Palm Island - Description

Hotel Description

Palm Island Resort is a private island paradise - winner of this year’s Fodor’s Choice Award (2006)!

At the World Travel Awards it was named ‘The World’s Leading Private Island’. Caribbean Travel & Life ranks it amongst the Caribbean’s ‘most romantic resorts’. Travel & Leisure says it is ‘one of the best places to stay in the world’. Palm Island is a very special place.

It lies on its own 135-acre island in The Grenadines, that chain of exclusive little islands that runs between St. Vincent in the north and Grenada in the south. It is reached via a 45-minute flight from Barbados to neighbouring Union Island, followed by an 8-minute ride by private launch.

Great care has been taken to ensure the resort blends in with these untouched natural surroundings. The five white sand beaches are complemented by just 42 guest rooms that are dwarfed by the coconut palms and charmingly styled with their island-setting in mind. Activities are low-key and generally focused upon the sand and the sea, while dining is always a breeze-cooled beachfront affair, the delicious Euro-Caribbean cuisine taking full advantge of freshly-caught seafood and locally-grown vegetables.

Yet Palm Island is not just a resort. It’s a place where guests slow down, recharge their batteries and gradually rediscover the wonders of nature. Panoramic walking trails show off indigenous iguanas and interesting birdlife. Visiting yachts and traditional beach homes contribute a sense of authentic island life. And boat trips to the world-famous Tobago Cays ensure visitors leave with a great ‘sense of place’.

It was an okay resort - as it used to be. 40 Stars

If you are looking for glitz and five-star food, this is not the place for you. However, if you wish to find a place as the Caribbean used to be, then by all means go to Palm.

The scenery was good, and water is the best that I have found in forty years of island travel. It was spectacular! There was little or no night time entertainment, and that was fine with me. Make your own. Relaxation, book reading, no room TV, water sports were all there.

The rooms were okay and clean, but again if you are seeking the Ritz or the Four Seasons, you will be disappointed. The food was not very good, but if one is not used to five-star dining then it's okay.

A word of caution. The small plane from Barbados cannot handle all the luggage, and it can take several days to ship it over on a plane that is not full. Pack a few days clothing and swim suit in the carry on!

I booked a week-long holiday on Palm Island as a surprise 50th birthday present for my husband. This holiday turned out to be everything we had wished for.

The island was beautiful, and the accommodation was very comfortable. Also, the staff was very helpful and unobtrusive, but always willing to help if asked.

The food was delicious, and the cocktails and champagne flowed very freely. The minibar was always well stocked - nothing was too much trouble.

The scenery was fantastic, and the hammocks were great fun after a few too many Kir Royales.

We would thoroughly recommend this as a real "get away from it all" holiday.

Palm Island boasts a relaxed luxury. 50 Stars

I traveled to Palm Island late January-beginning of February. It was a small resort with wonderful rooms, excellent food, and friendly, accommodating staff.

There was no hassle in finding a beach chair. There were plenty for everyone (or chairs by the pool).

It was just ten minutes by boat to the Tobago Cays for absolutely amazing snorkeling and swimming with sea turtles. I recommend taking the resort's power boat to the cays - they will take you where you want to go. It was relaxed snorkeling in small groups, with a great beach lunch - including grilled lobster.

It was a very laid back vacation - not much to do but swim, snorkel and eat all the incredible meals. Due to the small size of island and resort, we met and got to know just about all the guests.
