i am looking forward to staying in Hawaii, specifically in Maui. hopefully at one of the 4-5 star hotels like the Ritz or the Four seasons. Or maybe even the Westin resort in Maui.

Horrible Hotel Visited: August 2003

Worst hotel we ever stayed at, very run down, terrible smell in room and dirty. Would not recommend this to anyone.

It was a great value for our money. Visited: September 2002

This was our first trip to Maui, and we knew we would not be spending a great deal of time at a hotel. We set our priorities and began the search for our accommodations.

The Ohana Maui Islander fit exactly what we wanted. We opted for a two-bedroom (good mattresses and pillows), two bath (full baths with tubs and showers) suite with a full kitchen and lanai.

Our priorities included location (off the main stream of Lahaina, but just a 5 minute walk to all the action), parking ($35.00 for the week), maid service (excellent), a/c (in all 3 rooms), cooking facilities, in-room safe, safe and convenient. The Ohana Maui Islander fit it to a tee.

The 2 story buildings were surrounded by beautiful gardens. The pool was well maintained and the staff made usfeel welcome and provided guests with Aloha Spirit. The ages of guests were as wide as the nationalities. Yes, the hotel was a bit worn, in need of painting in many places (the GM told me they are going to refurbish the hotel within the next 2 years).

The activities desk offered some of the best prices for activities without a timeshare obligation. Housekeeping was exceptional and non-intrusive. We loved the convenience of being able to walk to Lahaina and not worry about finding a parking space. There were many moderately priced restaurants within a few short blocks. Cafe O'Lei was our favorite. They offered excellent food, oceanview and great prices.

OMI was a budget hotel - no fancy lobbies, fountains, hot tubs, spas or gym facilities. However, we thoroughly enjoyed the hotel and the staff and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone as long as they were not expecting the Ritz. We saved lots of money by having the right location, full kitchen and for me, daily maid service.

We visited the lobbies and fountains of the more expensive hotels as well as the beaches of these hotels without the big price ticket. We will return to Maui and the Maui Islander again.

We were very pleased with location and ambiance. Visited: September 2002

We were very pleased with the location and ambiance of the Maui Islander. Lahaina was a charming and genuinely historic village, which was the residence of the Hawaiian kings, and was far more congenial than the modern and rather sterile resorts at Kaanapali three miles north.

There were only three hotels in central Lahaina, and the other two, although historic, were in the center of the tourist traffic and were rather noisy. The Maui Islander was less than a five-minute walk from the center in a quiet neighborhood.

The grounds were densely planted with flowers and palm trees, so that from the swimming pool, the two-story buildings were barely visible through the vegetation. There were many birds, and if we left the window open, the dawn chorus of birdsong was impressive. We also found the staff to be friendly and the two activity desks were both very helpful.

The Maui Islander offered good value and convenient location. Visited: August 2002

The Maui Islander was a nice hotel in a very convenient location. It was a short, easy walk to all of Lahaina.

The rooms were nice and clean - but not luxurious. The grounds were nice and clean, and we thought it was a safe area.

They provided very good value for our money. And all the staff was very friendly, nice, courteous and helpful.

The hotel was conveneintly located within easy walking distance to the beach and all the wharf locations for snorkeling, parasailing, fishing and where many of the other tours left.

A home away from home. Visited: February 2001
Posted by june
My first visit to the Maui Islander (in May, 1999) was bittersweet as it was the last holiday my husband and I were able to take together before his passing (two months later).

The kindness and hospitality of all employees led me to return in February, 2001, with my daughter and granddaughter. The same friendly, efficient atmosphere was still there, along with the simple but clean accommodations, proximity to all the delights of Lahaina (it truly is "steps away from Front Street"), and a convenient activities desk to book a rental car or any tour desired.

Fully equipped kitchens in the suites, mean that the expense of eating out can be kept to a minimum. This hotel, although not as luxurious as some, is the best value for money on Maui, in my view. It is not on the beach, but the pool is always clean and is perfect for a quick dip, and the Ka'anapali Trolley is a block away, to whisk one away to "Dig Me Beach" for the day.

The Islander truly was our home away from home. (P.S. We are planning another visit, for three weeks, at the beginning of February, 2003.)
