2.0 stars I Don't Recommend It. Visited: June 2003

I had a difficult time relaxing in our room. I didn’t know why, but think that it’s a combination of the smell, or mildew/mineral build-up in the shower, or stains on the carpet, or dirty kitchen utensils. These are all a possibility. However, it wasn’t until later that I discovered what was really making my skin crawl.

The two-mile jaunt across the grounds and adjoining golf course to get to anything resembling a store or restaurant is exhilarating the first time. After that, it’s frustrating; especially when you learn that the free Kaanapali Trolley stops at every location except the Maui El Dorado. By the time we hiked back (uphill) we were exhausted and ready for some rest.

My husband noticed something on the bathroom floor, a one-inch-long cockroach headed right for his foot! It took three smacks just to stop the thing, and he still wasn’t dead, just immobilized. I got on the phone with the front desk and informed them of the issue. They offered to spray the room and I accepted. After I saw the size of the bug I called them back and told them that I wanted another room. They said they had another room for us, but we needed to move immediately because they needed to clean and spray our room for the new guests. We moved two doors down, to a room that had a better bathroom and seemed much cleaner and more comfortable. I wasn’t too happy with the lack of distance between our new and old room, but there weren’t any rooms available in all of Kaanapali Beach, as I had been checking.

Also, the picture of the beach cabana advertised is deceptive. There is very little beach. In fact, there’s about four feet of sand in front of the cabana before you get wet. We nicknamed it, “Beach Mountain” because it was very steep. We couldn’t lie down, rather had to stand up against the sand.

We wish that we could have stayed somewhere else!

4.0 stars Maui Eldorado was spacious and relaxing. Visited: May 2003

I had the pleasure of staying at the Maui Eldorado in Kaanapali. We had a beautifully furnished one-bedroom condo with a distant ocean view.

The resort was across the golf course from the ocean, but they had their own beachfront cabana with towels, lounge chairs, a kitchen with refrigerator for guests to use, bathrooms and a soda machine. They were happy to drive you by golf cart to the beach and back, although it was not a long walk.

The prices for these large condos were reasonable for the area since it was not on the beach. The resort was located just behind Black Rock and the Sheraton, so you have easy access to either end of Kaanapali Beach.

We took a nice long walk along the beach walkway all the way from the Sheraton down to the Hyatt Regency, stopping at the Hula Grill for lunch, and Whalers Village for a little shopping.

Our unit had the bedroom next to the living room (instead of behind) so the lanai covered the whole width of both rooms with lounge chairs and a table and chairs. The unit was carpeted with ceramic in the entry, kitchen and bathroom. It had a large closet and dressing area, extra vanity, two beds in the bedroom (not all units had) and a sofa sleeper in the livingroom.

There were also studio and two-bedroom units available. Their hospitality was outstanding, always making us feel like VIPs. There was an activity desk in the lobby, and a convenience store. There were three pools on the property, but no jacuzzi.

I would not hesitate to stay here again, and if the unit I was put in was not acceptable, I would request a different unit. I have no doubt they would accommodate my request if at all possible. I liked the proximity to all the action of Kaanapali Beach with the quiet relaxation of this resort to come home to.
