The location is excellent for getting an early start on a hike to Papakolea Green Sand Beach, where early birds often have the coastline to themselves. Kalaekilohana is 10 miles from the Punalu'u Black Sand Beach and 11 miles from Ka Lae (the Point, also known as South Point. The inn rests on the southern slopes of Mauna Loa, six miles from Naalehu. Complimentary, island-style gourmet breakfasts are served each morning, including local fruits and Ka'u coffee. The library features a great collection of Hawaiian books on a variety of subjects about Hawaii. Hawaiian language hour is on Tuesdays. A variety of classes in the Hawaiian arts are also available. Guestrooms features poster beds, private bathrooms with large walk in rain showers and warm hardwood floors. Private lanais offer views of the mountains and the ocean.
