St. Kitts is an island that will have something for everyone in your party. The kids will enjoy hiking through the rainforests trying to spot the evasive African Green Vervet monkeys, making sandcastles on the black and white sand beaches, or swimming and diving in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. The adults will have their hands full trying to decide between scuba diving, hiking the rocky crags of Mount Liamuiga, and hanging out in the casinos. There will be tough decisions to make about accommodations, too. The island has a wide selection of villa rentals, hotels, resorts, and bed and breakfast properties from which to choose. No matter what your tastes or pocketbook, you’re sure to find just what you’re looking for on St. Kitts.
Why St. Kitts?
|
Combine traditional Caribbean attractions, Old World history, dark, mysterious rainforests, a British air, and you'll end up with St. Kitts. An unpretentious destination with affordable accommodations and certainly without the usual tourist trappings, St. Kitts is considered one of the true treasures of the Caribbean.
Positioned with her sister island Nevis, between Montserrat and St. Eustatius, St. Kitts' is an island of varied terrain from volcanic peaks covered with lush green vegetation (usually hidden by the huge mists that circle it), rolling sugar cane fields, to the arid, undeveloped southeast peninsula with sandy coves. The rainforests are largely unspoiled and untrampled (mostly due to their lack of developed roads.) Hike into nature at Mt. Liamuiga from either Harris or Belmont Estate. A guide is helpful for the trek through the orchid-flecked forest to the lip of the volcanic peak, at about 2,000 feet. The guide helps with exploring inside the crater where portions of the path are navigated by hanging onto vines and trees. You're likely to happen upon the vervet monkeys brought to the island as pets by the French and happily roaming St. Kitts' rainforests and roadsides.
St. Christopher (the name shortened to St. Kitts later) is the first Caribbean Island to be colonized by both the English and French who shared the island from 1625 to 1713. The last quarter of the 18th century was a volatile era of revolutions, slave uprisings and intense colonial rivalry in these islands. The island's proud heritage is evident in a number of locales, including Brimstone Hill-a fortress that was more than 100 years in the making continues to claim its spectacular outlook over the western coast with imposing silence. Known as the "Gibraltar of the West Indies" and a National Park since 1985, Brimstone Hill's 38 acres are a must-see when you visit St. Kitts. The upper levels of the 800-foot hill offer panoramic vistas of forested mountains, cultivated fields, the historic town of Sandy Point and the neighboring islands of Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Barts. The Citadel has remained virtually intact and houses many canons and a small museum and visitor's center. Since 1996 the first of its kind archaeological project is being undertaken which focuses on African slaves in the context of the colonial military as this fortress was born out of the sweat and toil of these African slaves who helped build this massive fortification.
Historic plantation houses on the island provide luxury accommodations in tranquil and lush surroundings. Visit the Romney Manor, nestled 500 feet above sea level on the slopes of a volcano, the estate is set in 9 acres of tropical gardens. Home to the famous Caribelle Batik factory and just 15 minutes from Basseterre, your Caribbean holiday is not complete until you've seen the artisans here craft this colorful fabric. On the way stop and see the Carib petroglyphs carved on huge stones found on the island.
St. Kitts' most famous attraction however, is her crystal blue water, making it seem no accident that Columbus named the isle for the famous swimmer, St. Christopher. Diving on St. Kitts is ideal for both wreck and reef divers who are looking for remote underwater locales to explore. Local dive operators are ecology-minded and continue to protect the reefs. Most sites are within a short boat ride from shore. Some favorites include: Monkey Shoals, Coconut Tree Reef, Nags Head and Sandy Point. Snorkeling, jet skiing, parasailing and windsurfing are also popular pastimes on the island. Beaches are mostly black sand due to the volcanic heritage, but the few white sand beaches are clean, deserted and as white as fine sugar.
An independent nation with Nevis whose primary language is English, St. Kitts prides herself on being tourist friendly and accommodating. Ferry and air service is available to visit neighboring Nevis, only 5 miles away, which makes a nice day trip to explore yet another Caribbean jewel. Still a relatively undiscovered destination spot, St. Kitts appeals to nature lovers, scuba divers and those seeking a quiet place to relax away from the crowds.

