The Fairmont Orchid is sheer beauty! Visited: September 2005 |

I had a oceanview room for three nights here. I was "Wow'ed" as soon as I walked into the lobby. I was surrounded by expensive rugs, antique fixtures and art, as well as the beautiful flowers and sounds of the ocean.
My room was nice, with a large balcony, and a huge bathroom with two sinks. The staff was very nice and quick to say "Aloha!".
In addition, the pool was inviting, and the beach was really nice with a lagoon area safe for swimming and snorkeling. This property was so large it was easy for me to get lost just going to my room.
Overall, I would stay here again for the view and for the people. The only thing I did not like is that there was no business center at this property. However, there was high speed internet available in all the rooms. |

The Fairmont Orchid was breathtaking. Visited: December 2002 |

I stayed at The Fairmont Orchid for a week in December. It was an amazing experience. The staff was wonderful, friendly and genuine. I splurged on the deluxe oceanside massage/body wrap treatment. It was two hours of heaven on earth in a private oceanfront massage tent with the waves lapping the shore. It was truly one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
The restaurants were pricy, but the food was excellent. I ordered something different every day and was pleased each time. Stay away from the breakfast buffet's sticky buns unless you want to gain a lot of weight -- they were absolutely the most scrumptious things I have ever eaten. If you eat one, you won't be able to resist them for the rest of your stay.
The beach was small but beautiful -- white sand, calm water (it was a protected lagoon), towels, loungers, lemon ice water provided. There were also kayaks, canoes, snorkeling equipment, etc. You could certainly venture beyond the protected lagoon area into the ocean to surf or paddle as you wished.
Each morning there was yoga on the beach -- even a beginner would enjoy it. In the evening, a torchlighter ran throughout the grounds lighting the torches, ending the journey on an outcrop of lava rock, framed by the setting sun where he (or she) blew into a conch shell. I saw this seven nights in a row and it was still a moving experience.
The sunsets were rapid, but stunning. There was a sunset terrace just off the lobby where guests could enjoy the view surrounded by the lush foliage and tropical flowers.
The grounds were magnificent -- very well-maintained, lush, green, and waterfalls were everywhere. On the road from the Kona airport leading into the resort area, the landscape was rather arid -- and there were a lot of fields of black lava -- I thought it was so cool. The resort area itself (Mauna Lani) was lush and green.
My only regret is that I did not spend a bit more for an oceanview room -- I had a garden view room, but next time I won't go all that way and not spend a bit more to have the oceanview from my balcony . . . next time! The room itself was very spacious (I had a room with one king bed), well-cared for and sparkling clean. There was a spacious balcony (or patio) off each room with a lounge chair and patio furniture. The bathroom was huge and modern.
I guess I forgot the pool -- it was great -- really big, lots of loungers, as well as two hot-tubs, one which was kind of secluded in the gardens just off the pool area. The staff was very attentive here as well.
I would definitely return to this resort. |

It was perfect! Visited: August 2002 |

My family and I stayed at the Orchid for 10 nights in August. 99% of our stay was perfect. The grounds of the hotel were beautifully landscaped and maintained, and the staff was genuinely friendly.
One important word of caution to would-be guests of the Orchid would be - beware of the contruction! They were building new homes near the south side of the property. The Orchid was made up of two main towers. The Kohala tower was far away from the construction, in fact, we never even noticed it! However, the Kona tower was next door to the construction. Avoid the Kona tower at all costs!
Don't worry about the construction disturbing a beautiful day at the beach, though. The beach was breathtaking with great snorkeling, several sea turtles in residence and attentive service from the hotel staff.
The amenities at the Orchid were first rate from the free Aveda grooming products in the bathroom to the excellent (although expensive) restaurants on site. If you are looking to be pampered in elegant, lush surroundings (and really who isn't?) the Orchid is for you. |

I would recommend this property to anyone. It's beautiful, the views are amazing, the food is excellent and the staff is very friendly. It is pricey, but worth it. This place is very peaceful, romantic and exactly what you think of when you hear the word "Hawaii." |
