Growing up watching Gilligan’s Island, I secretly wanted to get stranded on a tropical island. You can make anything out of bamboo and coconuts, so what more do you need? Today that deserted island lure is still strong. Lucky for me, they exist. Though not quite deserted, these islands are perfectly private and include all one might need for being “stranded” in luxury.
Maybe your disposable income matches those on Forbes top lists. Perhaps you just want to spend a little extra for something special. Either way, there are islands for every bank account.
Necker Island
Located between Tortola and Anegada (and owned by Richard Branson pictured above), this island affords 74 acres of complete privacy. Several couples, families, or large groups will be more than at home here. Opt for renting one of the Love Temple, Bali House or Temple House houses. If you really want to splurge, take over the whole island! The staff to guest ration is high for maximum pampering. A fully stocked bar, Jacuzzi, en-suite bathrooms and private balconies are just a few of the perks here. Kite surfing, tennis (two courts!), kayaking, powerboat trips and other activities are options, too. You can even hire your own submarine! The Necker Nymph, a 3-person aero submarine dips 100 feet below for a rare view of what lies below. Casino nights, spa treatments, and BBQs on the beach are other diversions. A new Great House will be available late this summer.
Musha Cay of Copperfield Bay
Yes, that Copperfield. This 150-acre Bahamian island, owned by the well-known illusionist, boasts five secluded homes. The more than 30 staff (including a world-renown chef) make sure you island experience is anything but primitive. The Manor House features a freeform pool, four bath tubs, a hot tub, water sports gear, speedboat, jet skis, snorkeling equipment, a catamaran and a steam room. The tropical décor throughout each home is accented with treasures Copperfield himself has collected from years of worldwide travel. You won’t need to worry about bumping into anyone on any of the 40 beaches. Only up to 24 can stay on the island at one time – exclusive luxury at its finest. You can leave your own staff at home – amenities include daily maid service, a butler, gardener and a boatman (among others).
Parrot Cay Resort
Powder white sands and azure waters encompass the 55 rooms and private beach houses that make up this enchanting island resort. Located just northeast of Providenciales (Turks and Caicos main island), Parrot Cay is perfect for families or large groups. Extremely secluded and luxurious, guests can enjoy privacy on the idyllic beach or among the lush tropical gardens around the island. Villas feature private sundecks with a heated plunge pool, outdoor shower gardens and en-suite bathrooms. Its easy to let others cater to you for a change with private butler service, maid service, laundry and pressing services. After experiencing a treatment at the Shambala Retreat spa or tasting the delectable cuisine of Lotus restaurant, you may never want to leave. Although extra, Iguana Island excursions, a Tiki Hut Lunch, a variety of snorkel trips, and private boat charters can tip your private island getaway over the top.
Cayo Espanto
Belize is home to this secluded beauty. Just three miles from San Pedro, this resort island has entertained the likes of Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt (to name a few). It’s no wonder. Six beachfront villas include their own infinity plunge pool, private docks, house keeping and complimentary laundry service, and a personal houseman. The seventh villa doesn’t include the plunge pool, but I’m sure you won’t mind. Its an overwater bungalow with its own “natural” plunge pool! Enjoy scuba diving, windsurfing, pedal boats, guided fly-fishing tours and boat charters or snorkel around the worlds second largest barrier reef system. You can always just enjoy some quality alone time. The villas are so well spaced, its likely you won’t see any other guests during your stay.