St. Kitts is full of exciting distractions. You can take part in the usual Caribbean activities like beachcombing, swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, or all manner of boating, but there are also options for people who want to try something a little different. For hikers, Mount Liamuiga is a challenging hike that culminates at the large crater rim of the volcano. For something a little less strenuous, you can walk through the gorgeous landscape provided by the rainforests. The exotic plants and creatures you’ll see on your trek will make this a truly special memory of your stay on St. Kitts in your villa or other rental accommodation. While you’re hiking, keep an eye out for a glimpse of the African Green Vervet monkeys. These little critters roam freely on St. Kitts and are very appealing.
For something a little more out of the ordinary, travel to Romney Manor on the side of the volcano. While there, visit the Caribelle Batik factory to watch local artists create this very unusual and typically Caribbean fabric. On the way to or from Romney Manor, you can take a side trip to see the huge stone Carib petroglyphs. For a more in depth look at St. Kitts and to hear a bit about its c

Most of the accommodations on the island, including villa rentals and hotels, have restaurants on or near the properties, and there are all sorts of eateries around the island. St. Kitts vgregor@prebon.com We had dinner at Rock Lobster (near the Marriot) twice in 10 days and both times the food was very good. The first time we had a long tough day drinking and swimming at the beach and had a light meal of Tapas and a bottle of Chilean cabernet. That meal was tremendous; melted Manchego and steak on Italian bread, calamari and chorizo, broiled garlic shrimp and conch chowder. The second time we went we had dinner; Caesar salad and fresh linguini with clams and a bottle of Malbec.
The service was typical of the Islands (read slow) but who really cares, we're on vacation? We had time to enjoy the wine and the food came out well spaced and hot. Both our waitress's where attentive and the bill came out around 70$ US.
One thing I'd mention was that the linguini and clams that a nice Italian boy from New Jersey had in mind was a little different than the one that came out; Rock Lobsters had a delicious Creole twist to it...not a bad thing at all.

Culture House, hotel review Visited: February 2012

The web site did not represent the facts of this accommodation at all.
You need a car. Also, it is not suitable for families with small children. There was no hot water. Dining facilities only included signature breakfast, kettle, fridge, air con or airport pickups.
In addition, they offered no credit card facilities. There were several flights of stairs to the bedrooms and many locks to maneuver. If you do not like dogs, you need to deal with at least four guard dogs whenever you enter or exit.
There was no acceptable TV cable package and terrible reception. Service was terrible. The beach nearby not suitable for swimming.
Overall, it was not a great experience. If you only need a bed, this may be suitable but you need a car. I do not recommend this place for ladies on their own.

This place has fallen off so much. I have stayed here twice before. The last time I stayed here, which was just in march 2011, I was quite disappointed.
The room wasn't as good as before. Also, service was worse than my last visits. Quality of the restaurants, including Waterfalls and Fisherman's Wharf, has declined, too. Everything has gone downhill.
I hope the owners take some time to get their act together. This place is the only hotel within walking distance of the city. While not awful, it needs to get back to spec fast!
I still prefer the quiet over the over crowded Marriot, though. It's perfect for a business traveler .

Rawlins Plantation proved to be a fantastic, unspoiled place. It was as a plantation should be with palm trees dotted about - not in straight rows like some others.
The friendliness of the staff was fantastic. On arrival, we were upgraded to a deluxe bungalow at no extra charge. The restaurant and food were fantastic with an award winning chef.
The hotel arranged for us to have a car with a personal driver to take us wherever we wanted to go and when. It was a completely relaxing holiday.

St. Kitts Marriott Beach Resort & Spa, hotel review Visited: July 2010

We just returned from the St. Kitts Marriot Resort.
We give it two stars. The beach was not the best. It was rough, and there was a lot of seaweed. The bathtub was very slippery, I fell and hurt myself. On the second day it rained, and our room began to flood. We had to change rooms at midnight!
The hotel is too big. To reach the beach from the main building, it's a long walk. Half the elevators were not working. The island was nice, and the hotel employees were nice.
The breakfast and lunch restaurants were good. The pool was good, and the setting on the beach was nice. I liked the permanent umbrellas.
In general, the place was nice, but I have been to many that are much better. I will not be returning or recommending it. Also, the country charges an airport exit fee of $17 per person.

