Perhaps I was spoiled by the time I arrived at the Royal Lahaina, having stayed in several different hotels within the prior week plus. To keep apples close to apples, I can say that there were several hotels I stayed at, including on Maui, that accepted the same price (bid online) as the Royal Lahaina did, but had FAR superior offerings. The only advantage the Royal Lahaina had was their beach placement. The Hotel certainly has the best proximity and placement for beach goers and greater likelihood of an excellent,
"full frontal" beach view, in comparison to most other hotels in the area. So if this is important to you versus an offset beach view, then for the price it may work for you.
They charge $9 for parking and no valet parking is available here, which would make more sense here than most other properties given how much further away virtually ALL their parking is, from their hotel, than practically any other hotel I stayed at. And note even on Maui the best properties charge an average of only $15 for valet parking. I saw several incoming guests at an age and physical mobility level, dragging their luggage across the most-often quite substantial distance at the Lahaina... that had them clearly straining to do so. I wonder if the bodybag incident written about by another reviewer here, had to do with an elder customer actually managing to "kill themselves" trying to drag two weeks worth of luggage so far?
The cleanliness of my room was worse than any hotel I remember having ever stayed in.
Their in-room service may as well be eliminated. Two examples for now; the first is that for the same price, I was able to have a full balcony breakfast, delivered with full linens including placement of a table cloth, at the Maui Marriott. And all with impeccable service AND food quality, by every measure.
After being a bit disappointed by comparison, with the Royal Lahaina in-room breakfast offering FOR THE SAME PRICE... I was in for even more education. The next day, I found my breakfast tray still outside my room, 12 hours after placing it where room service asked me to, when I first called as per their instructions, to have it taken away. Naturally I then called the front desk and was assured this would be handled. The next morning it was still there. |

You couldn't ask for a better beach! The hotel is old but well maintained. The rooms are spacious. And the views can't be beat!
Our room was oceanfront, tenth floor in the tower. It was clean and very comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our only meals at the hotel were breakfasts. We ordered off the menu rather than choosing the buffet. The food was great and cheaper than the buffet. The Haleakala Waffles were to die for!
This was our second trip to Maui. We stayed at the Westin last year at more than 2 1/2 times the price. The room was much smaller, the view not near as good, and the beach couldn't compare to the Royal Lahaina.
This was a great value for an oceanfront hotel on Kaanapali Beach. We'd definitely return to the Royal Lahaina!

It's an older hotel, but it has Hawaii written all over it. The oceanfront rooms have a great view to see the whales, and some beautiful sunsets.
The service is a little slow, but who cares, its Maui. Lay back and relax. The people here are very friendly (guests and employees). For the price you pay, you can't beat a stay here. As they say in Hawaii "Mahalo" and "Aloha".
P.S. We will be back in January 2005! |

My wife and I spent our "honeymoon" at the Royal Lahaina in 1983 and have been returning frequently because of the excellent service and facilities.
The rooms are clean, the grounds are well kept, and there are no security problems. Also, the swimming pools are clean, and the employees are always very courteous.
What a wonderful place to spend a vacation. We highly recommend the resort. |

Do not stay here. Visited: July 2003 |

We stayed here for our honeymoon at one of the cottages facing the ocean. On our first night, the sprinklers went off at 2 a.m. right behind our windows, which woke us up. The patio light was shining brightly through the glass door, so we couldn't sleep with it open, because the light would shine directly into the room and there is no switch to turn it off.
The tour desk personnel I found to be quite rude. We booked a tour, and I accidentally threw away the directions on how to get there and the lady gave me the third degree. The wait staff at the Ocean Terrace was not friendly or responsive. The buffet breakfast was okay to say the least. The eggs were runny and the assortment of food was nothing to write home about.
If I could go back in time, knowing what I know now, I would rather spend the night on the beach in a tent. Please do not stay here. |

Do not stay here Visited: April 2003 |

Do not stay here, do yourself a favor and spend a bit more money and stay someplace nice. We were unfortunately here for 9 days and knew from the beginning we were doomed. First day tub overflows from the drain with bad looking water, was eventually fixed but not very quickly. A few hours later water pipes were making a horrible noise and water started leaking from the trap door above the shower. Front desk didn't seem to worried about this and told us we were lucky to be here. Next day police carry a body bag out from a room a few doors down. A couple of hours later they come to clean the room where the dead body was pulled from, the workers quickly came out and spent about 15 minutes loudly gagging and throwing up in the hallway. A few days later they forget to clean our room, when we asked for new towels the front desk blames us for not having our room cleaned. The first thing I heard when I arrived was a young girl in the elevator saying how "ghetto" this hotel was and that they would never stay here again. The last thing I heard before leaving, again in the elevator, was an older gentleman saying what a dump this place was. Again do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else. |

A perfect location with wonderful employees. Visited: July 2002 |

Being a native of Oahu but a long-time mainland resident, I thought the staff at the Royal Lahaina was great. The hotel did show its age, but I think that just added to the character of Hawaii.
The location was the best of all the resorts on Kaanapali beach. I must commend Bill at the Ocean Terrace Lounge. He was just great. And Eddie, who provided entertainment nightly, was also great.
I would recommend this hotel to friends. The Luau was fabulous. I should mention this was my husband's first trip to the islands with me and he was definitely impressed. We have been married for 20 years and he has never had the urge to go "back home" with me. Now he is hooked and we will be back.

