Andros Island Bonefish Club sits on property that was once a sisal plantation. Owned by the British, the plantation's main function was to make ropes for boats. In the year 1984, Captain Rupert Leadon purchased this property from the government of the Bahamas with a dream to create the lodge which stands today.
Located approximately 150 miles southeast of Miami, Andros Island is the largest island in the Bahamas chain, yet it remains the least populated. The AIBC is located at the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean, Cargill Creek and the eastern end of the North Bight. This places us just 100 yards from a productive, wadable flat where bonefish are frequently spotted tailing in the nearby waters. In this ideal position we are able to offer out guests direct access to some of the best saltwater sport fishing in all the world and more fishable flats than any area of the Caribbean. These waters are renowned for both the incomparable sheer numbers of bonefish in large schools averaging 3-5 pounds, as well as the great potential for trophy-size, double-digit bonefish swimming in its waters. Andros has long been known as the home of the world’s largest bonefish. (close)

Androsia is a batik fabric and garment manufacturing factory located on the island of Andros in the Bahamas. Androsia has a complete line of women's, men's, and children's batik clothing as well as accessories, home goods, and fabric sold by the yard. In 1973, at the same time the Bahamas became an independent country, a small cottage industry was formed by Dick and Rosi Birch of Small Hope Bay Lodge. The idea started when they watched a guest occupy children on a rainy day with a batik craft project. This was a product that they reasoned could be unique, colorful, and 100% Bahamian done. Once the fabric was made, it could be sewn into easy care island garments. This would help employ single women with families, an objective that was especially important to the Birches. They developed the concept that each yard would be hand done. Every print would symbolize a natural element found in the Bahamas, and all the colors would be colors pulled right from the islands. Androsia is sold throughout the inhabited islands of the Bahamas as well as at the factory outlet store in Fresh Creek, Andros, and online.

In April 2002, the Bahamian government created the Central Andros National Park. Encompassing more than 300,000 acres, the sanctuary protects major terrestrial and marine habitats. The combination of a relatively small population of 9,000 citizens and local support for conserving natural resources means protection efforts can be advanced.
The island's reef system is one of the longest and best preserved in the world. However, it is threatened by unsustainable fishing practices and damage caused by boats and irresponsible divers. Other threats include water pollution and offshore channeling and dredging.
In 2006, the Conservancy led a team of scientists, researchers and students on a scientific expedition to explore the west side of Andros Island. They discovered here a haven for baby sharks, turtles and a wealth of other natural life. There is now an in-depth stakeholder analysis going on to determine the expansion of a national park on the west side of the island.
The Conservancy is also working with local partner organizations, the Andros Conservancy and Trust (ANCAT) and the Bahamas National Trust, to develop management plans and activities for the Central Andros National Park. The goal is to continue to work with island residents to support their wishes for an island-wide network of parks. (close)