I do not understand why it is so difficult to have good service. I am not very picky about service at all, but while planning a relaxing vacation I would prefer not to be treated badly.
It seems as though all of the people who serve you in a restaurant here really dislike their jobs. The waitresses never smile, and act like it has been very difficult to do anything for you. I am truly sorry that I was of an inconvenience to them.
I will choose my next vacation wisely, and try to choose an island that is okay with providing good customer service.

Rock Haven Bed & Breakfast, hotel review Visited: April 2010

We reserved the Rock Haven Inn after reading the reviews on this site - as well as others. Without a doubt, from the time we easily secured the reservation via Judith online and via telephone, we received nothing but quality service!
Our flight was delayed in getting to the island, but Judith and Keith (the very friendly inn owners) still came to the airport to pick us up and bring us to their gorgeous home.
My husband and I traveled with our 22-year-old daughter in celebration of her college graduation. We rented out both rooms and had the place to ourselves. Every day we enjoyed sitting out on the veranda looking at the panoramic views of the Atlantic and the Caribbean seas. The cool breeze there was a welcoming retreat from the hot and humid sun of the downtown area and the beaches. We couldn't think of a more relaxing place to be on the island.
Every morning we looked forward to the best breakfasts we all ever had. Every day we would ask Judith or Keith for a recommendation of things to do and restaurants to eat at, and they were always right on.
We zip-lined and hiked in the rain forest, took an excursion to Brimstone Hill, checked out the downtown area, and found our favorite beach relaxation at Spice Mill Beach.
In addition, the Beach House Restaurant, as well as La Belle Vie, were two of the best dining experiences we have ever had. The rooms were comfortable and quiet. We all slept so well!!
Thank you Judith and Keith! We'll be back someday!

Rock Haven Bed & Breakfast, hotel review Visited: March 2010

We just returned from a lovely weekend get-away at Rock Haven. It was one of the finest B&Bs we have stayed in.
Judith is an excellent hostess--kind, knowledgeable and accommodating. Both she and her husband, Keith, made us feel welcomed and at home the minute we walked in the door. Her local restaurant recommendations were right on target, as well as her suggestions for how to spend our time. From the moment we checked in, to the moment we departed, service was outstanding.
The B&B is located in a quiet, safe neighborhood, just minutes from restaurants, beaches and the downtown area. The property is in superior condition, with well-groomed gardens and vibrant tropical flora. The hillside location offers a breath-taking view of the Atlantic and Caribbean oceans, while lush tropical flowers accentuate the property. We saw several hummingbirds while enjoying our mornings outside on the veranda (and in the hammock).
The B&B's interior is charming, decorated in vibrant colors, striking artwork and furnishings exemplary of the Caribbean. Our bedroom on the main floor was cheerful, spacious and impeccably clean. We opened our room's wooden shutters (screened) each morning to catch the cool ocean breezes and the lovely views, not once having to worry about safety or privacy.
Judith has to be the best cook in the Caribbean! Her breakfasts are legendary-gourmet, home-cooked and delicious! A different dish was served each morning and was excellent, both in presentation and quality. During our stay we indulged in the freshest tropical fruit, homemade bread, bacon, eggs, marinated tomatoes, banana pancakes, and terrific coffee. Judith and Beverly shop locally for produce, selecting only the sweetest and ripest selections.
Rock Haven is such a gem. We highly recommend it and will be coming back faithfully to visit Judith and her wonderful haven as often as possible.

Rock Haven Bed & Breakfast raises the standard for what one should expect when staying at a bed and breakfast. I will miss eating Judith and Beverly's delicious breakfast creations every morning out on the veranda overlooking both the Atlantic and Caribbean Sea accompanied by warm ocean breezes.
The house is beautiful and spacious with stunning north, south, and western views of the island. Judith, her husband, and the staff are very warm and welcoming people and made me feel very much at home in their home.
Rock Haven is conveniently located in the Frigate Bay area. As a single woman traveling alone, it was the best place for me to stay as Judith was so helpful in making sure I was enjoying my trip to St. Kitts.
Judith provides transportation to and from the airport and will help you arrange your island activities. Oh yeah, and they (thanks Camilla!) will do your laundry.
I would recommend Rock Haven to anyone (couples, singles, and families) who plans to visit St. Kitts.

