This was simply the best. Visited: September 2004

My wife and I stayed at the Kahala for over a week in September to celebrate our one-year anniversary. There is a reason this hotel is Hawaii's only five-star and five-diamond hotel. It's simply the best.

The service is impeccable, the people are friendly, and the food is magnificent. In addition to that, the hotel is on its own private beach and is secluded from Honolulu (though only ten minutes away).

There is no way you can have a bad time at this hotel, it is paradise. My wife and I plan to travel the world now and stay at as many Mandarin Oriental Hotels we can. Hopefully, the others will live up to this hype.

We loved our stay. Visited: July 2003

My family of four stayed here recently, and we entirely enjoyed our stay. The staff was very friendly, and our children were not only welcomed, but also treated as respected guests.

It was pricy, but worth it. We were upgraded to a room with an incredible view. My only complaint was that they overcharged me for a kayak rental and refused to decrease the charges. Still, it was a very peaceful hotel I would highly recommend.

High quality vacationing without huge crowds Visited: December 2000

This was the second time I've visited this hotel, but I was too young to remember much the first time. We had a great time here. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful - among the best I've ever experienced.

The hotel was nice and the food was quite good. The dinner restaurant's food quality was outstanding (and this is coming from very picky people)! The breakfast buffet was excellent, and we had it almost every day (high price for good food).

This hotel was nice, because it was just a bit on its own and not among huge crowds. It felt very calm. I was surprised at the $ rating on this website, because it was actually quite expensive. We ended up spending about $8,000 for a family of five (5 nights).

The only negative things were that the staff was not good at giving directions, and their local maps were poor and often totally inaccurate (not a big deal). Pick the time of year you come. It was December, and the ocean was pretty cold - not what I had expected. If you like warm water, pick another time of year. If you want to surf or do serious snorkeling, you will have to drive somewhere else - the beach in front of the hotel was for viewing and dipping purposes only.

The dolphin setup was really neat. You end up mesmerized watching these beautiful creatures, and the fulltime staff, who work with them, obviously have deep feelings of love for the dolphins. You can get in and be with them, but it's quite pricey to do that. We chose to just watch from above the water.

You get what you pay for, and you will be paying for this high quality vacation. But, it was worth it, and when you leave you will realize why many famous people have visited this resort over the years. (There's a wall of photos of the celebrities who have visited.)

I highly recommend it! Visited: July 2000

A very relaxing resort on a beautiful private beach with a dolphin lagoon. The trade winds are constantly blowing here. The resort sits between Diamond Head and Ko Ko head volcanoes.

The rooms to me are definitely 5-star. The food and service are five-star also. This is the place to go to be treated like a king or queen. I was truly in paradise!
