Kaanapali Beach was clean, friendly, with helpful staff in all aspects. Visited: February 2006

My wife and I stayed here for four nights.

They provided clean rooms, good beds, good shower, and quiet facilities. There was music every night in the courtyard, and they served good food in the restaurants.

The only thing I wished for was wireless internet access in the rooms (it was available in the courtyard and lobby). However, that did not distract from an enjoyable stay.

Beware of online booking and rude management. Visited: March 2004
Posted by cartwril
I never actually stayed at the hotel so I won't give it the worst rating because I can't say anything about the hotel itself. I booked a room on the hotel's website Sunday night for a stay the following weekend. On Tuesday morning, I called to cancel the reservation because it turned out we couldn't go. The hotel refused to cancel it and said they would charge me the entire amount ($360) because they have a strict policy that you have to cancel 7 days in advance. Their website does not tell you the policy if you go through the "online reservations" process. It's there, but only if you click on the "rates" link and scroll all the way down. Since I wanted to know availability as well as rates, I clicked on "reservations" and the policy was never disclosed. Nor did it tell me that I was essentially booking a non-refundable rate since it was within the 7 days. The confirmation e-mail that contained the policy didn't arrive until two days after I booked (and after I had tried to cancel), but it wouldn't have helped since it was non-refundable from the second I booked it online. They were very rude when I called to cancel, telling me it was my fault for making a hotel reservation when I wasn't sure we could come (to which I replied, if I had known it was non-refundable, I wouldn't have made the reservation). They did not even acknowledge my letter to their management explaining the problem. I got my money back by contesting the charge with my credit card company. The management of this hotel clearly doesn't care about fair dealing or customer service. Beware.

We had a beautiful Hawaiian experience at Kaanapali Beach Hotel. Visited: June 2003

This was a charming hotel, as opposed to the neighboring mega-hotels with dozens of pools, water slides and screaming kids--you can get that in any state.

For a "Hawaiian experience" I'd highly recommend the Kaanapali Beach Hotel. They jprovided great service, clean (but modest) rooms, nightly hula dancing by the bar, and great snorkeling.

You could always visit the other hotels if you feel the urge to race down waterslides (everything was within walking distance); we were always grateful to come back to our quiet nook every night!

As for the island of Maui--rent a car (Jeep). There is so much to see and do!

It was wonderful. Visited: May 2003

My friend and I stayed for five nights in late May. We are both women and experienced travelers in our 50s.

We traveled from the East Coast and arrived after 18 hours of flying and driving. We were welcomed by the lovely hula, a music show and a plate of fresh fruit and cheese in our room. It got better from there.

Every day was a real adventure. The staff was exceptional, not only friendly and warm, but also competent. The welcome breakfast was a must (we won a free dinner) and we did the garden tour. We did feel like part of the family and are looking forward to our next stay.

The location was great, near Whalers Village. The resort itself was small, but felt very private even though the beach walk will get you anywhere you want to go. The other hotels may have been glitzier, but this one was unique.

My only suggestion is get your breakfast in the Tike Terrace, not the Mixed Plate. This was the best value in Maui!

The grounds, the room, and the staff were all great. Our only complaint was that the food in the mixed plate restaurant was lukewarm. We would certainly stay here again.

We had a wonderful trip. Visited: February 2003

Our room was a basic standard hotel room. It contained a king-sized bed, a day bed set up like a couch, small table with two chairs, and balcony with small table and two chairs. They also had a coffee pot, small fridge, iron/board and safe.

The balcony overlooked the courtyard and swimming pool area. We had a very small view of the ocean through all the palm trees. The hotel provided turn-down service with flowers and either a small box of two chocolates or two macadamia nut cookies (yummy). The bathroom was quite small and the bed was as hard as a rock. Though we didn't spend too much time at the hotel, for the time we did spend, we would have loved a better room with a better ocean view.

The beach was beautiful. The view was just gorgeous. The water was a deep sapphire blue. It was very rough with lots of waves - and it was cold. The sand was brown and coarse. The hotel offered dual lounge chairs for rent for $16. You were not allowed to bring the free lounge chairs from the courtyard or the pool area to the beach.

There was a sign posted at the entrance to the beach that swimming in the ocean was dangerous and to "swim at your own risk". I decided to brave the ocean and its cold water and ended up getting knocked around by several waves. i got sand all through by bathing suit and it just stuck to me like mud. It was very difficult to get it off.

We ended up going over to the pool to actually swim. The water there was pretty cold, too, but we swam a little, then lounged around on a couple of chairs. We got lunch at the pool grill and a couple of pina colodas from the bar and enjoyed the afternoon. Beware though, the drinks were $7.25 a piece.

We enjoyed the hotel and the beach. It was not crowded at all. There were lots of 50+ couples and mid-couples with small children (not of school age). The service and friendliness of the hotel staff was exceptional. The night before our last day, we received an invitation to their farewell ceremony. We met in the lobby and a staff member thanked us for choosing their hotel, sang us a "good-bye" song and provided us with a lasting nut lei.

The weather was quite questionable throughout our stay. It was overcast, cloudy and windy with a couple of days of rain. The night air was very chilly. I did not enjoy the weather at all.

It was really nice! Visited: December 2001

The Kaanapali Beach Hotel was not as fancy as others in the area, but it was really nice. And, you cannot beat the price (although nothing in this area was cheap!).

I loved the area and loved being able to walk to other resorts, shopping, and restaurants. I enjoyed the food, and the service was excellent and not rushed. The property itself was large, and there was more open space than at the other pricier properties. Also, the beach was perfect!

Absolutely fantastic! Visited: September 2001

This hotel may be moderately priced, but service and accommodations are on a scale of a 5-star hotel. The service was friendly and helpful, daily maid and turn down service.

I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our stay. We are definitely planning on returning next year!

Fabulous! Visited: August 2000

Everything was great--the pool, the beach, etc. Although, a boat came into shore every once and awhile to pick people up.

Mixed plate was delicious if you like a lot of food that comes from pigs. The people are accommodating. The views and sunsets were to die for. I would definitely come back.

Not so great Visited: August 2000

The question with any purchase is whether you get what you pay for. The Kaanapaali Beach Hotel isn't as expensive as the Westin or even the Sheraton, so you shouldn't expect that kind of quality. And while it seems pretty expensive to me, it's pretty reasonable compared to other Hawaiian hotels.

The rooms are clean, if spartan and on the small side. The architecture is very Las Vegas casino circa 1962. There are a lot of kids here - this is definitely not a romantic getaway place. The beach is nice, but crowded (welcome to Maui). We saw a turtle one morning about 20 feet from shore. That was pretty cool. The snorkeling is pretty good right up the beach by the Sheraton.

The food at the Mixed Plate is basically inedible. We ate a lot of toast and pineapple for breakfast because everything else was so unappetizing. The staff was nice enough.

All in all, the Kaanapaali was like a stateside Holiday Inn with a nice beach.