St. Kitts Marriott Beach Resort & Spa, hotel review Visited: November 2009

We just returned from four nights in an all-inclusive package. We thought about the unlimited golf and spa, but decided that food was important. We sure are glad we did because it was very expensive and there weren't that many places to eat nearby.
As far as service, it is important to remember there is a cultural difference and it is called island time. The beach was great, but we heard from locals to be careful because of the rip current. We stayed inside the semi-protected area with no problem, but if I had kids I might worry.
There were vendors selling, but a polite smile and a "no thanks" was all that was needed. We felt very safe walking anywhere - in town, from the golf course, etc.
We tipped, always. There was a 10% service charge on pretty much everything, and it does not go to your server but is pooled and distributed by the hotel.
There is a Duty Free place just a little ways down that had much better prices than the one in the hotel or the cigar bar.
Look at what restaurants are opened which nights for planning. It wasn't the busy time of year, and can imagine it may be hard to get reservations when high season.
We shared cab rides a couple of times to cut costs. The cabs are supposed to have regulated fares which you can find online. The Marriott book advises not tipping them but ignore that.
We brought our laptop and wouldn't have knowing that you can check email and things for $2 for ten minutes, $3 for 15 minutes in the business center. There was no wireless in the room we had.
We had a ground floor room just outside the main building and really enjoyed it. It was quiet and convenient. I can imagine that one farther away may not have been as great.
The tennis courts were 'turf', which were fun. Also, it was lit so you don't waste beach time. We brought racquets and found out that with the $20 per hour comes equipment. The pro was very nice, too.

My wife and I spent five days at Rock Heaven and had a fantastic time. The location was wonderful, the views were breathtaking, and the house was beautiful (typical Caribbean style).
The room was great, and the hosts (Keith and Judith) made us really feel welcome. The daily freshly prepared breakfast from local ingredients was delicious.
We felt like we were at home. It was very relaxed, and we did not want to leave.

We just got back yesterday. We stayed in the timeshare part of the resort in a two-bedroom overlooking the pool and the beach (unit 8301). The resort was very nice. We liked it a lot.
The only thing that would keep me from going back again soon was the food. Since we were in a villa with a full kitchen, we thought about going to the grocery store the first day and loading up on food. However, being at a Marriott resort, we didn't feel pressed to do so. Most Marriotts have a store at the resort where you can get most necessities if needed. St. Kitts did, too. However, it did not have anywhere near the selection of food and snacks we have seen at other Marriott resorts.
The best meal I had was the breakfast buffet. It was quite good but cost about $20 each. A Marriott burger was $15, and skirt steak (cheap cut of meat) at the Royal Grill was $32 each. For two people eating at the resort every day we spent close to a thousand dollars. That included occasional drinks at the bar (just smoothies we don't drink alcohol). If you had wine with your meals you could double that.
We did venture out one night to the Shiggity Shack. That was a good fun place. They had live music and good food. It was still a little on the expensive side, but not as bad as the hotel.
One thing you have to keep in mind is until 2005 St. Kitts was a sugar cane based economy. They do not have a lot of experiance being a service based economy. I will give them "A" for effort. They are still learning.

I brought my family here for a week-long vacation, and we loved it!
The staff was excellent. When I checked in, the bellhop (Bruce) looked at our room assignment and knew it would be too hard for my mother to stay in the room we were given (she has trouble walking). He promptly got us a room in the main building, which was excellent.
At one point during our stay, mom (who has Alzheimer's) got away from us. We contacted security, and they found her very quickly. It was a big relief.
Everything about the hotel was top notch. Any need I had was met immediately. This is a great place!

We spent two glorious weeks at this paradise, and it was remarkable in every way. If you are looking to get away from it all in a casual setting with style,
elegance and every attention to detail, then this place is a must.
We have traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean, and we have never stayed at a place where everything was so "right." The warm welcome, stunning setting, beautiful and spacious room, the friendly/efficient/warm staff, charming house pets, and delicious food. We wish we were there now.
We didn't know much about St Kitts, other than BA recently started service
from London. After learning about Ottley's and St. Kitts, we had high expectations. There was not a moment of disappointment.
Thank you to everyone, particularly to King Arthur, his "Guenevere" and Karen for making us feel so welcome and for creating such a special oasis. Additional thanks to Florie, Marcus and Melba in the restaurant, Dexter the driver, all of the office gals who sorted out our every whim.
We are looking forward to returning in 2010.

