2.0 stars New Otani Kaimana Beach offers small rooms for the bargain traveler. Visited: March 2005

This is definitely a “bargain travelers” hotel! This hotel is about as far off the beaten path as you can get. Bring your walking shoes - or a car. The description that the hotel gives is “…only two blocks from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki.” Not sure how they measure a block. It is quite a long walk.

I kind of enjoyed not being in heart of town. Here, you are surrounded by parks, zoo and aquarium. I enjoyed my long daily walks to get meals. It is strange to be in a beach front hotel with no access to the beach. You have to walk out the front of the hotel and around the side to get to the beach.

My main complaints were that the rooms were crazy small and that the doors had a commercial closing mechanism that caused the doors to slam hard every time I entered or left the room. If you are asleep and someone down the hall leaves, you will be awakened!

Also, I was not to fond of the nickel and dime charges - $11 a day for internet access, $12 a day for parking (valet only), $2 a day to use the in room safe (free at most hotels because 98% of all in room theft is committed by hotel staff. Seems strange to charge me to protect me against their own staff). I guess this is kind of normal for this area.

If you just need an old hotel to take a shower at and don’t plan on spending much time there (or ironing cloths for that matter, no ironing board), this is the bargain for you.

2.0 stars No non-smoking rooms Visited: March 2004

Unfortunately, management does not spring this fact on you until after you've arrived, but they do not have any non-smoking rooms. Their attempt to accomodate non-smokers is simply to "air out" the room prior to your arrival--that is to say, simply opening the windows. For those of us with health concens, or who may be sensitive to smoke odors, this is not an option. Also, inspite of the beautiful unobstructed views, the rooms are small, very small. We were upgraded to a suite, which it turns out is the same size as the standard rooms; but, because of the lingering odor of stale cigarette smoke, we chose to seek alternate accomodations, after only a single night of our planned ten night stay. Too bad, really, because this hotel is removed from the constant din of Waikiki Beach, on a quiet stretch of sand that is preferred by locals.

4.0 stars Great buy with good beach location. Visited: October 2002

If you like a quiet, moderately priced hotel right on a nice, gentle sandy beach with good snorkeling and boarding plus a nearby aquarium, park and zoo for the kids, this is ideal. The only drawbacks are small rooms and no swimming pool - but who cares when you're enjoying everything else!

3.0 stars The rooms were small! Visited: August 2001

We chose to stay at this hotel to save money.

The hotel was off the beaten path and away from the city. It was also across from a nice park. The staff was very nice and helpful. In addition, the restaurant was great!

However, the rooms were very small! The beach area was small and crowded. And the hotel was far from the main sections so you either need a car or bring your walking shoes!