We had a decent room on a great beach for a terrific value. Visited: March 2002 |

We stayed five nights in March 2002. The front desk staff was okay, but they showed less "aloha spirit" than other people we met here. Also, the bell hops seemed surly.
We stayed in the main building (twelve story). Our room was large and clean and the decor was appropriate. The lanai was small, but adequate for only two people. There were several maintance issues in the room, however. We brought the most critical issues to the hotel's attention and the maintenance crew arrived promptly (we checked in on a Sunday afternoon no less).
The building was showing its age and deserved more attention or some degree of renovation. After our initial problems, though, we found the room comfortable. We reserved a garden view room, but could see part of the ocean - we were pleased. But, our room did overlook the reception area and driveway. There was traffic noise from private vehicles and buses. I would ask for an ocean front or a south-facing room if I stayed in this building again.
The cottages looked nice from the outside. The Hale building, a three-story structure seemed too close to the nightly luau to me.
The pools and beach were nice. There was a nice walkway to adjacent properties with Whaler's Village a scenic 15-minute walk away. For peak season in Maui, we were pleased with the room rate and felt the hotel, though far from perfect, was a great value for the location.
Our room was less than half the price of the nearby luxury properties. I would stay here again only if the price was right. |

The rooms were okay, but a great beach in paradise. Visited: January 2001 |

We went to the Royal Lahaina for our honeymoon in January of 2001. Our two-week stay here was great.
The rooms were nothing to write home about. But the place was far enough away from the crowded Kanapali Beach resorts to really relax with some peace and quiet, but close enough to walk for some entertainment. The restaurants in the Royal Lahaina resort weren't top-notch and could be passed up without regret, and the hotel bar/restaurant closed early. But, overall, we had an incredible time.
The Royal Lahaina looked as if it was one of the first resorts built in the area, and in places it showed its age, but the fantastic nearby golf courses, snorkeling, Whaler's Village restaurants and 10 minute shuttles to downtown Lahaina over-powered any second glances at the resort's aging decor.
If you are staying in the hotel part, go for a higher floor room facing the ocean. Order a Tropical Itch from the bar to go, and then head to the room and enjoy an amazing sunset each and every night. |

A great place if you learn to embrace "aloha". Visited: December 1969 |

First of all, we stayed here back in Sept, 1999, so the resort, as are we, is now five years older and we know that management and ownership of this resort has changed since our stay. With that said, however, this was for MY very first time in the Hawaiian islands -- we had reserved for the Kahana Beach Resort, but upon arrival, our oceanfront room was not available, so the front desk clerk asked if we wanted to go to a "sister" property (she didn't mention it) or go to an "oceanview" room. To make a long story short about the Kahana Beach Resort, we opted to see the "sister" property --- it couldn't possibly be any worse than this place and we figured if we didn't like it, we would come back here in a pinch
Well, we hit the road back towards Lahaina, found the entrance and were just totally blown away with how expansive and lush the Royal Lahaina grounds were. The guards at the gate were friendly and directed us to check-in. We parked in front of the main entrance and were immediately greeted by the valet (even tho we only had an economy car). We went to check-in and altho she wasn't the most pleasant woman in the world, she wasn't the rudest I've come across either. We told her we were sent down from the Kahana Beach Resort. She called to verify and we were all set. The valet was very helpful, loaded our bags onto a cart and we followed him (after parking the car). We figured we would get slim pickings due to the circumstances, but what we got was an amazing oceanfront cottage room, towards the end of the property, private lanai (kind of), within not more than 30 steps to the beach and 100 yards to the pools. The room was beautiful - the service above par - and the resort gorgeous!
Since we were no longer staying in condo, and had all this stuff from Costco, we weren't sure what to do. There was a mini-fridge but it didn't work, so we called the front desk and had a brand new one within an hour.
For the folks who didn't have a pleasant experience regarding the sprinklers, sounds carry through louvered windows and it's better to sprinkle during the night than during the day. As for the bright light -- you could have turned it off to enjoy the ocean under the moon -- besides, the geckos like the porchlights, so I'm sure you had attracted a bunch by morning's first light!!??
Don't get me wrong, there were little things which bothered us, too. But, you're on vacation, next to one of the most gorgeous beaches (Kahekili), and in the land of Aloha (which runs two ways).
As for the food, we found it to be excellent, but pricey - so we tended to stop at the Safeway in Lahaina and get sandwiches and things. Also, a local pizza shop will deliver to your room. The luau at the Royal Lahaina was a good, introductory one for us. We also dined at Roy's in Kahana (thought it was expensive back then, but now after having visited the islands six times in five years - it's about average in price.... good food regardless) and ate at Bubba Gump's in Lahaina -- great fun for modest prices and fantastic view of the harbor.
Maid service for us was very prompt and accommodating with leaving extra towels when requested. (Here's a tip for all of you, if you leave a couple of extra bucks on the pillows each day for the room service personnel, you'll be amazed at how good your level of service will become.) We did have ants in the bathroom, which we attributed to some of the Costco stuff. We left a note for the maid, she left us a can of Raid and a note saying that if they return, "hit em wit dis!" Problem solved for us; the solution seemed logical but maybe we're just not as "demanding" as some others. We didn't have any plumbing problems, but whatever we did have an issue with was always courteously and efficiently taken care of.
From what I've seen, not only regarding Royal Lahaina, but on many other review sites, is that some folks tend to take themselves WAY too seriously or consider themselves more important than the rest of us. And, then there are just some people who are going to complain, just to complain. Yes, the Royal Lahaina is aging; yes, it needs to have some renovation done; anyone can have an "off" day at work (remember folks, YOU are on vacation, the folks behind those counters still have to WORK); but for the price and the location and the grounds and the sheer beauty of what you have across the beach (great snorkeling within walking distance of your room, great views of both Lana'i and Moloka'i, and a wonderfully long stretch of beach).
A hint: Relax, leave the mainland pretentions and type-A attitudes at home, and enjoy a wonderful time at a relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable resort like the Royal Lahaina. |