The Ottley's Great House was impeccably furnished as were the cottages. Also, the entire grounds were simply beautiful. We could not have asked for a more spectacular setting for our daughter's wedding.
The entire staff at Ottley's was friendly and anxious to please us. We appreciated the excellent service and attention to details. The chef created every meal to perfection, and the meals were presented in superb fashion by a professional wait staff.
The wedding planners, Nancy and Karen, coordinated every last detail of our special events. Their team of professionals not only provided a manicured landscape for the outdoor ceremony, but beautiful floral arrangements, delicious food, and excellent musicians. The dance band's performance was outstanding and appreciated by all our guests. Accolades to the entire team at Ottley's!
We recommend Ottley's Plantation Inn to anyone looking for a perfect location for a destination wedding or for a relaxing vacation.

We stayed at Rock Haven for four nights initially, and found it such a wonderful experience we returned at the end of our trip for another two nights.
Judith and Keith were so welcoming and looked after our every need. The elevated position of Rock Haven provided one with spectacular views over the bay from the beautifully appointed veranda.
Also, Judith's breakfasts were to die for! The accommodation was roomy and very comfortable.
I highly recommend it. Thank you Judith and Keith for sharing your lovely home with us.

Ottley's Plantation Inn, hotel review Visited: March 2009

We just came back from St. Kitts, and did a lot of driving on the island. One of the places we were anticipating to see was the Ottley's Plantation Inn.
While my husband and I took a ride over to check out the plantation one day, we ran into the owner on our way in. She welcomed us and said to enjoy the grounds and the drinks.
However, as we came across a staff sitting at a table, they never got up or offered to assist us. Needless to say, we left. On our way out, we ran into the owner and she was not happy about our experience.
A couple of days later, we returned to have dinner, and we spent a good deal of money. The food was good, but they served very small portions. The head waitress was an angry woman with a cold, and she was not nice to us. As a matter of fact, I suspect she coughed on my food because three days later, I got sick with a cold and I haven't had a cold in years!
When our bill came, I pulled out my little calculator to figure out the EC vs. US money. The waitress walked by and abruptly asked "Is there a problem?" in a loud tone.
For the money we spent, I wouldn't advise anyone to come here.

Frigate Bay Resort, hotel review Visited: March 2009

My wife and I just got back from St. Kitts after a ten-day vacation. We really had no problems with Frigate Bay, other than it was a little frayed around the edges - but clean and well tended.
The pool was large and mostly clean, and the restaurant served a pretty good breakfast and lunch - and a weekly BBQ. The bar was pretty inexpensive as hotel bars go, and drinks were in line with what you pay at the beach bars.
The bottom floor room we stayed in was a little small and next year, for marginally more, we will opt for a second or third floor room.
As far as complaints about slow service, well you're in the Caribbean, get used to it. Slow service is slow all over, and you should probably just learn to slow down. The staff was wonderful and there was always a smile and a "hello". People all over were extraordinarily warm and friendly. The hotel also had security (I'm not sure it was really needed) in the pool-bar area at night which was a nice touch.
I'd suggest renting a car if you're a beach person as the beach next to the hotel was a little dirty. The beach shacks on Frigate Bay served up some great food (Cathy's) and drink (Shiggity Shack) but it was more of a night-time venue.
The great beaches were at the southern tip, and they were clean and mostly quiet. However, it was a 6 or 7 mile drive over a beautiful undeveloped (for now) part of the island.

Rock Haven Bed & Breakfast, hotel review Visited: March 2009

After a lovely week on Nevis, our last night before flying home from St. Kitts was a real treat - thanks to the warmth and hospitality of Judith and Keith, in their beautiful home.
We just wish we could have stayed longer - especially for more breakfasts! Not only was the food excellent, it was beautifully presented and with a stunning view.
