Turtle Bay Resort has serious security issues. Visited: December 2008 |

Please, be advised that Turtle Bay Resort is scene of many crimes ranging from burglaries to physical violence against women. This information is being protected from going public, so tourists keep coming to the island.
I am a photographer. I follow and photograph ASP World Tour of Surfing. In December 2008, I covered Surfing Championship on Oahu. I stayed at Turtle Bay Resort. It was my fourth year in a row staying here.
My room was burglarized in the afternoon hours, and my photographic equipment stolen. It was "clean entry - clean exit" type situation. Only the maid and her helper (the towel boy) were in my room in my absence. The maid didn't show up for work the next day, and for days after.
The head of Hotel Security, Mr. Thomas Dongher, didn't seem to think it was important to visit the crime scene and process it (as every other law enforcement officer would do). In fact, he accused me - the victim - of misplacing my own equipment and blaming it on the hotel.
The hotel management, Mr. Bob Boyle, the manager and Mr. Cross, the vice-manager, have never responded to my phone calls, registered e-mails and registered letters. If fact, Mr. Boyle even refused to accept and sign a certified letter addressed to him.
The day before we left for the mainland, there was a violent attack committed against a woman at the Turtle Bay Hotel (attended by Honolulu police officers).
It seems the hotel knows that you, as a visitor, have only limited time at the island and that you will have to leave as your airline ticket dictates. They seem to hide until you leave. Once thousands of miles away, it is very easy for them to brush you off. In the meantime, I have lost little over $10,000 dollar of my possessions.
While the hotel and its surroundings may look like a paradise - they also hide serious security issues that happen at the Turtle Bay Resort at this very moment.

Turtle Bay is a laid back and comfortable resort. Visited: January 2006 |

This was our honeymoon resort and first trip to Hawaii. Not knowing anything differently (even now), we were very satisfied with the property.
However, it was an hour or so drive from Waikiki, and there was not much else around except for major surfing beaches (which was why we stayed on the northshore).
The weather was damp and very chilly at times, and the water was not an option. It was too cold for my southern bones!
The scenery was beautiful, and we got to see more local living.
The room was average, and the breakfast buffet was very expensive. However, it was the prettiest breakfast buffet I have ever seen - and it tasted pretty good as well.
If you just want to stay for low-key peace, quiet and relaxing time, this is the place. But remember, there is not as much sun in the winter months. |

The staff was attentive and very helpful. The accommodations were unbelievably wonderful. Our entire stay at the resort was amazing.
The surfing lessons and horse riding were wonderful as well. |

We are already planning our next trip to Turtle Bay! Visited: March 2005 |

My husband and I did a lot of research before choosing Turtle Bay. It was a wonderful choice.
There were so many activities at the resort that we hardly had to leave to have fun. Our room was spacious and very clean. We had a great view of the ocean in which we could watch whales from our balcony.
The beach was not overcrowded, and there were miles of shoreline to walk. During one of the walks, we saw turtles and one day there was a seal lounging on the sand.
With the variety of shops, we bought all of our gifts at the resort, especially the shops on the pool level. For the entire duration of our stay, the staff was exceptional. We didn't feel like we were at a resort. It felt more like we were staying with friends. We did not have any bad experiences at all. We highly recommend to our friends that they visit Turtle Bay. |

Turtle Bay was not a bad place. Visited: April 2003 |

The resort overall was fine. Most rooms had a nice view, although the rooms were basic, and my bed was very, very average. There were lots of places to walk.
The beach was very nice, but a bit rocky. The beach service was non-existent, and the towels they provided were almost like cheap shower towels (at the beach). The gym was very small, although they did offer aerobic classes. I did not try out the spa.
The people were very friendly, and that was key. |

We had the most wonderful five days at Turtle Bay Resort. We golfed, we went whale watching and horseback riding on the beach. We also rented a sporty convertible car to check out the shops. We did it all - had the best food, service and room. We loved every minute of it! We also enjoyed watching the surfers, what an awesome sight! |

A nice place at the North Shore. Visited: March 2002 |

If we hadn't just spent five nights at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, we would have been more impressed with this place.
Although it showed some age, renovations were taking place and it did have a great location at the North Shore. All the rooms had an ocean view where you can watch the surfers and whales right from your balcony.
The room was nice and the one restaurant we tried on-site was good for breakfast. The pool was nice, but we only saw a small swimming area at the beach as it was rocky in places.
The remodeling is to be completed by fall of 2002 and the plans look really nice.
Overall, I enjoyed this place. The pace was much slower here than on the other side of the island. |

It could have been better for the money. Visited: December 2001 |

I won the trip to Hawaii in a competition and went with high hopes and I'm glad to say I wasn't disappointed. The only thing that wasn't brilliant about my holiday was that building work was being carried out when I was there, but I understand that it had to be done and it was unfortunate timing.
The room I stayed in was a basic one but it had a balcony, tv, bathroom and an eating table. My advice is not to be put off by bad reviews as there are safe places to swim and the people are extremely friendly. Although I do feel that the prices are a little too high. It's all about location, location, location. |

We love the North Shore area. Turtle Bay is not the best beach area, but it is a five-minute drive to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
One word of caution - if you stay in the condos, it is a long walk to the beach. Make sure you request an air-conditioned condo, because you are too far away from the beach to get any ocean breezes, and it is hard to get a fan! The pools on site are very nice.
Make sure to rent a car and drive around. Turtle Bay is less than an hour's drive from anywhere on Oahu. We drove 400 miles in 4 days!
It is definitely worth the driving time to escape the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. |

In the middle of nowhere and needs major renovation Visited: December 2000 |

There was not much to see or do outside of the hotel property. The hotel itself was in the process of being repaired on the outside (concrete was eroding everywhere on the building).
Everything about this place was old, worn and tired. It needed major refurbishing from the decor to the ceiling tiles to the rugs and furniture. Even the entrance doors looked terrible; they were so pitted from the salt spray of the ocean that they needed replacing or resurfacing.
The winter surf here had large breakers, so it was not suitable for children or weak swimmers on the beach. There were much nicer places to stay on Oahu that were in better condition for the same money they charge here. Their Sunday brunch, however, was very good!

Well, they call it a Hilton Visited: February 2000 |

They call it a Hilton, but from the outside it looks like a war zone. The frames for the windows are rusting, the concrete is falling apart and in general it’s not good.
However, the staff is great and the views are second to none. My only complaint is with the parking. We had a pre-wedding party there and the bill came to over $1400. If you've been to Hawaii you'll understand, if not, you'll find out. And they still made me pay the $10 parking?
