive any future business from me, nor will I allow anyone I know to be taken by them.

Grand Wailea is a splendid, gorgeous and gracious hotel. Visited: October 2003

We have stayed at the Grand Wailea twice, once when they opened it over ten years ago and again this past year. Both times we loved our experience.

The beauty of the hotel was the first thing we noticed. If you do not feel like you are in your own personal castle wandering around, free to look at whatever you like, then I can't imagine what else could make you feel this way.

The open air circular bar, centrally located in the cool marble and stone entry, was gracious and urbane, with the occasional live jazz guitarist. Reception was accommodating and we found that they were willing to upgrade us upon request. Thus, we got a fantastic oceanfront room in the chapel wing for about half the price. This is the view I recommend.

The Napua Tower was overpriced, I've been in the suites for parties and they were very nice, but how much time would you be spending there? In addition, the rooms we stayed in were very well appointed, with marble showers, large comfortable beds, excellent maid service.

The maids left surprises for us almost every day- chocolates one day, fruit another, flowers, a poem.... we felt very well taken care of. Plus, they seemed invisible.

I went to the spa and it was expensive, but unlike the reviewer who was so disappointed, I thought it was very nice. I didn't see any mold, and I enjoyed the terme hydrotherapy or whatever they called it. It came with any spa service guests got and you could get into different baths each with their own theme- mud, herbs, other interesting stuff.

I had a hot stone massage in an open room looking out over the formal pool that was simply decadent. I've been to top-flight spas, and I wouldn't classify this one as the best I have ever been to, but it was in the top five.

The pools at this resort were divine. I loved the acitvity pool; you could start at the top and swim from pool to pool, you could go down slides and at some points could be pulled along by a current. You could pick up a raft and even float along.

There were also hot tub grottoes among them and we went past the swim up bar with a very friendly bartender who recognized us repeatedly. The waiter service at the pool was very, very slow and haphazard. I recommend immediately corralling a waitress, and letting her know directly that you want her to stop by every half hour or so- or order two drinks at once. They made nice tropical fruity drinks.

We are world travelers and we love the Grand Wailea. It is a luxurious retreat. We don't eat there much, and haven't tried the Japanese restaurant. I recommend Sansei for sushi in Kihei. We saw Willie Nelson there! Have fun.

This was the best ever! Visited: March 2002

My wife and I have traveled a good part of the US and Europe and found The Grand Wailea to be among the very best.

Even though the hotel was booked solid, there was no over crowding in the many pools and restaurants. Since the hotel was so large and spread out, we did not constantly run into the same people.

The service was gracious and prompt. It was paradise.

Elegance and comfort all in one! Visited: December 2001
Posted by luvlabb
I only got to stay here one night.

I arrived after dark, and when I arrived, all of the trees lining the driveway (about 1/4 mile long) were wrapped with little white Christmas lights. It was beautiful! I arrived with my mouth open in awe.

All the staff was surperb! My room was very comfortable. The bathroom was large. I had a tub and a shower. The lanai was average. I had a ocean view.

I visited the two pools. They were so large! One had a Tarzan rope, places to swim into caves and caverns, rope bridges and much more!

Overall this was nice. I only wish I could have stayed here longer.

Surely one of America's finest resorts Visited: January 2000

We really enjoyed the week we spent here. The gardens are spectacular, the staff is professional and friendly, and the facilities are beyond compare. We found no signs of deferred maintenance anywhere on the property. Food and service were exceptional.
The rooms were spacious and the bathrooms surely qualify as one of the top 10 in the world. My wife reports that the spa as excellent. We met a gentlemen at the resort who comes here three weeks every six months "just for the spa", so he ought to know!
